"If the board is willing to sell [Yahoo], I’m interested. They’ve just got to let us know.

We’ve been working with Yahoo for years to buy a portion of them or buy them out. Money is not the problem. The problem is what Yahoo wants to do."

But Jack Ma conceded that they’re just waiting for the board to say something, and that his own mind is set on this issue. He went on to say that he doesn’t know what the Yahoo board is pondering. On why Yahoo is so important to the industry…

"Without Yahoo, I wouldn’t have started my Internet business."

Ma said that he’d bring in new management if he were in charge of Yahoo, but declined to name a sort of dream team for the job.

No mention was made of a potential IPO for Alibaba Group or its two consumer-oriented e-commerce sites. So far, only its B2B platform Alibaba.com (HKG:1688) has listed.

On the subject of copyright and copycats, Mr Ma said he didn’t agree with the view that Chinese sites tended to copy others, and said the point is to make your customers happy in whatever way you can – even if that entails following in someone else’s footsteps. That sounds a bit like our editorial, “Screw the Idea, It’s the Execution That Really Matters.”

But he maintained a harder stance on copyright, saying:

"We will never step back from our stance on intellectual property problems … This problem can’t be solved by Alibaba alone, it has to be solved by Alibaba working with its merchants."

Tmall.comの仮想抗議について

"Sometimes the people that love you most are the people that hurt you most."

That was Ma’s phlegmatic comment on the week-long virtual protests by smaller businesses over greatly increased user deposits for a store on Tmall. The issue was resolved this Monday when Alibaba promised to invest 1.8 billion RMB to help smaller vendors use the platform.

For a somewhat divergent perspective, none other than Yahoo’s Jerry Yang – co-founder and former CEO – spoke earlier at AsiaD and said:

"The intent going in is not to put ourselves for sale. The intent is to look at all the options."

LinkedIn Launches in Japan, Poised for 20 Million Users in Asia

We all knew this was coming from news earlier this year, but we were a bit taken by surprise just now to learn that LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) held a press conference today to announce its Japanese launch as well as its new office in Tokyo.

The AP quotes LinkedIn’s head of operations in the Asia Pacific region, Arvind Rajand, as saying:

" We think there are tremendous opportunities for growth not only in Japan but in entire region … If you look at LinkedIn’s business as a whole around the world, we feel we’re still just scratching the surface."

A quick revisit to LinkedIn’s own ad-generator tool (which we will assume is relatively accurate) shows that LinkedIn still doesn’t even have half a million users in Japan (418,848 users, according to our latest check). That’s a gain of about 50,000 users, since we last checked four months back.

As for the rest of Asia, India still accounts for the majority of the region’s users, with over 12,000,000 LinkedIn users. Next is China, with about 1.7 million. The total for Asia user count sits at 19,640,610.

Vetter Streamlines the Idea Generation Process

Canvassing ideas and then getting feedback can be a pain in the ass. But the internet world isn’t short of solutions. Some might use Facebook questions while others use Twitter with hashtags, or even Google spreadsheets/forms to collect ideas. But Taiwan-based start-up, Vetter, feels that it has a better method to collect, rate, and compile good ideas.

Vetter is a web-based solution for managers to engage with their team members on problem-solving. Anyone invited to the group on Vetter can submit ideas on any problems posted by the “boss.” And any team member can also rate the quality of the ideas on a scale from one to five stars.

China’s “Silicon Valley” Malls Looking to Go Legit

Beijing’s Zhongguancun neighborhood, in the city’s northwest, has long been recognized as the center of its tech industry. Many of China’s largest internet companies make their headquarters in the area, and it’s also home to more than a few start-ups. But to the average consumer, Zhongguancun is probably best known for its several giant electronics malls. Now, the Haidian district government is looking to change that.

In other words, if you like haggling with small-time vendors over computer parts, you’d better get your fix now, because in a couple years, those guys will be gone and you’ll be smack-dab in the center of some giant Samsung store’s “product experience center” wondering whatever happened to your favorite CPU cooling unit sellers.

Of course, the policies are brand-spankin’ new, and it remains to be see what retailers will jump on the “official store” bandwaagon and try to set up shop in Zhongguancun. But given the massive success of Apple’s branded shop on the other side of the city, and the lucrative compensation offered to companies willing to give it a shot, we’ll be surprised if there aren’t new brand shops popping up like flies in Zhongguancun within a year or two.

A shift to more branded stores would be a mixed blessing for consumers, who may or may not welcome the chance to buy from official shops. On the one hand, official branded shops are seen as more trustworthy. Their goods aren’t likely to be fake, and returns are generally easier than when dealing with a third-party vendor. On the other hand, though, larger branded shops means fewer choices, and probably higher prices, especially since most branded shops we’ve been to don’t allow haggling, which can save the skilled consumer quite a bit of money in the Zhongguancun malls now (though unskilled hagglers may just as easily find themselves overpaying for everything).

Specifically, to be eligible for the compensation money, shops must be at least 500 square meters in size — way larger than the average small vendor’s shop — and must contain a “product experience center” where potential customers can try out the goods.

The second offers those companies compensation of up to 5,000,000 RMB (about $780,000) towards the cost of setting up official brand shops in the malls, assuming that the shops they build meet certain specifications.

Like most electronics malls in China, the Zhongguancun shopping centers are multi-floor monstrosities filled with hundreds of small vendors who are often selling a particular brand or multiple brands of a particular product. They are a PC nerd’s fantasy — in one mall, you can probably find twenty different retailers that are just dedicated to selling CPU cooling units, for example — but they’re a branding nightmare, as almost none of the stores are official. In fact, Beijing’s biggest officially branded tech store — the Apple store — is on the other side of the city.

Chinese Social Gaming Vendor Happy Elements Raising US$ 30M from Legend Capital, DCM

Chinese social gaming vendor Happy Elements announced today raising US$ 30 million in Series B round of funding from Legend Capital with previous investor DCM participating. The funding, according to its CEO Wang Haining, will go towards team beef-up as well as R&D speed-up.

The company has been making gaming titles distributed through 15 of the world’s most popular social platform, including Facebook, Tencent Pengyou, Tencent Qzone, Mixi, Gree, Cyworld, Daum, StuVZ, Kaixin001, RenRen and so on. It claims to own 2.5Million daily active users on Facebook, the #2 and #3 popular games on Mixi in Japan.

The Beijing-based company has also extended its reach into new territory by unveiling three mobile titles in Japan.

Happy Elements raised US$ 5 million from DCM in middle 2010.
