The new Series C funding round was led by Index Ventures, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Bain Capital Ventures, Battery Ventures, Benchmark Capital, Citi Ventures, Correlation Ventures, Danhua Capital, Pharus Capital Management, Salesforce Ventures, and Tenaya Capital.

Judging by that list, it appears that lots of investors wanted to get in on the round, which may have influenced the final amount. The round brings the company’s funding total to $146 million. Index Ventures partner Ilya Fushman joins Optimizely’s board.

Optimizely has indeed been playing in a growth space. In a recent Adobe survey of 259 marketing executives, 66 percent said they’re using A/B testing, compared to just 56 percent last year.

Optimizely has picked up a big chunk of market share in the burgeoning space. Its biggest customers include CNN (which uses Optimizely to see which of its headlines work best), Crate and Barrel, Intuit, Microsoft Store, Priceline, and Virgin America.

“It also has a free plan in its current pricing that is limited to certain features and 50,000 monthly unique visitors, which appeals to small businesses,” said VB Insights analyst Stewart Rogers.

Optimizely seems to be aware of the need to expand its offering. The company recently added a new personalization platform, which uses first-party and third-party customer data to customize content delivered to specific consumers.

And there’s more to come. “We’re going to build out our platform for testing and personalization, and we’re also planning on rolling out multiple new products over the next year,” Siroker said.

Optimizely was identified as one of the leading vendors in the content-testing category in a September Forrester Wave ranking.

Forrester analyst James McCormick identified Optimizely as a “disruptive force in the online testing space,” crediting the platform with building out sophisticated enterprise capabilities, getting above-average feedback from customers on the usability and ease of use of its testing platform, and offering the strongest agency and services partner programs.

That last item refers to the fact that Optimizely integrates with many of the marketing automation platforms that customers already use. The company also has partnerships with consultants who work directly with businesses to set up and use Optimizely effectively, Siroker explained.

Siroker started Optimizely after serving as the director of analytics on the 2008 Obama campaign. “I saw an opportunity to address a pain point and make it easier to deliver relevant content,” he said during a phone interview Monday.

The company said it will use the new funds to hire the engineers needed to expand its delivery channels beyond email, mobile, and web, saying it intends to allow for “full-circle recommendations across all channels and optimize the entire audience journey.”

Boomtrain currently has more than 100 customers using its platform, including CBS Interactive, The Guardian, and Thrillist Media Group. For instance, CBS Interactive uses the platform to tailor-fit the content of its newsletters to individual readers in different regions.

Boomtrain claimed that publisher and ecommerce clients using the platform regularly see “50 percent to 100 percent-plus increases” in engagement, including higher clickthrough-rates, page views, time on site, and conversions.

Founded in 2012, Boomtrain is backed by top-tier VC firms including Sierra Ventures, Cota Capital, Crosslink Capital, and Lerer Ventures.

The platform then uses what it knows about an individual customer to deliver them the most relevant of the content it’s crawled and analyzed. Much of the customer and content data comes to Boomtrain from the client company itself.

Boomtrain pulls in no third-party data sets to match consumers with content, Edwards said. It’s a privacy concern, part of the “don’t be creepy” maxim used at Boomtrain. For instance, Boomtrain wouldn’t use Facebook data about some photo a user shared last year, but it might use data about a user making a comment about the client’s product.

Any social network, especially one known for providing an authentic experience, is bound to generate negative sentiment whenever it injects ads. But this huge shift in how people feel about Instagram ads suggests the current balance is hurting its users. It is too early to investigate app data to determine if the change is having an effect on Instagram’s growth rate.

Whether the changes in ad frequency are permanent or not, I can’t say. We marketers are known for trying experiments, measuring the response, and making incremental improvements based on what we see. And despite requests, nobody from Instagram made themselves available to comment on the results of the survey, so I can’t offer any feedback direct from the horse’s mouth.

