I have a bad news for you.
I had some trouble at work, and I might not be able to return home as scheduled.
I was scheduled to be back home in 3 days. However, it may be only after a week from now before I can return home.
For this reason, please do not send the money to me if you require the item urgently. I may not be able to arrange to send it anytime soon. Also, I checked with the post office, but the Sony's speaker is way too big to be fit into the same box. Unfortunately, it cannot be delivered.

Passion or Money First?

Last weekend, the folks [1] from Jakarta Founders Institute organized an interesting open discussion session that discussed whether passion or money should come first for entrepreneurs. It’s an interesting debate, and here aren’t any right or wrong answers.

But as I have noted expressed myself on Twitter, I believe passion should come first for entrepreneurs. My first venture (an educational business) was mainly motivated by money. Admittedly, I didn’t really have passion to educate the younger generation. Financially, the company was ok but I wasn’t too satisfied with my work. I left after five years and the business was eventually sold off. It was a relief.

先週、Jakarta Founders Instituteの同士達[1]は、興味深いオープンディスカッションの場を設け、事業家にとって大切なのは、熱意なのか、それともマネーなのか、を話し合った。これは面白い討論内容で、そこには正しい答えや間違った答えなどない。

だが、私はTwitter上でも私なりの視点を述べたのだが、事業家にとっては熱意が何よりも大切だと私は考える。私の初めての事業（教育関連事業）では、金がメインのモチベーションであった。疑いもなく、私は若者層を教育することにかける熱意など持ってはいなかった。財政的に見て、当企業はまずまずの業績を上げていたが、私は自分自身の仕事に関して満足感を得ていなかった。私は5年後この仕事を辞め、この事業は最終的には売却された。私は安堵の胸をなでおろした。

I didn’t understand what went wrong until I started to take interest in digital media. This blog started out as a hobby before it became serious. We changed focus a couple of times. I didn’t want to settle down on something that I wasn’t taking any real interest in. I kept searching for the sweet spot. Thankfully, I found it. Being able to explore, learn, and tell the stories of tech and startups in Asia is fun and exciting. It became something that I feel very passionate about.

私は、デジタルメディアに興味を抱くまでは、何が悪かったのか全く理解に苦しんだ。このブログは、後に真剣に捉えられるまでは、趣味として始めたものだった。我々は2、3度、焦点を置きかえたりもした。私は、自分自身が真に興味を持っていない事で満足するつもりはなかった。私は自分があるべき場所を捜し求めた。幸運にも、私はその場所を見つけ出すことができた。アジアにおけるスタートアップやテクの話題を探し、学び、そして伝えていけることは、楽しくてわくわくする。これは後に、私が大変熱意を感じるものへと変化していった。

Passion improves the “quality of life” of an entrepreneur. Working 16 hours each day is fine, if it feels good if you’re working on something that you are really passionate about; if you believe that you’re creating real value for people. Passion keeps the entrepreneur going. It also keeps the team going. It is contagious. If the passion is genuine, it will spread across to the team members. Founders will inspire the core team members who will then inspire the new members.

熱意をもってすれば、事業家の「生活の質」をも改善することができる。自分が真に熱意を注ぐことを仕事とし、人々のために真価を作り上げ、それによって自分の気持ちも高まるのであれば、毎日16時間働くのもいいだろう。熱意があれば事業家としていつまでもがんばれるものだ。またチームを動かす力にもなる。熱意は伝染する。熱意が偽りのないものであれば、それはチームメンバーの間で拡散される。創始者達は、中核部分に立つチームメンバーにインスピレーションを与え、後に彼らは、新たなメンバーにインスピレーションを与えることになる。

If passion is missing in the equation, it makes life tough and less colorful. The culture wouldn’t be complete. Your users and customers wouldn’t feel that your product offering is sincere either. Passion isn’t tangible nor measurable but it is an important piece that makes a startup well-oiled and “equipped.”

自身の方程式に熱意が見受けられないのであれば、その人生は苦労に満ち、鮮やかさが欠如したものになる。この特質は満たしても満たしきれないものである。自分のユーザーと顧客は、自分が紹介する商品が心のこもった商品ではないと感じ取るようになる。熱意は実態的なものではなく、また計測可能なものでもない。だがそれは、スタートアップ企業を成功させ、かつ「準備万端の状態」にさせる、貴重な断片なのである。

I’m also a realist. Passion can’t feed you. We all have to somehow find the money to pay our bills. Money is important. But making money without passion is seriously boring. And you probably can’t make money without first being passionate about your product. Your customers wouldn’t trust you. But there are times where money overcomes passion. It is usually at the later stage of the startup cycle though, when passion dies down and the money is there for you to grab, exit, and enjoy life. But as a budding entrepreneur, I believe passion should be the starting point. It’s the fuel that keeps entrepreneurs going.If you haven’t found something that you’re passionate about, keep searching.As the late Steve Jobs said.

