米国のブッシュ元大統領の姪でありWFP 国連世界食糧計画の名誉スポークスパーソンとして活動していたローレン・ブッシュ氏。ファッション誌VOGUEの表紙を飾るなど、ファッション・モデルとしても活躍していた同氏は、慈善家として、モデルとして、妻として―いま、世界中から最も注目を集めている一人。

Crowd-funding in Japan – Save the earth with Fashion! FEED min-photo book project
Lauren Bush is a niece of former president Bush, also known as an honorable spokesperson of WFP (World Food Program). She was also a fashion model and had appeared on the cover of VOGUE. Now, she is the one of the most remarkable people in the world as a philanthropist, a model, and a wife.

そんなローレン・ブッシュ氏によって2006年にNYで立ち上げられたブランドが「FEED」だ。「バッグを買うことで、世界中のお腹をすかせた子ども達に給食を届ける」というコンセプトをもとに、これまでに6800万食以上の給食を子ども達に届けてきた。FEEDにはバッグやTシャツをはじめとした様々なアイテムが揃っており、ファッションを楽しみながら社会貢献をすることが可能となる。

“FEED” is a brand that Lauren Bush established in 2006 in NY. Based on her concept, “deliver meal to the starved children in the world by buying bags”, she has delivered more than 68 million meals to the children so far. FEED’s collection varies from bags andT shirts to various products and you can contribute to the society while you enjoy fashion.

2012年にローレン・ブッシュ氏が初来日し、バイヤー向け写真展が開催された。この写真展の内容とローレン・ブッシュ氏初来日の様子をミニフォトブックとして、より多くの人々へ伝えるためのプロジェクトがCAMPFIREに掲載された。

だが、残念ながらこのプロジェクトの資金調達は達成しなかった。このことから考えられることはなんだろうか。仮説だが、以下のような理由が挙げられるのではないだろうか。

In 2012, Lauren Bush visited in Japan for the first time and photo exhibition was held for buyers. CAMPFIRE listed the project to create mini-photo book about the photo exhibition and her first visit in Japan to tell more people about her work.

Unfortunately, the fund for this project did not reach to the target. What can we learn from this? It is only hypothesis, but followings can be considered as reasons behind.

・プラットフォーム全体のコンセプトと、プロジェクトのテーマが合わなかった
・有用なプロジェクトであるという共感が得られなかった
・インセンティブ設計がうまくいかなかった

達成した事例からなぜ達成したのかを学ぶことは重要だが、達成しなかったプロジェクトからなぜ達成できなかったことも重要だ。新たな資金調達のエコシステムであるクラウドファンディングは、まだまだ成長の余地が残されている。

• Concept of overall platform and theme of the project did not match.
• Little empathy about the project’s effectiveness
• Incentive design did not perform well
It is equally important to learn from unsuccessful project as to learn from successful project. Crowd-funding, a new finance eco-system, has more room for growth.

「くるくる鍋」は、鍋の側面に斜めの溝を付けただけのシンプルな鍋だ。加熱時に水温が上がると水が溝に沿って上昇し、鍋の中にかなり強い洗濯機のような渦が発生する。鍋の中身がくるくる回ったら面白いのではないか？という思いつきで試作品をYoutubeに投稿したところ、再生回数74万回を越える思った以上の反響があり製品化を試みた。

“kuru-kuru pot” is a simple pot that has angled grooves on the side of the pot. When the water temperature rises, water comes up along with the grooves and the pot creates strong swirl like washing machine. It could be fun if the ingredients circle around in the pot. The test pot was posted on Youtube. It’s got more feedback than expected and was reviewed more than 740,000 times. Commercialization of the product was attempted.

鍋の特徴には以下の通り。

・混ぜる手間が省ける 。
・渦の力で泡が中心に集まるので「吹きこぼれ」にくくなる。
・アクも中心に集まるのでアク取りが簡単。
・視覚的に効果が分かりやすく面白い。

The features of the pot are following:
• No need to stir.
• Less chance of boiling over since the bubbles gather in center due to the swirling power.
• Easy to get rid of scum.
• Fun to watch its visual effect.

問題は、鍋の実用性が定かではないことだ。何の役に立つのか？どんな料理に使えるのか？料理をつくったことのない30～40代の男性のアイディアだから仕方ないかもしれない。プロジェクトで集めた費用は、くるくる鍋の初期ロット最小1,000個以上の製作費用に充てられる予定だった。実際の試作、量産を行うのは新潟県の「東陽理化学研究所」開発部。スティーブ・ジョブズがi-Padの制作依頼にわざわざ来日訪問したほど技術力のある会社だという。

The problem was the unclear practicality of the pot. Is it useful? What kind of food do I cook with this pot? It cannot be blamed because this is an idea of 30-40 years old man who never cooked. The funds collected through the project were supposed to be used for its initial production cost for minimum of 1000 pots. Product Development department of “Toyo Rikagaku Kenkyusho Co., Ltd” in Niigata was selected to create the test products and go on the production. This company has reputable technology ability. Even Steve Jobs visited to request i-Pad production.

面白い！とYoutubeでは話題になったものの、Campfireでは311,000円しか集まらずプロジェクトは成立することなく終わった。クラウドファンディングを利用することで、そもそも鍋の実用に関するアイディアが集まれば良かったのだが…。残念ながらクラウドファンディングの利用者に主婦は少ないようだ。

Although it became a topic on Youtube, the project was unsuccessful because there was only JPY311,000 collected in Campfire. It could turn out better if more practical ideas were gathered through crowd-funding. Unfortunately, it seems that only a few housewives are using crowd-funding.

12月11日にバッグが１つ届きましたが、後から注文した赤いバッグが先に届きました。
