Here’s what the report said: ”Singapore’s Innovation Efficiency Index ranking is low (37th among high-income countries, 94th in the general rankings); this shows up in its relative weak performance in the Output Sub-Index, where it is ranked 17th overall (Scientific outputs at 17th place and Creative outputs at 33rd).”

Before I go on, let me introduce a caveat: Although Startup Genome was able to capture data from about 500 startups in Singapore through various sources, which does seem substantial, the actual quality of the data remains opaque. We still don’t know how much of the information is gathered from Startup Compass versus public data sources like Crunchbase and Angelist, how complete is the data that has been provided, and how transparent are Asian startups compared to their Silicon Valley peers.

But while we can wait for Startup Genome to refine its data, there’s nothing stopping us from drawing some insight from what we already have. As imperfect as it may be, Startup Genome may be the complete source of publicly available data of its kind at this juncture.

So here’s what the report says about Singapore: The ecosystem is current ranked 17th out of 20 cities; it scores high marks in terms of funding and talent (in 8th place for both), but ranks near the bottom for everything else (between 16th to 20th).

しかしStartup Genomeがデータを精査する間に既に我々が知り得た情報から洞察してみてはどうか。それが不完全なことであるのと同様、現時点ではStartup Genomeが完全に公式なデータソースなのかもしれない。

そしてこれがシンガポールに関するレポートである。エコシステムは現在20都市のうち17位、資金と才能では高いスコアが出ているが（両方とも8位）、その他は全てほぼ最下位である（16位から20位）。

While being a laggard among the best is not such a bad thing, that’s besides the point. What we want to scrutinize is the discrepancy between funding and talent on one end of the scale, and entrepreneurial activity on the other.

Digging a little deeper, we know that Singapore entrepreneurs have a buffet of investment and grant options to go to, especially at the early stage. They are also a competent bunch by Startup Genome’s definition, possessing relevant experiences and expertise, the ability to mitigate risk, and previous startup successes.

Singapore entrepreneurs are also the most hardworking. They clock in an average of 11 hours a day, far exceeding Silicon Valley at 9.95 hours. No ecosystem in the top 20, except for Bangalore, surpassed 10 hours.

Yet their hard work isn’t seeing a proportionate amount of payoff. Singapore ranks last for the Startup Output Index, which measures total entrepreneurship activity, and 19th for the Performance Index, which gauges the performance and performance potential of startups. They’re also last for the Mindset Index, which tracks the founders’ ambition, resilience, and risk appetite.

Taken together, these indices hint at the root problem of Singapore’s stuttering performance: Our cultural deficit.

Don’t take my word for it. Ask Benjamin Joffe, CEO and founder of Plus Eight Star. He said: “Singapore has some of the key infrastructure and policies in place for a startup ecosystem. The money is there for early stage, and global funding can find good companies for later stage investment. What is still lacking? Cultural elements: lower risk aversion, tolerance of failure, better role models and self-promotion skills, and stronger access to key markets.”

総合すれば、これらの指標はシンガポールが飛躍できない根本的な問題、文化的弱点を表している。

Singaporeans are a smart bunch. The country has a top-notch education system producing a proficient workforce who pride themselves in owning everything they do.

But there are too few risk-takers who want to bet on a crazy idea and turn it into a billion-dollar company. And too many scholars who prefer the comforts of a cushy government or MNC job. Even those that bravely step into the fold are not quite as visionary as their Silicon Valley counterparts.

In the end, it all boils down to a numbers game. A society that can nurture the most people with high risk appetites and turn them into successful entrepreneurs wins.

シンガポール人は賢い人々である。シンガポールには最高級の教育システムがあり、有能な人材を輩出していて、彼らは自身の行動に誇りを持っている。

しかし、奇想天外なアイデアに賭けて、それを数十億ドルの会社にしようというような冒険者が少なすぎる。そして、手厚い政府の仕事や多国籍職業の快適さを好む学者が多すぎる。勇気を持って一歩踏み出そうとする者たちは、シリコンバレーの同業者のような洞察力に欠けている。

The Singapore government, recognizing the country’s cultural deficit, is playing this game too.

Recently, I accompanied Minister-of-State Teo Ser Luck as he toured Block 71, which has been designated by the government as a startup hub — a hothouse where entrepreneurs mingle and work together in one building.

The place has become a showpiece of Singapore’s startup ambitions. It’s a garage-like environment that has been used to impress many foreign dignitaries — including one famous Israeli-American journalist who wrote a seminal book about Israel’s startup ecosystem.

M&A is going global – Facebook and Google have been acquiring startups from Asia. Payment innovations and mobile explosions have introduced new and exciting monetization options. Global internet market means successful startups in Taiwan can IPO in Hong Kong, Shanghai or Singapore should they wish to do so. Investors are starting to see the immense potential of funding startups that produce services for worldwide audiences using relatively lower human and technological cost in Taiwan. Reputable international VCs like CyberAgent Ventures have set up shop here.

