As I last wrote, the Tencent-GREE-mig33 partnership effectively allows a GREE mobile game developer to put its game onto all three platforms, with localization aid (e.g. translation, mentoring) provided. DeNA, on the other hand, single-handedly runs Mobage Japanese, English, and Chinese version and has NetDragon as a local partner in China. Nonetheless, its reach is not as wide as GREE’s but again, this battle is still far from over.

前回書いたように、Tencent、GREE、mig33 間のパートナーシップ締結によって、GREE モバイルゲーム開発者は、開発したゲーム類を、ローカライズ機能（例として、翻訳機能や指導機能）を兼ね備えた上で、それら3つのプラットフォーム上にて展開できるという、非常に効果的なものとなっている。それとは反対に、DeNA は、単体で、Mobage の日本版、英語版、中国版を運営しており、またNetDragon を中国国内の現地パートナーとして確保している。いずれにしても、DeNA の着手範囲は、GREE のそれに及ぶものではない。しかしまた、この競争はまだまだ終焉にはほど遠い。

It’s a Deal! FTuan Snags $60 Million in Funding, Kaixin Partnership

Chinese group buy site FTuan has confirmed, by way of its CEO, Lin Ning, that it has secured US$60 million in third-round funding. With 2,000 employees, Mr Lin states that FTuan has the cash to be sustainable for two or three years. Plus, the company has one more round of financing in the pipeline.

It has also been revealed that FTuan is powering the new Kaixin Tuan deals site that we looked at recently. It’s a partnership that sees FTuan effectively operating the Kaixin Tuan platform (pictured below), as well as being one of the many other group buy sites to coordinate some deals with Kaixin.

The FTuan and Kaixin partnership will soon go further, into – to quote QQ Tech News – a sort of “social e-commerce” platform. Kaixin is a SNS and social gaming platform, so that plan sounds like an interesting fusion of each company’s speciality. No other details are yet available on that.

Back in July of this year, Tencent (HKG:0700) was one of the investors in FTuan’s second round of funding. It was never disclosed just how much the giant web portal injected into the group buy site. Tencent is Groupon’s official joint-venture partner in China, but it has been hedging its bets with its own QQ Tuan, as well as the FTuan investment.

In the cut-throat group buy sector in China, it seems to be a case of tie-up or die-off, as a few key players emerge and build up a kind of gravity that takes people away from smaller deals sites. The last time we looked at statistics relating to offered/sold deals and revenue in this sector, FTuan was a top ten competitor.

TuanBao’s woes are indicative of the group buy sector’s extraordinarily tight margins, and the fact that throwing lots of poorly-paid and desperate sales staff at the situation doesn’t necessarily turn all your offered deals into sold deals. Industry insiders believe that there are as many as 5,000 group buy sites in China – and none of them are actually making any money.

The official and genuine Groupon operations in China, Gaopeng, has had a rough summer as well, with as many as 400 staff being fired as part of an apparent tightening or restructuring. Though the official response was that the company was just firing underperforming workers.
