Chinese startup for startups raises $2.4M angel round

China’s startup market has exploded over the past couple of years, buoyed by the increase in available funding. There’s a startup (or five) for basically everything you can imagine, including – of course – startups for other startups. The latest example is Joychuang, a startup services platform and app, which has just raised a seed round of RMB 15 million (US$2.4 million) from Pangu Venture Capital.

Joychuang is a Software-as-a-Service company aimed directly at other startups and their founders. Through its mobile app and offline events (it does have two locations in startup hubs of Beijing and Shanghai) it aims to help founders raise money, recruit talent, find office space, host events, and much more. It advertises itself as a one-stop shop for startup services, and its offerings also include accounting services and help legally registering your company. It is (at least in theory) a bit like an online incubator.

Joychuangは他者の起業をターゲットととしたSoftware-as-a-Service会社であり、提供するモバイルアプリとオフラインイベント（スタートアップの拠点である北京と上海の2ヵ所に会場を持つ）を通じて、起業家の資金調達、優秀な人材の募集、事務所スペース探し、イベント開催、その他多くの支援を目標とする。Joychuangは自らをスタートアップのための総合サービスと宣伝し、提供するサービスには会計支援や会社の登記も含まれており、オンラインインキュベーターのようなもの（少なくとも理論的には）である。

Joychuang promises quite a lot; whether it can deliver is another story. Founder Wu Minghua has a history of doing startups focused on other startups that includes three other companies and dates back to 2003, so he certainly has experience on his side. But it’s clear the company is still in the very early stages. Its website looks pretty unprofessional, and the app download link on it doesn’t seem to work (it also inexplicably features a huge picture of a gorgeous seaside village in Greece on its “Contact Us” page).

The app itself isn’t much better. I get the impression the company intends to offer many services itself in the long run, but right now Joychuang’s app just forwards you to other providers. If you’re looking for help with accounting, for example, it has a list of several third-party companies that do startup accounting, but there’s no way to actually do anything beyond contact them from within the app. So much for one-stop services.

Still, Joychuang is young, and the US$2.4 million seed round it just raised should help quite a bit. Can this startup-for-startups achieve its promise as a true one-stop SaaS company, or is it doomed to become a listings site that points founders towards third-party providers?

アプリ自体もイケていない。Joychuang社はいずれは幅広いサービスを提供する予定ではあるが、現段階では同社のアプリは他のプロバイダーに転送しているだけのような印象を受ける。例えば会計士を探している場合、スタートアップの会計を行う第三者の会社がいくつか表示されるが、アプリではこれらの会社に連絡を取る以上のことをできるわけではない。大した総合サービスだこと。
ただ、Joychuangはまだ若い会社なので、シードラウンドで調達した240万米ドルも大いに役立てられることであろう。このスタートアップのためのスタートアップは総合的なSaas会社としての約束を果たすことができるのか、あるいは起業家を代車者へ誘導するだけのリスティングサイトになってしまうのか。

Syngency empowers modeling agencies with feature-rich booking features and website management software, as well as convenient online and mobile tools and integration with cloud-based accounting. Agents can easily keep track of bookings and models can receive up-to-date booking and job information. The company has customers in English speaking markets, and is looking to expand into Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.

Syngency (ニュージーランド)

Syngencyはモデル事務所に対して、豊富な能なブッキング機能とウェブ管理ソフトに加え、便利なオンラインまたはモバイルツールおよびクラウド型会計システムを提供する。事務所は容易にブッキングの管理ができ、モデルは細心のブッキングの詳細情報を受け取ることができる。現在は英語圏の顧客を対象としているが台湾、香港および日本への進出を予定している。

Loopd

FIISER

FIISER is a search engine for free apps. Once a startup is uploaded on its web or app, a user can immediately try out apps without having to download them. This cross-platform ‘In-App Search’ search engine embraces more than 2,260,000 apps in the market.

