Ant Financial Services Group

The spinoff was first called Small and Micro Financial Services Company and then this October renamed Ant Financial Services Group.

Apart from Alipay, the group also operates a small loans business, established in 2010 and now called “Micro Online Loans”, that has been supplies credit to retailers on Taobao. Loans are granted based on the retailers’ records, such as sales and customer ratings, which Alibaba is able to track.

Commenting on why they chose not to partner with Xiaomi, Wang Xionghui, ORVIBO CEO, gave three reasons in an interview with Digi Channel of QQ.com: (1) Xiaomi requires a partner to make one or two best-selling products (no less than one million shipments in a year) every year and sell them at cost, (2) a partner must sell a considerable stake to Xiaomi, and (3) only the Xiaomi logo, and not the partner’s, can be shown on products chosen by Xiaomi.

Xiaomiの提携しなかった理由について、ORVIBOのCEO、 Xionghui氏は、QQ.comのDigi Channelのインタビューの中で、3つの理由を挙げた。（1）XIaomiは、提携企業に毎年1つか2つの（年間販売数100万もの）商品を製作し、それをXiaomiに原価販売するよう求めている。（2）提携企業は、相当量の製品をXiaomiに販売しなければならない。（3）Xiaomiが選んだ商品には、提携企業のロゴは使用せず、Xiaomiのロゴのみとする。

It seems however that the third issue is not always true, as the logos of some companies, such as iHealth and Ant camera, are on their items sold on the Xiaomi store.

The first two issues are key aspects of Xiaomi’s strategy. But for a third party like ORVIBO, the concerns are (1) even if sales are in the millions, the third party can’t make a profit since products are sold at cost, (2) Xiaomi will gain users through gadget sales and have them stay on Xiaomi’s software platform, but other products by the third party cannot retain this user base, and (3) the investee must serve the needs of Xiaomi if the latter owns a considerable stake in it.

しかし、iHealthやAnt cameraといった企業のロゴは、Xiaomストアで販売しているこれらの企業の商品に使用されているので、3番目の問題は必ずしも真実ではないかもしれない。

So what is Xiaomi’s business model? (It’s not the Apple of China). Producing connected devices, selling them at low margins, ensuring user stickiness with its software platform (or MIUI, a customized Android system) even if they switch to new devices, and sourcing revenue via the software platform through paid content and services, advertising, and other online monetization approaches.

Xiaomi has self-designed four smartphones, a tablet, a smart TV, Wi-Fi routers, a Pressy-like Android button, and a Wi-Fi dongle. But the company cannot self-design and produce every connected device on the market, especially when smart gadgets are popping up everywhere.

Xiaomi ships over 1 million Mi Band fitness trackers in just 3 months

Xiaomi already shipped over one million Mi Bands since the device went on sale on August 18 to November 28, according to the fitness tracker’s official Weibo account. At its peak, it sold 103,000 in a single day.

To put that into perspective, only about 3.3 million fitness bands and activity trackers were sold between April 2013 and March 2014 in the US, according to the NPD group (h/t Recode). Fitbit is the bestseller in the American market, making up 67 percent (roughly 2.1 million units) of sales in that one-year period.

While those stats don’t account for shipments outside the US, it looks like the RMB 79 (US$13) Mi Band is well on its way to the top spot as the world’s bestselling fitness tracker, especially as it reaches more countries. It’s still only officially available in China, for now, and will go on sale in Hong Kong and Taiwan tomorrow.

Xiaomi also reports the total number of recorded steps accumulated by all Mi Band users surpassed 80 billion.

Xiaomi’s smart lightbulb enters beta

A couple of months after Xiaomi’s four new smart home gadgets were announced, one of them – the Yeelight smart lightbulb – is nearly ready to make its debut. The Xiaomi Router’s official Weibo account posted on Monday that the Yeelight is now entering beta testing. The Yeelight is an LED lightblub that can display more than 1,600 different colors. Its companion app allows you to control the lightbulb remotely, and select light presets for specific circumstances like “waking up” or “watching a movie.”

Hugo Barra talks about Xiaomi’s progress in Indonesia and India

Hugo Barra from Xiaomi joins us on stage this afternoon at Startup Asia Jakarta 2014 to talk about Xiaomi and its progress in Indonesia.

He says Xiaomi was “clearly world-standard” when he was considering making the move away from Google’s Android team last year, and he’d been following its progress even before that because of early links between Google and Xiaomi’s founders.

“We want to be part of everything that Google does – we want to be early adopters,” says Barra to interviewer Jeremy Wagstaff from Thompson Reuters.

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun invests in huge housing project for young startups

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun is investing an RMB 100 million (US$16.3 million) series A round of funding into You+ International Youth Apartments. According to Techweb, the investment was completed in August.

You+, an apartment project aimed at entrepreneurs, was co-founded by Su Di, the founder of Beijing’s iconic Garage Cafe, a popular coworking space in the Zhongguancun tech and startup district of the city. Seeing that Chinese startups often cluster together in small areas, he wanted to create the housing project as a utopia for entrepreneurs.

The two eight-story complexes being renovated in Guangzhou are aimed at single people below the age of 45. Each contains 100 housing units. They will be set up to encourage a close-knit community atmosphere and strong communication among the residents.

Essentially, they are dormitories set up as startup living spaces. 20-square meter four-person bedrooms each have a bathroom but no kitchen, according to Netease Tech. Residents can cook in the cafeteria or communal kitchens. Each building has a gym, billiards room, bar, game room, and open areas for meetups.
