Popinjay dreams of making poverty a thing of the past for Pakistani women

When it comes to earning money, women in Pakistan have historically received the short end of the stick. Because of the country’s conservative culture, girls typically find it hard to get an education or progress beyond low-paying jobs. In fact, the Global Gender Gap report published by the World Economic Forum just last year saw the Muslim nation rank a dismal 141 out of 142 countries in terms of economic participation and opportunity for women.

“In addition, I had always carried within me a deep love for the beautiful craft techniques I saw in Pakistan, where I grew up, as well as in my travels around the world – India, Bhutan, Ethiopia, and Sri Lanka,” she recounts. “I felt that this talent was stunted due to a lack of opportunities and connections to larger markets.”

So in 2011 – when America was still recovering from the effects of a terrible recession – Saba decided to return to her homeland and try to make a difference. She unwittingly stumbled upon her life’s mission in the process.

“I started a pilot in Pakistan to provide young women access to basic education and livelihoods. As it started gaining traction in the local community, I realized that it lit my fire like nothing had before,” she says. “Quitting my job after that was a no-brainer.”

The pilot program – which evolved into a full-fledged non-profit organization called BLISS – involved after-school classes in which girls learnt embroidery and needlework. Their embroidered fabric would then be sent to local producers to be finished into high-quality handbags, which were sold in boutiques. The proceeds would be used to fund the girls’ education, as well as recruit other students.

Their handiwork soon became extremely popular with customers not just locally, but from all over the world. In an article on Medium, Saba recalls an encouraging note from a customer from Canada:

I’ve never loved a thing as much as I love my BLISS bag. You make bags that change the world! People ask about it because it is so unusual, so lovely; it is embroidered art. When I tell them the story of families lifted economically, the bag becomes so much more beautiful.

In addition, the handbags were featured in several national and international media platforms, and even in fashion shows. On the surface, it seemed like a success, but there was a deeper issue that had Saba worrying behind closed doors – how the team was going to go about “scaling up our model after the initial proof of concept.” At that time, the BLISS team had a grand total of two people, with just 40 artisan women under its wings.

Here was the problem: Saba’s goal of bringing prosperity to artisan women was highly dependent upon the organization being able to to sell more products made by them. And to sell more products, the enterprise was going to have to make a name for itself in the fashion industry, which we all know is fiercely competitive, to say the least.

“The first step to scaling was to accept that we weren’t just a non-profit dipping our toes into the world of fashion out of necessity. We were in the business of fashion. Not in the business of poverty or education, except indirectly,” Saba writes.

“We needed to be a fashion label focused on sales, not a non-profit focused solely on social impact.”

Getting down to business

A massive overhaul of both business model and mindsets was what came next as BLISS was re-branded into the for-profit Popinjay, and came online in late 2013. The name is a Middle English word that means parrot.

“We chose a parrot because it is an animal that is associated with a voice,” Saba explains. “Our parrot stands for the voice of good fashion, the voice of the artisan women whose skills and stories we spread, and the voice of the consumer who wants to create positive impact with their purchase.”

BLISSが営利追求型のPopinjayにリブランドし、2013年にオンラインビシネスに参入する中で、ビジネスモデルと理念の大掛かりな徹底的見直しが次なる課題であった。新しい名称は、中期英語でオウムを意味している。

The Popinjay brand would be defined by two things: luxe design and global impact. But before the latter could be accomplished, the former had to be established in the marketplace. To do this meant Saba had to focus on fundraising, sales, and hiring talent – advice that she got from an advisory board member and the founder of Indigenous Designs, Scott Leonard.

While this was not what she had in mind when first founding the organization, Saba knew that Leonard was right, and she began the process of developing a greater business sense.

“My breakthrough came when I started pitching Popinjay to investors who had a deep connection to Pakistan, and a great appreciation for the soul of our brand,” she tells Tech in Asia. “We secured a seed round of funding through a syndicate of angel investors within a month of starting conversations with them.”