Loopd
不特定多数を交流させる場合、イベントの出席者数が目標に達するか保証がない。Loopdでは出席者同士の連絡先の交換、マーケティング資料の収集、講演会にチェックインが可能になる。物理分析の手法を用いればマーケティング担当者はも最も重要な取引先とより高次な関係を構築することができるようになる。

FIISER
FIISERは無料アプリの検索エンジンである。ユーザーはスタートアップがウェブまたはアプリにアップロードされた瞬間から、これらをダウンロードせずに試用できる。このクロスプラットフォームの検索エンジン「In-App Search」は市場の226万件のアプリを包含しているのである。

Docceo

Founded in 2012, Docceo made DigiJames, which allows guests to control room’s lighting, temperature, curtains as well as request room service or make reservations. It also accesses tourist information to explore the local shopping. Previously selected as Gartner Cool Vendor 2014, DigiJames recently launched in partnership with Microsoft.

Hilight

Hilight make a social community platform for social media to highlight valuable information from larger content. By downloading the app or plug-in on Chrome, users can mark up important points on website, collect favorite articles, recommend good content to friends and share it publicly.

Docceo

2012年設立のDocceo社は、宿泊客に照明、空調、カーテンの調整のみならず、ルームサービスの依頼から予約までできるようしたDigiJamesを開発した。ツーリストインフォメーションにもつながり、DigiJames現地での買い物についても検討できる。2014年ぼGartner Cool Vendorに選ばれ、最近Microsoft社と提携してローンチする運びとなった。

Pictures and videos are integrated into a user’s dive log, which becomes a timeline, detailing the depth and location of each image.

The foundation of Uber’s stratospheric valuation is growth. Since 2009, Uber has expanded to serve 300 cities across the globe, and the company has long pitched its ambitions to dominate more than the taxi industry (think: couriers, moving, food delivery, etc). The potential has VCs’ mouths watering, despite the constant legislative setbacks and legal ambiguity.

What’s next? The company could go public. Or raise a couple billion more and delay such a move. Who the hell knows?

And that is a key point here. VPNs serve as vital tools for those who live in strict regimes where access to online services are routinely blocked. Last year, for example, Turkey banned Twitter after allegations of government corruption circulated through the social network. The upshot? VPN uptake went through the roof.

The market

TunnelBear operates in an increasingly competitive space with options aplenty to protect your location and identity online. Perhaps the most well-known VPN provider out there is Hotspot Shield, though its free version is supported by ads and it doesn’t have a browser-based version.

Perhaps one more factor in TunnelBear’s armory is its charming tunneling bear animations that permeate the app. Sure, some may argue that they’re gimmicky, but they are fun and perhaps serve to ease a new user into the VPN experience.

How Facebook’s cold storage preserves your old photos

Facebook has done a whole lot of work in order to keep your oldest and least popular photos neatly tucked away and ready to be served up whenever people want to look at them. Today Facebook is opening up about many of the ideas its infrastructure team has implemented in the two cold storage facilities it maintains at its data centers in Oregon and North Carolina.

People share 2 billion photos on Facebook’s services every day, so Facebook needs to store them efficiently. And Facebook has made improvements on hardware and software to deal with that scale.

Each big room, or data hall, inside the cold storage buildings, can currently handle 1 exabyte — a thousand petabytes, or a million terabytes, or a billion gigabytes, and every rack can take two petabytes, Facebook’s Krish Bandaru and Kestutis Patiejunas wrote in a blog post today.

Other web companies, like Google and Microsoft, have made extensive customizations on their infrastructure over the years, but Facebook has been the most transparent, launching the Open Compute Project to share its hardware designs with others in 2011. Facebook’s cold storage systems are one of many components of Open Compute.

・These facilities use just a quarter of power that traditional storage servers do.
・Facebook updated the firmware in the hard drive controller in order to make sure that only one drive gets turned on at a time.
・Facebook dropped the number of fans in each storage node from six to four.
・The number of power shelves decreased from three to one.
・The number of power supplies per shelf went down from seven to five.

・Facebook ran into a problem — the racks were too heavy for the system Facebook had to get them to the place where they needed to be. Here’s Bandaru and Patiejunas: “For example, one of our test production runs hit a complete standstill when we realized that the data center personnel simply could not move the racks. Since these racks were a modification of the OpenVault system, we used the same rack castors that allowed us to easily roll the racks into place. But the inclusion of 480 4 TB drives drove the weight to over 1,100 kg, effectively crushing the rubber wheels. This was the first time we’d ever deployed a rack that heavy, and it wasn’t something we’d originally baked into the development plan!”