Yes, the API does offer some degradation of the experience, especially when I receive likes and followers that are clearly doing so by automatically monitoring keywords. But blocking spam is an easy task, as is reporting offenders.

Alongside Instagram, I use the official Twitter app, and I’ve recently started producing Snapchat stories. Facebook’s app doesn’t feature on my phone, and it appears — according to our respondents — that I’m not alone. Despite the social network’s massive 1.5 billion monthly active users, the first results from my survey tell me that Instagram appeals to a different demographic.

First the good news.

In our survey, we see that only 73 percent of Instagram users also use the Facebook mobile app regularly, despite having an audience nearly four times bigger to draw from. Around 40 percent use Snapchat, and just under 40 percent use Twitter. Fewer still use the Pinterest app on their mobile devices, and the low ‘other’ score helps to ratify that these results aren’t massively skewed.

This tells us that Instagram users are fairly loyal to the app, and that the majority use it as their primary social network.

We then asked these Instagram users whether they felt that the service made it clear when they are viewing an advertisement.

While a small percentage (19 percent) weren’t sure, Instagram is clearly doing a good job of labeling ads in the stream for almost 60 percent of users.

So was I alone in noticing an increase in ad cadence?

Before I could answer that question with any sense of authority, I needed to know how long each respondent spends inside the app. Questions about perceived ad frequency are reasonable to ask of a user who spends an hour per day in the app, but not so fair for someone who spends just a few minutes checking out their friends’ four-inch-wide #nofilter sunsets every month.

The first interesting data point from this qualifying question is that our respondents spend 31 minutes per day, on average, inside Instagram. That’s a big increase over the previously reported figure, which last year suggested that Instagram users spend an average of 21 minutes inside the app each day.

We took the responses of those that visited the Instagram app daily, and it is clear that the changes in ad frequency have been duly noted. In fact, of those who use the Instagram app daily, 59.45 percent had noticed the difference.

So now the bad news.

These changes have made a big difference in how people feel about ads within the Instagram app. And by big, I mean huge. But huge is subjective, so let me quantify that for you.

Before the new frequency, just under a third of daily users were happy with the level of ads, a third didn’t care, and just over a third hated it.

The numbers? 32.6 percent were happy, 25.9 percent sat on the fence, and 41.4 percent were unhappy.

Instagram’s early users were always resistant to ads coming into the stream, so it wasn’t surprising that a slight majority still felt bad about them.

Now, six out of ten daily Instagram users are unhappy. 58.3 percent of the very people that help make Instagram what it is — the raving fans that use it daily — have turned to the dark side.

“One-star” responses alone grew by over 180 percent, and “five-star” experiences are now under half what they were before the new cadence came into play.

The value of fostering cooperation rather than competition lies not only in conversation and idea sharing but, more importantly, in the creation of stronger networks of entrepreneurs who want to help each other. Ultimately, individual entrepreneurs looking to help each other out will lead to faster growth and more success for the overall ecosystem.

Incentivize

City life, while beneficial and exciting in many ways, often comes with a price. High rents or even something like a lack of easy parking can act as a deterrent to entrepreneurs looking to set up businesses in a particular location, while the high cost of living can prevent young talent from settling in a city.

In order to combat this problem, Tel Aviv offers various municipal tax reductions to entrepreneurs and startups looking to open up shop – such as a reduction of taxes on certain offices. In addition, the city has pursued several initiatives to make city life attractive to young people, from city-wide free WiFi to a bike sharing system and regular free cultural events. Making it easier and more comfortable for young people to live in the city hub is critical, since young talent is the lifeblood of innovation and growth.

Diversify

In order to further the growth of any ecosystem, it is important to have a diverse range of ideas, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences to broaden the scope of potential startups and to create a more fruitful ecosystem. One major hurdle we are trying to overcome currently in Tel Aviv is that 98 percent of the workers in the startup sector are Israeli. This is in comparison to Silicon Valley, where 50 percent of the startup population are foreigners.