Lee Kai Fu, Wi Harper and ITRI have set up a new joint fund called Taiwan Mobile Innovation (TMI), at which I’m one of the partners. Yushan Ventures has brought in their Startup Labs program. Angels have started to appear. There are more than 20 incubators, co-working spaces, and off the top of my mind, more than 50 active angels in Taiwan right now. DeNa, Google and Rocket Internet are expanding their teams in Taipei.

Local VCs are reaching out as well – funds are introducing twin programs to give their portfolio more overseas exposure. CyberAgent has shops across Southeast Asia and regularly bring teams to China and Japan. TMI has spaces and mentorship programs in Beijing and San Francisco.What we see here is this amazing transformation and self-learning process by the startup community in Taiwan, be it the entrepreneurs or investors, at a breathtaking pace.

The ecosystem is further enriched by the increasingly thriving startup events such as demo days, hackathons, web conferences and meetups. The recently held Appwork’s demo day saw 15 teams presenting. Yahoo! hackathon attracted 60 participating teams 2 weeks ago. The winner of Taiwan Facebook hackathon actually won the global grand prize. E27 held their first ever Echelon satellite even in Taipei in April. There are nodejs, python and redis meetups every week. Vibrant community, maturing investing environment coupled with an abundance of human capital, especially hardware based engineers, have made Taiwan a very attractive startup hub over the last few years.

But has anyone actually raised?

Yes but not enough.

If we go by the numbers, I think the honor of having closed the largest funding round goes to SNS+, a social gaming platform. They raised more than US$10 million from Wi Harper Group and Matrix Partners. Japanese venture capital firm CyberAgent has also invested in iCook.tw, a local recipe-based social network back in October. 500 startups has invested in Cubie and PicCollage over the last 12 months. TMI seeded seven teams over the last nine months. Yushan Ventures has also seeded 5 teams. EZtable raised over US$1 million from Rose Park Advisors. Pretty sure I’m missing a few other closings, but overall I would characterize the deal flow as slow but healthy.

Historically, Taiwan hasn’t had the market size or resources to compete for everyone’s attention but that hasn’t stopped them from competing and excelling. Great academia, strong IP laws and all the points I mentioned above make Taiwan a very attractive startup hub. Now for the missing piece – a blockbuster hit.

歴史的に見て、台湾は誰もが注目するほどの市場規模も資金も持っていないが、競争することや秀でることを辞めた訳ではない。素晴らしい学術研究機関、強いIP法や上記に挙げた全てが台湾を魅力的なスタートアップハブにしている。ひとつだけ足りないのは－爆発的ヒットだ。

Food journal app Burpple now present in over 3,300 cities, launches Burpple Explore

Singapore’s social food journaling app Burpple launches a new product feature, Burpple Explore, and shares some users stats publicly.

After six months since their public launch, Burpple finally shares with us some of their user statistics. According to their latest newsletter, Burpple is present in 115 countries in over 3,300 cities. The top ten countries for Burpple are Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, US.., Japan, China and Canada. To date, there are over 150,000 photos uploaded to Burpple, which they call food moments.

To put the numbers into comparison, SnapDish, a Japan based mobile app launched few months before Burpple, has just announced earlier this week that they have more than 1.5 million photos uploaded through their app to date. The announcement was made in conjunction with their Digital Garage funding announcement.

New features launched

The last few months saw the Burpple team working on their next new product features. With every release, the team focuses on a theme. And for this one, they have centered on the experience of exploring. The new feature, Burpple Explore is a new way to explore new food through the experiences of friends, family and local experts.

You can now discover what’s good to eat nearby, or in the city you are traveling to, right from your fingertips. If you’re having trouble deciding what to order, Burpple can now determine which restaurant you are in, and you’ll instantly be able to see what others have eaten. Burpple is also unveiling a brand new Place profile. Food moments at a certain place are now showcased in either a grid or feed view.

Keep moving and keep shipping

What’s really interesting with Burpple is that the team has been constantly shipping new features. Launched back in May, the team has been really tight-lipped about their public stats and how they are doing in terms of numbers. In July, the team launched a Chinese version of their app and marched their way to the Chinese market. In August, the team introduced Burpple Instagram Connect, and launched a Japanese version of the app.

Burppleが非常に興味深いのは、チームがコンスタントに新しい機能を登場させることである。5月の始動時にはチームは統計については固く口を閉ざしていて、数字については語ろうとしなかった。7月にはアプリの中国語版を始動し、中国市場に乗り込んだ。8月にはBurpple Instagram Connectを発表し、アプリの日本語版を始動した。

So what lies ahead for the team? Will there be a funding announcement soon? As we noted in our post yesterday when CyberAgent Ventures invested in Vietnam’s Foody.vn, there has been explosive activities in the region in the food vertical in these recent months. While there are rumours that the team is funded, nothing has been confirmed, and as usual, the team is very tight-lipped about their performance, focusing instead on building a beautiful product.

Another suggestion is to hire an Interaction Designer. This person will work with marketing team to obtain customer characteristics. This person will work with visual designers to translate interaction sketch into a prototype. This person will work with developers to make sure the interaction is as designed. This person will do iterative user tests, or work with marketing team to measure customer behaviour while using the prototype.
