[Simply Business] Startups That I Would Love to See More in Indonesia

Indonesia is unique, we are a nation comprised of thousands of islands, 70% of us still use feature phones and only about 9% percent of us have credit cards. More than 50% of Indonesians don’t live in cities so it makes sense that smartphone users are only 8.7% among 200 million mobile phone users.

Based on those facts alone, it should be obvious that Indonesia is different. We can’t just blatantly apply the same rules of startups like the Silicon Valley players or carbon copy the successful startups out there. Indonesia needs different or more customized startups, better suited for our unique environment.

インドネシアは独特な国家だ。我々は数千もの島々から成り、国民の70％はいまだフィーチャーフォンを利用しており、クレジットカード保持者はわずか9％のみという国家だ。インドネシア人の50％が市街地に住んでいないため、2億人のモバイルフォンユーザーのうちスマートフォンユーザーはわずか8.7％でしかないのも頷ける。

これらの事実だけを見てみると、インドネシアが特殊な国家であることは明白である。我々は、シリコンバレーの企業の例を容易に当てはめてはならないし、またシリコンバレーの成功企業を真似てはならない。インドネシアは、我々の特殊な環境に見合った、独特な、もしくはカスタマイズされたスタートアップを必要としているのだ。

Everybody will have their own opinion on this but here’s my version of what startups I would love to see more in Indonesia:


1. E-Commerce
E-Commerce is definitely an obvious choice and there’s no such thing as too much e-commerce. But I would definitely love to see more niche-based e-commerce. I still find it hard to get my favorite basketball shoes online (at least authentic ones). How about shopping for groceries online? Anybody needs a service to deliver beer? McD and KFC provide online ordering right now so why not make a startup for delivering home-made food for singles? Love the rise of man-only online fashion shops like fashionpria.com and brodofootwear.com.

Find your niche and run with it.

これについては誰もが各々の意見を持つだろうが、以下は私がインドネシアでもっと多く見たいと考えるスタートアップだ：

１．Eコマース
Eコマースは紛れもなく明らかな選択と言え、Eコマースが多すぎるなどという事はない。だが、私はもっとニッチベースのEコマースが登場することを期待している。私の大好きな（少なくとも紛れもなく本物の）バスケ・シューズをオンラインで見つけるのはいまだに困難だ。また食料品類のオンラインでの買い物はどうだろうか？ビールの配達を希望する人は？マクドナルドとケンタッキーフライドチキンはオンライン・オーダーを提供しているし、独身の人達に家庭料理を届けるスタートアップなんかはどうだろう？fashionpria.comやbrodofootwear.comなどの男性専用のオンラインファッションショップが登場したが、これは嬉しい動きだ。

自分のニッチを見つけ出して、成功へと導いてはどうだろう。

3. Empowerment
When I heard that we’re going to have an Indonesian version of kickstarter, I was ecstatic! So ecstatic that I made a project for it (although it got wasted). Wujudkan is the kickstarter for Indonesia, it has a couple of interesting projects in social, games, movie, even a museum project. This sort of startup empowers us to do more, and can help us make our dream come true.

Other empowerments includes helping business take care of the nasty stuffs like IPayMu that helps us manage payment, Tokopedia.com helps us sell stuff online and d-courier and gojek help with delivery.

３．エンパワメント
我国がインドネシア版のkickstarterを始めると耳にした時、私は天にも昇る気分だった。興奮のあまり、そのサービスのためのプロジェクトを作ってしまったほどだ（最終的には没になったのだが）。Wujudkanはインドネシアのkickstarterで、ソーシャル、ゲーム、映画といった興味深いプロジェクトを手掛けており、また博物館プロジェクトも手掛けている。このようなスタートアップは、我々がより多くの活動を行っていけるよう機会を与えてくれ、我々が夢を実現する上での手助けをしてくれる。

その他のエンパワメントには、支払い管理を行ってくれるIPayMuのように企業の面倒な諸作業を代理で行ってくれるサービスや、Tokopedia.comのように我々がオンラインで製品を販売できるよう手助けをしてくれるサービス、またd-courierとgojekのように郵送の手助けをしてくれるサービスがある。

4. Education
I would definitely love to see more startups in the education field. For example kieeds helps parents monitor their kids at school. How about startups for digital textbooks? It sure beats carrying tons of books to school. What about apps for helping students study and connect the students to collaborate more online?

That’s my take on what startups I would love to see more of, what’s your take?

以上が私が今後増えてほしいと考えるスタートアップだ。読者はどのように考えるだろうか？

Social Network + E-commerce Hybrid Site Wishkoo Launches

Early March, several media reported the appearance of a new service called Wishkoo.com, a service which combines social network with e-commerce. With this service, someone can ask their relatives to buy gift collectively for certain friend. After the release of its beta version earlier, today Wishkoo is officially opening its service for public.

At Wishkoo, you can ‘lock’ your desired item so your friends can buy it for you or you can ask your friends to buy a gift as they want. The invitation to buy collectively can be shared via Facebook, Twitter and email.

ソーシャルネットワークとEコマースの融合サイトWishkoo、サービスを開始

3月初旬、メディア数社はWishkoo.comと呼ばれる新たなサービスが出現したことについて報道したが、このサービスはソーシャルネットワークにEコマースを融合させたものだ。ユーザーはこのサービスを利用することで、親戚一同に特定の友人に贈るギフトを共同購入するよう勧めることができる。これまでのベータ版サービス期間を追え、Wishkooは本日、公式に一般ユーザーに向けて本サービスを開始した。

Wishkooでは、ユーザーは希望の商品を「ロック」することができ、友人がその商品をユーザーに送ることができたり、友人の好きな方法でギフトを購入してもらうことができる。共同購入の招待状は、Facebook、Twitter、そしてEメールを通じて共有することができる。

You can be friends with other user, sending message and see what other user wants. Item purchasing can be done through bank transfer (BCA and Mandiri) as well as using Piggy Coins, a facility on Wishkoo in the form of saving from the unused money – from excessive donation, expired wish or an unpaid item.

