The idea of connecting family members through a healthy bond sounds like a great idea that Chinese customers would buy, but will this price be competitive in both markets still remains to be seen. Good luck to Sense-U.

31% of parents in Singapore think entrepreneurship is top career path

Latest research from LinkedIn, a social network for professionals, revealed that Singaporean parents might not understand their child’s job

Does your mother or father know what you’re doing? Chances are, they probably don’t.

According to a global study conducted by LinkedIn, a social network for professionals, in 14 countries with 16,102 parents, 46 percent of 1,943 Singaporean parents surveyed do not understand what their child does for a living.

Singaporean parents also revealed that the top career paths they would like their child to pursue. While 37 percent and 34 percent of them chose finance and doctor respectively, a good 31 percent rated entrepreneurship as their top choice.

The survey results were announced today at LinkedIn’s Bring In Your Parents Day in Singapore. Hari Krishnan, Managing Director, Asia Pacific & Japan, LinkedIn, told the parents of employees present that the objective of the event was to give them a sense of what their children are up to.

In Singapore alone, LinkedIn has more than a million members and 120 employees. In Asia Pacific, the company has 46 million members, and more than 600 employees.

It began with a bogus scallop, but a menu scandal that has engulfed some of Japan's most prestigious hotels and department stores now threatens to undermine the international reputation of the country's vaunted cuisine.

Since one luxury hotel chain admitted lying about the provenance of ingredients on its menus last month, Japanese media have served up almost daily revelations of similar transgressions by restaurants run by well-known hotels and department stores.

The frenzy began when the Hankyu Hanshin hotel chain, based in Osaka, admitted it had given false descriptions of dozens of menu items at some of its restaurants between 2006 and last month, affecting an estimated 78,000 diners.

Steven Baek, Head of Global Operations, IUM, tells e27 that on average, IUM makes US$500,000 to US$600,000 in Korea every month with more than one million downloads in the country. Hey, on the other hand, is said to have more than 8,000 downloads since its launch.

About 70 percent of the Korean crowd are paying customers, who purchase in-app currency to unlock special features. Skeptical, this author asked Baek why he decided to go with the payment option. He explains that in the real world, men who buy women drinks at bars face the risk of not having their interests reciprocated. This should be replicated in the online dating scene.

What eventually happened was that these lookalikes could not keep up with the pace of the recommendation algorithm. IUM also runs partnerships with brands to do cross-marketing campaigns, and host movies which are aired at theatres.

“The biggest difference between them and us is the algorithm. If you sign up, it’s really easy to throw someone at you, or use a personal touch having someone do the matching everyday. IUM has a really sophisticated pattern to its algorithm,” he says. “It learns as you use it. If you give us all the information, our system learns what kind of person you don’t like, or like.”

Hey and IUM come with a rating system, which this author tested after using the app. It costs 15 rubies on the Hey app to see how matches rate one another. While some do use the feature, it seems that many do not rate their dates as they will not be prompted to do that, even though they might get a free ruby for it.

Well, IUM or Hey aren’t about looking for the next relationship or friends with benefits. He says, “Obviously, everybody wants someone good looking, handsome or pretty, hot sexy girl, everyone wants that. But that’s not going to be your soulmate.”

It is also all set to launch KirimanKu, an online platform for customers, in November, that will allow customers to manage their shipping activities online, monitor and trace shipment status, acknowledge billings; and craft daily, weekly and monthly shipment reports on a customized basis.

Kirim, that was relaunched last year with a new brand name, was operating with the umbrella name – Pt Diamonds Inti Corpora, till then. Currently, Kirim is focused on providing service in Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi.

Kirim, currently, has a team of 40 employees – 25 of them are couriers. The company claims that it serves 6,495 sub-districts in 500 cities throughout Indonesia and more than 220 countries worldwide. Commenting on the need to scale up, she says “We are planning to open other hubs and counters in Jakarta. Considering the demand, we consider to set-up branches in major cities across Indonesia."

Tencent Has Invested $2 bn in Overseas Markets. Here’s the Full List.

Tencent has invested $2 billion in overseas markets, a large part of which went to startups, disclosed Martin Lau, president of Tencent, at GMIC 2013 Sillicon Valley. Not only does Tencent inject money into those startups, the company would also pass on experience or help them enter China market, he said.

Online gaming has been the major contributor to its total revenues and Tencent counts on mobile gaming in order to monetize the huge user base it has already had through WeChat, Mobile QQ and other mobile apps. So most of foreign businesses Tencent has stakes in are gaming-related.

Tencentの社長であるMartin Lau 氏はシリコンバレーで行われたGMIC2013 でTencentが海外マーケットで$20億の投資し、そのほとんどがスタートアップへの投資だと発表した。さらにTencentはスタートアップへの金銭面の投資だけではなく、中国マーケット進出の為に、過去の経験談の伝達や支援も行うという。

Chunyuyisheng, Mobile Health App, Released 4.0 Version

Chunyuyisheng, a mobile health app, unveiled 4.0 version which integrates the previous inquiry and disease searching functions into a searching engine (report in Chinese).

The searching results include information of different diseases, nearby doctors, therapeutic methods, and Q&A.

Since lots of patients ask similar questions, Chunyuyisheng established a searching engine with new algorithm and rich data, helping users to diagnose their symptoms based on previous questions. For example, the service will list 51 similar questions according to their relevance degree defined in terms of gender, age, and inquiry content.

たくさんの患者から似たような質問を受けたことで、春雨医生は新アルゴリズムや豊富なデータを駆使して検索エンジンを構築した。これによって、過去の質問に基づいて、患者の症状の診断の手助けができるという。性別や年齢、問い合わせた質問に応じて似たような51の質問を一覧化するサービスなどが提供される。

The company claimed that its service will beat Baidu in healthcare sector. Because all its searching results come from doctors and there is no advertisement or promotion contents on the platform, while Baidu just lists the links related to specific keywords and ads usually haunt the users.

In addition, the company planned to launch vertical channels in the field of parenting and maternal care. With 14 million registered users and over 8,000 doctors, Chunyuyisheng recorded around 20,000 new questions per day, according to data released by the company.

Nearly 8 million children get lost every year. The shocking statistic inspired Taiwanese startup, Beluvv, to create Guardian, a small wearable device that is able to track a child’s movements. Most notably, the device is paired up with a smartphone app using Bluetooth and utilizes the network of users to help each other find a child when the child goes out of the parent’s pre-set radar.
