It’s far too soon to speculate if this some kind of Microsoft response to Google+, but as Fusible points out in a different article, Microsoft’s domain activity — which may include a purchase of social.com, too — has all happened in the past two weeks, after Google+ launched on June 28th.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update this story if/when we get more information.

Postscript: A Microsoft spokesperson tells us that Socl.com is “an internal design project from one of Microsoft’s research teams which was mistakenly published to the web.” The website shown in the screenshots above has been removed and a message on socl.com now echoes the statement we received.

It appears that Microsoft is planning a new project called Tulalip and could be positioning it as a hybrid search/social networking service.

First reported by Fusible, Tulalip currently sits on the SOCL.com domain, which is owned by Microsoft. You can see the socl.com WHOIS record on DomainTools to confirm.

Tulalip currently only offers a “welcome” message that explains itself this way:

It is fully operational but I have not tested the phono inputs because I do not have a record player. If you would like those inputs tested, please let me know and I will get a record player to test them for you. Although it is fully operational, it does slightly crackle when adjusting volume or pressing the switches. It probably needs a little lubricant on the contacts. Mobile games are just one wing of Rovio's plans for a global entertainment empire.

FORTUNE -- Here's a fun stat: The 300 million players who have downloaded Rovio's Angry Birds games have flung more than 100 billion avians -- more birds than actually exist in the entire world.

Rovio isn't putting all its eggs (the ones those malevolent pigs haven't stolen away) in the gaming basket. It's also launching a self-published book line, with its first title -- an Angry Birds cookbook -- due out later this year.

"We're not working on Angry Birds 2," Vesterbacka said. "We're working on new Angry Birds experiences." He cited Nintendo's Mario Bros. franchise as a role model, where dozens of installments have lured in new players for more than 25 years.

Pocket Gems Passes 40M Downloads After Pair of Hits Tap Zoo, Tap Pet Hotel

Sequoia-backed Pocket Gems said it surpassed 40 million downloads today mainly for its two hits Tap Zoo and Tap Pet Hotel. That’s up from 28 million three months ago.

More enviable though is the company’s consistent ranking atop the highest-grossing charts on iOS. Tap Pet Hotel has stayed within the top 13 grossing apps for the last month, while the company’s original hit Tap Zoo has hovered around third place.

For example, he described a soon-to-be-released role-playing game for the OpenFeint platform that comes from a social network. The RPG uses friend gates where players must invite a certain number of new users before reaching the next level. While effective for a platform like Facebook, this invite mechanism falls flat on iOS or Android because the player is probably inviting players that already play the game instead of brand-new non-gaming users.

To adapt the mechanic to mobile, Fassett says that the developer instead focused on reengaging the existing user base through a player-versus-player interaction that keeps players playing. “Consider it almost like a fight mechanic,” he says. “The character needs to fight friends instead of inviting more friends to overcome the challenge. On mobile, developers have to think a little bit deeper about what a player is going to do when they have to help out another player.”

Facebook Basically Owns Zynga　7/19

Zynga has updated its IPO filing and it's a doozy. In particular, the amendment goes into the details of its relationship with Facebook, which is much deeper than we originally thought. It almost makes Zynga into a Facebook subsidiary.