It’s an incredibly competitive landscape for Notey though, especially since it isn’t positioning itself as a publication but a curation tool. An analogous service is Flipboard, which also starts off by getting users to select several topics to follow. Yes, Notey is different in that it trawls content from 500,000 blogs, but the outcome doesn’t seem too different at first glance. Flipboard works with my Facebook and Twitter feeds to customize the content I want to see, and that works just fine for me. Sure, Notey has a pretty sweet user experience and a beautiful interface, but is there enough demand for another aggregator?

“What differentiates us from RSS readers and blog directories is that we’re focused on the content. We’ve structured the site based on topics, rather than creating a list of bloggers. On top of that, we also curate. A friend described Notey as ‘80 percent tech; 20 percent Vogue’ and we entirely agree,” says Tan. “We think having that human touch makes all the difference.”

Let’s hope that’s really the case. Notey’s arguably strongest feature is its search tool. I was able to zoom in on personalities like SpaceX founder Elon Musk or NBA superstar Kobe Bryant very quickly, and the site brought me a list of relevant articles about them. RSS reader Feedly does have search capability, but it needs more work.

Tan tells Tech in Asia that Notey, available on the web and as an iOS app, is doing a better job than existing tools in helping users find content. While Flipboard’s search engine is pretty useful, Tan says that it focuses on the top publications while Notey zooms in on the long tail. “You’ll typically find Flipboard’s sources on say page one of Google. Notey however highlights more of the independents and the best of those sources featured on page two to ten of Google.” She also claims that Notey covers more topics, 500,000 compared to Flipboard’s 34,000.

On Facebook, Tan says that it tends to serve up clickbait to users – and I have to agree. While the social network proclaimed that it’s trying to cut down on such content, the fact remains that people tend to have a low bar for credibility and would share stuff that don’t stand up to scrutiny. That’s a source of irritation for me. Notey, on the other hand, employs human curation to ensure quality. We’ll see if it can deliver.

In the startup world, building an innovative tool isn’t enough. A product needs to find traction among a niche group of users and grow from there. Tan did not disclose user figures, so it’s difficult to ascertain how much the site has grown. But according to SimilarWeb, the site’s traffic jumped from 7,000 visits in December 2015 to 250,000 in January.

If that’s even half true, Notey is indeed showing promise, especially since its likely revenue model involves advertising – and that means attracting eyeballs.

Kahuna has a way to make app notification links super personalized

Suppose you see a push notification on your phone about tickets being available for the upcoming basketball game between the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

If you’re Adam Marchick, CEO of mobile marketing platform Kahuna, you’re a big Warriors fan. Now imagine that, when he clicks on the link in the notification, it takes him right to a Warriors-branded shopping cart inside his installed tickets app, with the four tickets he usually gets already populated on the screen.

But that kind of deep linking showed a specific screen that everyone clicking that link would see.

Yozio recently released a SDK so that a link for an app install can open the app to a specific screen once it’s downloaded. That screen, for instance, might show preloaded credits that came through that referral link.

Mobile app tracker AppsFlyer has developed the ability for, say, a link in a mobile hotel ad to direct the user to the appropriate travel app download, and then, when the app is opened, show the page inside the app for that advertised hotel.

“What we’re doing that no one else is doing,” Marchick said, “is utilizing deep linking to drive [sales] conversion” by taking users to personalized locations within an app in one hop.

Kahuna’s previous ability to send a personalized message inside an app, he said, raised sales by 40 percent. Now, based on testing in the just-completed beta phase of Dynamic Deep Linking, Marchick said this new ability to send a user to a personalized page is causing the increase in sales conversion to hit 66 percent.

Mullenweg also chimed in on other productive hacks. He’s a big fan of the alternative keyboard layout known as “Dvorak.” Except for few a letters, such as B and M, everything else is re-arranged to place commonly used keys in better positions, for greater typing efficiency.

Today, it’s PayPal that’s leading the pack, with 13 percent of retailers supporting the platform. What will PayPal do to hold off Apple this year? Well, first of all, it will need to develop a better way of letting people pay in brick-and-mortar stores.

During Apple’s earnings call last week, CEO Tim Cook said his company has been hearing from point-of-sale system suppliers that merchants have been expressing strong interest in systems that support Apple Pay.

“More merchants have signed up, and adoption is strong,” Cook said.
