2000 convenience stores enable Alipay

Meiyijia, a convenience store chain, has had 2000 stores accept Alipay through smart phones. A payment will be finished by scanning a QR code in each store with Alipay mobile app on Android or iOS devices. Settings allow users to avoid typing in passwords for spending under 200 yuan.

To make sure of security, Alipay was working on top of Meiyijia’s underlying payment system. The deployment of the payment service started from the past September.

コンビニチェーンのMeiyijiaは2000店舗でスマートフォンによるAlipayでの支払いを受け付けている。支払いはAndroidまたはiOS機器のAlipayモバイルアプリでQRコードを各店舗でスキャンすれば完了する。200元以下の支払いはパスワードを入力しなくてもいいように設定できる。

セキュリティ確保のため、AlipayはMeiyijia既存の決済システムを利用する形をとった。決済サービスの配備はこの前の9月から開始している。

We shared our success with Slideshare in a presentation called “How Simplify360 Built World Class Brand Using Slideshare.” This actually became the second most successful piece of content we produced. It was good marketing material for Slideshare and they kept it as ‘Top Presentation of the Day’ for four consecutive days.

私達はSlideshareによる自身の成功を「Simplify360がSlideshareを使って世界クラスのブランドを確立した方法」というプレゼンテーションで共有した。実際これは私達が作成したコンテンツで2番目のヒットとなった。Slideshareにとって素晴らしいマーケティング材料となり、4日間連続で「今日のトッププレゼンテーション」に輝いた。

Building on success

So what’s next? For us, it could be building a new tower as powerful as the Slideshare channel. This could be Scribd, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter. It could be Pinterest too. I don’t want to disclose the channel just yet.

We have decided on one and are working on it. We will not, however, stop building our Slideshare channel. We’d like to have two powerful towers. We do have good SEO too, and are working on official PR as well. All these constitute a business strategy.

6 Reasons Video-Sharing Apps Were the Biggest Startup Letdown of 2012

This time last year I was raving, I was gushing, all over startups making video-sharing apps. I named one such venture as one of my standout Chinese startups of 2011, and compiled a list of 10 Chinese-made social video apps. Over in the US, there are ones such as SocialCam and Viddy.

But I was wrong.

On neither Twitter [1] nor Weibo have I seen anyone post a short video clip of their own among the 1,500+ people that I collectively follow. I made three videos myself. But that’s far fewer than the hundreds of photos that I shared socially.

去年のこの時期、私はビデオ共有アプリを作っているスタートアップについて熱弁をふるい、夢中でしゃべっていた。このようなベンチャーを2011年最も顕著な中国のスタートアップとして挙げ、中国発ソーシャルビデオアプリ10のリストを作成した。

しかし、私は間違っていた。

Twitter[1]とWeiboで合計1,500以上フォローしているが、誰も自分のショートビデオクリップを投稿していない。自分は3つビデオを作成した。しかし、ソーシャルで共有した数百枚の写真の数とは比べ物にならない。

So what went wrong exactly? Before looking at six reasons behind this social video anticlimax – both in China and overseas – it’s worth pointing out that the “standout” video app that I highlighted last year has pivoted away from doing this. Yes, iShehui app, despite over $1.5 million in backing from CyberAgent Ventures in the very early stages, gave up on this sector a few months ago and is now a cloud file backup service. It’s just as dire in the US, with BusinessInsider (showing remarkable restarint in not using all-CAPS for the headline) recently also holding up its hands to say, “Nope, that whole ‘Instagram of video’ thing was bullshit.”

それでは一体何が悪かったのか？期待はずれのソーシャルビデオの6つの理由の前に、中国とそれ以外の国で私が昨年注目した「傑出した」ビデオアプリが的外れとなったのかを説明する価値があるだろう。そう、iShehuiアプリはアーリーステージでCyberAgentから150万ドルの後援を得たにも関わらず、数ヶ月前にこの部門を諦め、今はクラウドファイルバックアップサービスを提供している。最近お手上げ状態で「いやぁ、ビデオ版Instagramなんて全てが戯言だった。」と言っているアメリカのBusinessInsider(ヘッドラインのため全て大文字は使えないというすごい制限）と同じくらい悲惨な状況だ。

Indeed, Viddy was supposedly valued at $370 million from its series B funding, but now limps along with a mere 660,000 users. I think my local noodle shop has fed more people than that.

Here are the things holding back these video apps, both in China and in general:

実際、ViddyはシリーズBファンドで3億7千万ドルの価値があるとされていたが、現在はユーザー数がたったの66万人しかいない。地元のヌードルショップだってもっと人が来ていると思う。

中国、そして一般的にビデオアプリが前進しない理由はこうだ：

Time constraint

When a friend shares a photo, your eyes and brain can immediately decide how much time and energy to invest in that image. Perhaps glance over it for barely a second, or pore over it and opt to ‘like’ it and leave a comment. Video content, however, inherently takes more time, and is much more likely to be a let-down. From one preview image in the video player window (usually a blurry or badly-lit one) you have to decide whether it’s worth 10 seconds – or three minutes or whatever – of your time and attention.

時間の束縛

友達が写真を共有したら、目と脳がすぐにその画像に費やす時間とエネルギーを判断することができる。おそらく1秒ほどチラッと見るだけだったり、じっくり眺めて「いいね」を押したりコメントを書いたりするだろう。しかし、ビデオコンテンツは本質的に時間がかかるし、期待はずれである確率が高い。ビデオプレイヤーウィンドーのプレビュー画像（大抵ぼやけていたり不明瞭）から、それを見るのに10秒、または3分など、時間をかける価値があるか、見る価値があるか決めなければならない。

Usually it’s not. Social videos are 98 percent let-downs, so it’s little wonder that few people are either making them or watching them. To quote one of this year’s top viral video stars, “Ain’t nobody got time fo dat.”