The concept of Wishkoo, as explained in an email by one of its co-founders, Chaya Kusuma, is based on the observation on Indonesian customer behavior in the social network, such as sharing their desired item on Facebook. Wishkoo also sees that Indonesian people are actively doing digital transaction, both by trading online or in the BB group. The collective concept in Wishkoo is also based on the observation on Indonesian culture which is close to collective concept and the habit of giving gift and getting together to celebrate something.

Wishkooの創始者の1人であるChaya KusumaがEメールで説明してくれたのだが、Wishkooのコンセプトは、例えばFacebook上での好みの商品の共有などといったインドネシアの顧客のソーシャルネットワーク上での傾向を観察し、それに焦点を置いたものとなっている。Wishkooでは、オンライン取引とBBグループ上両方で、インドネシアの人々がデジタル処理を活発的に行っているとも見ている。Wishkooの共同購入のコンセプトには、ギフトの進呈を行ったり、何かを祝うために皆が集まるといった共同購入コンセプトに近いものを持つインドネシアの文化もまた反映されている。

Before the official release, Wishkoo had opened its service beta version and managed to gather more than 11.000 users. The marketing strategy used to introduce its service is by maximizing the social media account of one of its co-founder, Daniel Mananta. Other than Chaya an Daniel, the other co-founder is Ben Subiakto who is known in the startup world through Project Eden and CEO of Fimela.com. Wishkoo also approaches the community to search for selected items.

公式にサービスが開始される前、Wishkooはベータ版のサービスを開始し、1万1000人以上ものユーザーを集めることに成功している。当サービスを拡散するために利用されたマーケティング戦略展開は、当サービスの共同創始者の1人であるDaniel Manantaのソーシャルメディアアカウントを最有効化することだった。ChayaとDaniel以外にもう1人共同創始者のBen Subiaktoがいるが、彼はスタートアップ界ではProject EdenとFimela.comの最高経営責任者として知られている。Wishkooはまた、各コミュニティにもアプローチし、選定商品の検索を行っている。

Besides directly purchasing items, at Wishkoo user is directed to buy collectively the gifts on their friend’s wishlist. To provide the items, Wishkoo cooperates with several merchants such as Damn I Love Indonesia (also owned by Daniel), Global Teleshop, AEDI Shop, Metron and others. Wishkoo also works together with person with unique interest to search for curated items.

Chaya explains that sharing system is implemented with Wishkoo’s merchant partner, it’s different for each merchant depending on the category of product offered by the merchant, with various percentage according to the value of the product.

The focus on user activity, social element and e-commerce are some segments which Indonesian user can choose from. The three segments was, is and will continue to develop. Other than marketing and promotion process to introduce the concept of its service, selecting product certainly becomes one of the main points needs developing.

The product is interesting because as explained by Chaya, Wishkoo is developing a button which will be adapted by other e-commerce service that needs collective wish list feature. It will open the API for Wishkoo button which can be placed on other site. This can help to extend the collection of items which probably wanted by user and not already available on Wishkoo.

インドネシアのユーザーが選択できるカテゴリのいくつかは、ユーザーアクティビティ、ソーシャル要素、そしてEコマースなどだ。これら3つのカテゴリは、過去に作られたものだが、現在もそして今後も継続して改善されていく。当サービスのコンセプトを広めるためのマーケティングとプロモーション戦略以外にも、商品の選択肢が明らかに改善が必要とされる重要な点となっている。

Chayaによって説明されたとおり、Wishkooでは、ウィッシュリスト機能を必要とするその他のEコマースサービスにも導入されるボタンを開発中で、その商品は十分興味深いものとなるだろう。その他のサイトに上に埋め込むことができるWishkooボタンは、APIの可能性を期待できるものになる。これは、ユーザーが希望するような商品がWishkooでまだ取り扱われていない場合などに、より多くの商品を収集する上で役立つだろう。

Even after trying it for some time, I feel not so comfortable with the look and user experience of Wishkoo, including the flow of the menu and element of design, but as I said earlier, it’s always interesting to see the development of a service which maximizes social element, e-commerce and user participation to be active in the service. API can be another interesting thing which implementation is worth waiting for.

Wishkooをしばらくの間使用してみたが、メニュー選択やデザイン要素を含むサイト自体の見た目とユーザー体験の面であまり快適とは感じられないが、私が前述したとおり、ソーシャル要素、Eコマース、そしてユーザー参加を最有効化することで活化されていくサービスが改善されていくのを見るのはいつだって面白いものだ。導入が期待されるAPIは、またもう1つ興味をそそる点である。

OpenTiket To Be Available Soon; Online Ticket Reservation via Mobile Will Be Even More Exciting

Since the emergence of startup community Stasion, the development of digital industry (startup) in this city is getting seen and exciting. Some of the services/startups have been discussed on DailySocial. The startups/services in this city are also very interesting and arguably is able to compete with the startups/services from big cities from business model, technique and UI/UX sides. There will be another service made by the people from Malang that will be released soon.

OpenTiket、間もなくサービス開始 ー モバイル利用のオンラインチケット予約がより楽しく

This time, we acquired information that a service named OpenTiket.com will be released soon. One of the interesting things of OpenTiket is the founders.
