To learn more about the potential impact of an active Alibaba, Tech in Asia reached out to Melissa Guzy, founder of Arbor Ventures and Vinnie Lauria, founder of Golden Gate Ventures, both of whom are very active in Southeast Asia. Here is what they had to say.

How will Alibaba’s IPO influence the startup scene in Asia?

MG: Success breeds success and of course the record-setting IPO valuation has made an impression on young entrepreneurs and has shown them the value of stock from years of hard work.

VL: Quite positively, as it brings more attention to the region, especially being the largest IPO in history, it’s going to make many more US and global investors look at this region.

There has been talk that Alibaba is going to aggressively expand outside of Asia. Will it be taking a partnership or independent approach to potential competitors in Asia?

MG: Alibaba is already investing aggressively outside of China and will likely continue to do so especially with a large war chest. It can afford to acquire leading edge technology and global engineering talent.

MG：Alibabaは既に中国国外に精力的に投資しており、特に巨大な軍資金を持っていることから考えても、これからもそうし続けるであろうと考えられます。先端技術、及びエンジニアリングにおけるグローバル人材を取得できるだけの余裕があります。

VL: I’d imagine in other parts of Southeast Asia it will take a mix of competitive approach, and also an M&A approach for land grabs – this is good opportunity for healthy exits for some startups. Outside of Asia, I think they’ll be able to continue an independent approach to create B2B value to allow Chinese merchants to connect with a global audience.

In which Southeast Asian market is Alibaba most likely to succeed? Least likely?

MG: It will depend upon which market segments in which local partners. There are few markets in SEA that are large enough to be stand alone and it requires significant effort. The largest single market is Indonesia and hard to ignore for a company like Alibaba.

Are there any relevant lessons from Rakuten’s attempted global expansion that Alibaba can learn?

MG: I think that Rakuten has learned that cultural differences matter and localization is important, which is the same lesson that the US Internet companies learned when they entered China.

VL: Work with local payments providers – don’t try to do it yourself. Buy larger global players that can help with distribution, partnerships, and customer access like Viber, Ebates, etc.

Alibabaが、楽天のグローバル拡大化の試みから学ぶことのできる、明らかな教訓はありますか？

MG: 楽天は、文化の違いは大事であり、ローカリゼーションは大切だと学んだと思います。これは、アメリカのインターネット企業が中国に進出するときに学んだのと同じ教訓だと思います。

How urgent a need does Alibaba have to expand in the first place? Why cannot it not just stay in China?

MG: Alibaba can grow in China for many years as more and more people enter the middle class. It has global ambitions, which is no different to Google and Facebook and is very popular in Southeast Asia.

そもそも、Alibabaの拡大は、どれくらい急を要していることなのでしょうか？なぜ、同社は中国にとどまり続けてはいけないのでしょうか？

MG: Alibabaは、中国人の中間所得層が更に増えるにつれ、中国においてこれから何年も成長し続ける事ができます。同社はグローバル化の野心があり、これはGoogleやFacebookとなんら変わるものではなく、東南アジアではとてもよく見られることです。

VL: I don’t think it’s urgent, but i think the public markets in the U.S. want to see continued aggressive growth. Alibaba can continue to do that in China for a while, but will need to make big steps in other markets to keep up with US investors hunger for aggressive year-over-year growth that is common for technology companies. This applies whether Alibaba expands into new verticals, new product lines, or new geographies.

VL: そんなに急を要するものではないと思いますが、アメリカの公開市場は、勢いのある持続的な成長を好みます。Alibabaも、しばらくは中国国内でそれを実現できるでしょうが、アメリカの投資家の強く欲する、テクノロジー企業によく見られるように毎年どんどん成長を続けるには、他の市場で大きな一歩を踏み出さないといけません。つまり、Alibabaにとっては、新しい垂直市場、新しい製品群、新しい地域への拡大、ということになります。

Khailee’s take

Khailee Ng, venture partner at 500 Startups, also chimed in. He sees Alibaba’s IPO as a boon for the Southeast Asian tech ecosystem as a whole. He tells Tech in Asia:

“Jack Ma has reminded the world that the journey of building a global tech giant isn’t exclusive to Silicon Valley. And this reminder is especially timely as other markets outside of the US and China mature. Will we see multi-billion dollar giants emerge from Southeast Asia in years to come? Let’s let the Alibaba story stir up courage in emerging market founders to say ‘HELL YEAH.’”

I can’t verify whether this is a persistent problem across all devices, or if it’s just an isolated incident with my phone and Mi Band. But it’s growing to be a rather frustrating dealbreaker for me.

The app and metrics

The Mi Band app opens to a step counter and feed of your recent sleep cycles and walking activity. You can track previous days’ steps, how far you’ve walked, and how many calories you’ve burned. For sleep cycles, the Mi Band monitors how long you slept and for how long you were in a “deep sleep.” The app does little to advise on how the users can improve their daily cycles, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing for those who just want a clear cut readout and not a robot coach.

このことが全てのデバイスで見られる持続的な問題なのか、私の電話とMi Bandのみで見られる単独の現象なのかは確認できない。しかしこのことは、私にとってはどちらかというと苛立たしい、交渉を難航させるものに発展している。

Xiaomi Android Button Mi Key Integrates Chinese Taxi App Kuaidi

Mi Key, the Pressy-like programmable physical button for Android devices developed by Xiaomi, has integrated Kuaidi, one of the leading taxi apps in China, that the latter can be opened with one button click.

If there’s no Kuaidi app in your Android phone, the Mi Key’s accompanying app will direct you to an app store to download and install it. Mi Key was launched in April this year as one of the Chinese clones of Pressy — The others include Qihoo 360′s Smart Button and Quick Button.

Xiaomi Androidボタン Mi Keyが中国のTaxiアプリのKuiaidiと統合

Xiaomiによって開発された、Android機器向けのPressyのようなプログラム可能な物理的なボタンであるMi Keyは、中国の主要なTaxiアプリの一つであるKuiaidiと統合し、後者はボタンを一回クリックするだけで開けるようになった。

Those Chinese buttons have similar functions with Pressy’s, such as taking photos, switching on the torch and capturing screenshots. The Xiaomi Mi Key is sold for RMB4.9 (about US$0.8) — cheap enough.

Xiaomi said more integrations with third-party services like Kuaidi will be available later on.

The Qihoo’s button and Quick Button have been merged — It is reported that the former had invested the latter, and Qihoo decided earlier this month to give them away, hoping to have users adopt the company’s software products that have been integrated with the buttons or will be added later on, or channel users to other services of the company.

Both those moves again underscore the powerful draw of China’s fast-growing online shopping market. Chinese consumers will spend an estimated US$275 billion on B2C (business-to-consumer) sites such as Alibaba’s Tmall and arch-rival JD this year. That’ll rise to US$440 billion by 2016.

Since 2012, a number of major US-based brand names, including Apple, Microsoft, Bose, Nike, Gap, Levi’s, Disney, New Balance, and the National Football League have launched stores on Tmall. Earlier this year, European companies including luxury brand Burberry and ASOS joined Tmall as well.

Companies are adopting different approaches to win the wallets of Chinese online shoppers. For example, British fashion retailer Topshop made a new move last month, striking a deal with Shangpin, a Chinese estore that sells multi-brand contemporary fashion from labels such as Lanvin, La Perla, and Diane von Furstenberg.

Western retailers struggle to decide whether to open their own independent online store in China, or join an existing marketplace like Tmall or JD. However, given that Tmall accounts for around 50 percent of B2C online retail sales in China, it has been winning and is the preferred starting point for most foreign firms entering China’s ecommerce market.