Also, if you look at the Socialcam homepage, you might get the feeling that most of the videos are not only ones you don’t have the inclination/time to watch, but also enough to make you wish for some sort of zombie apocalypse that only affects stupid people – perhaps zombies that are on a diet and can only eat tiny brains.

大抵は見るほどの価値はない。ソーシャルビデオの98%は期待はずれなので、作る人や見る人がいるのが不思議な位だ。今年最もバイラル効果のあったビデオのひとつは、「誰もそんなの見たくない」であった。

またSocialcamのホームページを見れば、ほとんどのビデオは見る時間も興味もないものだが、ゾンビの黙示録でダイエット中のゾンビが小さな脳味噌しか食べられないといった、馬鹿馬鹿しいものなら見たいと思わせる。

Photo apps are more fun and rewarding

As I touched upon in the first point, photos give a much higher emotional return-on-investment, so to speak, and never leave people feeling robbed of their time. Even a GIF that takes a while to load, but then turns out to be lame, can be a disappointment. But a dull photo is, thankfully, easy to pass over.

Little traction

With social videos so likely to rub people up the wrong way, there’s not much viral traction. And when a smartphone-made video does actually go viral, you’ll likely see it on YouTube. For Chinese web users, the same applies to Youku, the nation’s biggest YouTube-esque site.

最初のポイントでふれたように、写真の方が感情的な見返りが期待できる。しかも、人の時間を奪ったりはしない。GIFのローディングには時間がかかるし、つまらなかったり期待はずれだったりする。ぼやけた写真はありがたいことに処理しやすい。

注目力のなさ

ソーシャルビデオはガッカリさせられることが多く、見たいとも思わせない。スマートフォンで作成されたバイラル効果があるビデオはYouTubeで目にするだろう。中国のウェブユーザーも同様にYouTube風のサイトYoukuを見ている。

Buggy apps

When I first used the Chinese-made iSheHui app, it was very crashy, but it slowly got better. The same for Weiku and YiXia. And Weipai. Even today, I noticed an update to YiXia that took it up to v3.0; but when I go try to upload a Path-like background image for my profile page, it doesn’t even work. Weipai, when I tried it at first, wouldn’t even upload a damn video, which was its sole purpose. All the startup video apps felt rushed, as if running headlong to some imaginary finishing line that had the words “Congratulations, you’re the ‘Instagram of video’ and the founder is going to be a billionaire” on it.

バグの多いアプリ

中国版iSheHuiアプリを試した時はクラッシュが多く、時間はかかったが改善されていった。WeikuやYiXiaも同様である。Weipaiもそうだ。いまだにYiXiaがv3.0までアップデートされているのに気づいたが、Pathのような背景画像を自分のプロフィールページ用にアップロードしようとすると、できない。Weipaiを最初に試した時、くだらないビデオのアップロードすらできなかった、それ以外に何の用途があるというのか。スタートアップビデオアプリは全て見切り発車であり、「おめでとう、"ビデオ版Instagram"になれましたね、設立者は億万長者です。」という締めくくりの言葉でも妄想していたかのようだ。

But, in reality, people just deleted your rushed, flakey, half-assed app and never gave it a second thought.

No video embeds

On both Twitter and Sina Weibo, there’s no support for smaller video services to be embedded in the apps or webpages, which severely limited the social aspect of these supposedly very social services. And so viewing a Socialcam or Weiku video that’s shared by someone on Twitter or Weibo requires an extra click through to another site.

しかし現実的には、人々はこの不完全で著しく中途半端なアプリを消去し、二度と使おうと思わなかった。

ビデオ埋め込みができない

TwitterもSina Weiboもアプリやウェブページに埋め込む小さなビデオサービスサポートをしておらず、所謂ソーシャルサービスであるにもかかわらずソーシャル面で厳しい制約をしている。SocialcamやWeikuのビデオをTwitterやWeiboで共有するには、クリックして他のサイトに入らなければならない。

Eating up 3G

In China in particular, 3G data plans are miserly, and you won’t get far on a 300MB per month deal with even basic stuff like emailing and browsing. Though sites like iShehui initially promises very clever data compression to save you your 3G data plan, not enough people were convinced.

特に中国では3Gデータプランは悲惨なもので、Eメールやブラウジングなど基本的なことを含めて毎月300MBしか使えない。iShehuiのようなサイトはまず優れたデータ圧縮方法により3Gデータプランには影響が少ないと約束したが、これに納得した人は少なかった。

For our works, A has outside walls so it cannot be seen from outside.

Exceptionally, R is an open house for single resident. Second floor which can be seen from outside is used as private space with less apertural area. Depending on the landform, glass-walls are used for first floor where it can not be seen from outside.

Also, first floor of this house is used for rather public purpose.

In Japan, we don't like our children to stay in their room that much, and usually they are given their own room at around the age of 10. Children of the residents living in our houses have not reached that age yet, so we haven't had any complaints so far.

Since the old days, we lived ourlives creating privacy by sliding screens, so I guess in modern time glasses and curtains replace slinding screens.
As far as the houses I designed are concerned, there has been no accidents.
While the children are little, we put nets etc to assure safety.
Japanese people are oversensitive when it comes to safety in public space, but individual judgement counts for personal spaces.
This is a renovated house and has stairs, other than a ladder, there is an entrace. There is no proble for ordinary use.