Google Maps Loses Market Share Lead in China For First Time

New stats for mobile mapping clients used in China show that Google Maps has, for the first time ever, lost its leading position in the country, losing it by a fraction to Autonavi (NASDAQ:AMAP).

Beijing-based research firm Analysys International found that Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps app now accounts for 25.3 percent of mobile client usage, pipped by Autonavi’s 25.5 percent. In the industry as a whole, the accumulated number of map accounts was at 135 million at the end of 2011, up 34.6 percent on the previous quarter.

中国で使用されるモバイル・マッピング・クライアントに係る新たな統計によると、Google Mapsは、今回初めて、わずかな差ではあるが同国内での首位をAutonavi（NASDAQ：AMAP）に譲ることとなった。

When we last looked at the stats from the same source for 2011 Q1, we saw Google Maps dominant with 46.3 percent market share. But by the end of that year that was nearly halved.

Looking at 2011 Q4 and Q1 side-by-side (see the two pie charts below), we see a great deal of growth for Baidu’s (NASDAQ:BIDU) map app, quadrupling its market share; while Nokia’s Ovi maps lost ground somewhat – though not as badly as its failing phone sales would suggest:

Since the stats come from the same research group, there should be constant methodology applied, and it should give a fair representation of which apps Chinese consumers are turning to for their online mapping needs. Note that the figures don’t include which services are uses within various social media apps, such as LBS apps like Jiepang, which might otherwise make Google and Baidu appear stronger relative to Autonavi.

Google has been struggling in China for some time, and it became markedly worse after its making a stand against web censorship in mainland China. When we last looked at search engine market share figures, they revealed that Google has sunk to third place in China below Sohu’s (NASDAQ:SOHU) Sogou.com.

Blackberry Photo App PicMix Reaches 1 Million Users, Says That’s Faster Than Instagram

We all know that Instagram was bought by Facebook just recently. The photo app craze has reached not only iOS and Android, but apparently Blackberry too. One of the apps trying to catch that crowd, PicMix has reached 1 million users within the last two months, which the founder says puts it on a pace faster than Instagram in its early days.

PicMix, which stands for ‘pictures’ and ‘mixing,’ is all about pictures and photos. You can mix pictures and photos with filters, frames, stamps and ornaments (coming soon) then share it to social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter and BBM. People love to take photos and share it with others, being commented, and liked, especially Indonesian.

We asked the founder about the difference between PicMix and other photography apps:

PicMix comes with some interesting features. For example there is a Mobile Photo contest, advanced frames, premium frames, stamps, and decors. We also keep enhancing our photo filters. So far they have over 7.5 million photos uploaded by more than 1 million members with 32,000 new members signing up every day. 40 percent of the members are coming from Indonesia, with Venezuela in the runner-up position with 10 percent. South Africa is next with nine percent.

They will have to fight it out with BibbyCam as the Instagram for Blackberry. But personally I’ve been playing around and posting some pictures with PicMix for now!

Fashion and Mobile Technology Converge in China, Championed by 360Fashion

Mobile technology is permeating into nearly every facet of society these days. One champion of bringing technology and fashion together in China is former award winning fashion model, Anina Net. Anina is a fixture at many Beijing tech events and is passionate about exploring how mobile technology can be used to bring people closer to fashion.

Last month, Anina’s 360Fashion Network was invited by the China International Clothing and Accessories Fair (CHIC) to create an 800-sqm FASHION AND MOBILE ZONE at the New China International Exhibition Center.

The zone showcases how fashion brands can harness the latest mobile technologies in their brand building, retail space, and advertising campaigns. The zone allowed visitors to experience the power of Augmented Reality, QRCodes, and Near Filed Communication (NFC) as presented on the three different walls of the zone.

このゾーンでは、ブランド、販売店、そして広告キャンペーンを作り上げていく上で、ファッションブランドがいかに最新のモバイルテクノロジーを利用することができるのか、ということを紹介した。訪問者は、このゾーンで、Augmented Reality、QR Code、そしてNear Field Communication（NFC）の威力を、ゾーン内に設けられた3つの異なるウォールにて体験することができた。
