During my eight days at Sundance I consumed a whopping total of 22 movies, which is just shy of 3 films a day. As is the case with attending any festival, I regret missing some of the larger titles that received ample amounts of buzz and acclaim. Chief among those missing from my "watch list" are "Boyhood", "The Raid 2: Bernadal", "Calvary" and "The Voices", all of which Simon Abrams covered here.

No matter; I caught enough movies that I can confidently claim satisfaction. Those despondently decrying Sundance's slate of films this year should look no further than this list, Simon Abrams' list and this piece by Eric Kohn.

There's a telling moment in Gore Verbinski's "The Lone Ranger" where a boy is playing with an electric train set and deliberately sends a train crashing off the table to the floor. He does this for no other reason than for the fun of it and because he can. When reprimanded by Tom Wilkinson's character, the boy indifferently says, "It's just a toy." It's an act that not only proxies Verbinski (who bookends "The Lone Ranger" with two train crashes of his own because he can, for the fun of it), but captures the child-like destructive fantasies now playing themselves out in the current wave of blockbuster filmmaking.

The most difficult routes are in Corcovado. Equipment is expensive but readily available in the many storesRamp of Rio and in many clubs rent equipment too. The best period for climbing is from April to October when the temperature is more pleasant and the weather is stable. In the summer from December to March, people still climb, but less frequently because of the rain, lightning storms, and very hot temperatures common in this period of the year.

Our guide in the rock climbing was Pedro Bugim. He explains that in general it is very cheap to take part in the excursions, be they rock climbing, hiking or trekking, around 17USD.

There are also many trails in the parks of Rio for hiking and trekking. Tijuca National Park, inside Tijuca Forest, for example, has mountainous terrain and high peaks. Hikers can climb the 1,012 feet to the summit. One of the best hikes is up the back of the Sugar Loaf. The summit reaches 1,302 feet high. Mountain biking on trails is very popular in the parks of Rio. There are many trails for the addicts to this sport. Vista Chinesa, in Tijuca forest, is a great spo with hard downhill trails. There are also easier trails in Parque da Cidade, in Gávea neighborhood.
