WeChat is becoming a platform that Official WeChat Accounts can build sophisticated features for their accounts with APIs — then those accounts will become web apps. Before WeChat opened up a series of APIs one month ago, several selected Official Accounts had built a variety of features for their WeChat accounts for their own needs.

The voice SDKs will be free for mid- and small -sized developers. The previous API package charged 500 yuan annual fee.

The idea of Xiaoneiwai sounds a lot like what Ms. Gong Haiyan, founder and former CEO of online dating service Jiayuan, released last week. We expect more such platforms to emerge in China as having all the students, teachers and parents on a single platform is a huge business. Such a platform in online education will be like where Tencent in online communication that users always stick around and monetizing the huge user base is just a matter of time.

Will Glamour Sales always focus on luxury in the future? I’m not sure – I don’t think so! We might try a site that has different products environments like a real shopping mall with a basement level, first and second floor etc. In this December, we are launching the virtual tree of our website where we will separate some products in terms of presentation and so the accessible and first-tier luxury designer brands will be featured separately as has been requested by both the brands and customers.

Running A Luxury Flash-Sale Site in China: Interview with Glamour Sales CEO Thibault Villet

A seasoned veteran of luxury brand retail in Asia, Thibault Villet held senior positions at both L’Oreal and Coach before launching Glamour Sales in China in 2009. With Glamour Sales now a proven and growing business in China’s super-competitive e-commerce space, Thibault spoke to TechNode about the business and operating at the intersection of fashion, luxury and technology.

Please tell us a bit about the Glamour Sales business model?

Glamour Sales is a flash sales site focusing on luxury products. We follow the European (flash sales) model of selling on consignment rather than the US model where the website operator buys all merchandise up-front. To source merchandise, we only work directly with luxury brands or their official distributors and we don’t buy and re-sell parallel imported goods for two reasons: firstly, because the margins are too low, and secondly, to ensure that through selling authentic products our business had the chance to scale.

Glamour Sales のビジネスモデルについて教えていただけますか?

Glamour Salesはフラッシュセールサイトで、贅沢品にフォーカスしています。委託販売をする欧州モデル(フラッシュセール)を採用しており、ネット事業者が前もって全ての商品を購入する米国モデルではありません。商品を取り寄せるために、当社では直接ラグジュアリーブランド、もしくはその公式販売業者と取引を行っており、中古、並行輸入商品は購入しません。その理由は次の2つです。 第一にマージンが低すぎること、第二に、純正品を販売することで当社ビジネスはスケールするチャンスがあるためです。

Now in China, after four years we work with 780 brands of which 95% internationally sourced brands. In terms of our China sales breakdown, we do 70% of sales with fashion, 20% with beauty and 10% with home décor/lifestyle products. In terms of fashion, we are very pretty balanced between footwear, apparel and bags and accessories and other items meaning jewelry, watches etc.

How do you select the merchandise and what percentage of Glamour Sales merchandise is current versus out-of-season stock?

For all of the first-tier luxury brands, the merchandise is one to two years old, while for accessible luxury brands; we are dealing with products a few months past their season. So for brands like Dolce & Gabbana we are now selling the winter 2012 collection and for a kids brand like Jacadi we are selling the Spring/Summer 2013 collections that only just passed.

We have a team of 20 people in our merchandising department and they are constantly in discussion with brands and the brands propose inventories and then the team selects what we think is most interesting for our members whether it be the style, price, or blend of both. At the end of the day what we care about is selecting the right merchandise for our members, and we also incentivize the merchandise team not only on sales but also on the sell-through.

Online Pet Community Goumin Launches Aichongtuan, a Group-buying App for Pet Supply

Although the concept of group-buying is nothing new in China, most of them are focused on the fields of catering, entertainment, and garments. Goumin, an online pet community, expanded the concept to pet industry by releasing Aichongtuan, a mobile app dedicated to group-purchasing of pet products.

Users can select the kinds of pets or search the products you want on the front page to get quick access of high quality pet products. The app also supports the function of in-app payment.

Goumin was founded in 2006 by Tang Yang, founding member of Xiaonei, now known as Renren. It is a community where people can share pet pictures and tips in raising pets. According to official site of the company, Goumin has 1 million registered users with daily PV of more than 2 million. Goumin has dipped toes in e-commerce sector as early as 2010 by launching a special channel.

Gouminの設立者は2006年に当時のXiaonei、今ではRenrenとして知られている企業を設立したTang Yang氏である。ここでは、ペットの写真やペットを育てる上でのヒントをシェアできる。同社ホームページによると、 Gouminには100万の登録ユーザがいて、日々のPVは200万を超えるという。Gouminはeコマースセクターにも足を踏み入れており、2010年には早くも特別なチャネルをローンチしていた。

“There hasn’t been a way for event managers to do it effectively”, says technical co-founder Nazim Zeeshan.

Eventifier says it has now archived more than 2,000 events around the world since it launched in June last year. It’s managed to bring on some big name clients such as NASA, Twitter, and Pearson in the corporate and professional conference circuit.

At CompareHero, different deals can be sorted according to categories such as cashback, points, air miles, low interest, zero percent balance transfer, and more. Afterwards, the results can be further sorted according to user’s preferences such as rewards, balance transfer, annual fee, and interest rate for credit cards. The site also provides FAQ, glossary, and guides on credit cards for the uninitiated.

CompareHeroでは、キャッシュバック、ポイント、航空マイレージ、低金利、手数料ゼロの送金など、カテゴリーごとに取引をソートできる。その後で、報酬、残高送金、年間手数料、クレジットカード金利など、ユーザの好みでソートが可能である。このサイトではFAQ、用語集、初心者向けのクレジットカード使用ガイドも掲載されている。

Future Plans

The site plans to aggressively develop their platforms across Asia, not just Malaysia. Future plans revolve around comparing many more financial products and developing comparison engines to also become unbiased sources of valuable advice regarding making important financial purchase decisions. Another plan from CompareHero is to execute serious content syndication and marketing escalation strategies to reach out to more Malaysians.

Another Malaysian financial comparison startup is iMoney, which compares home loans, credit cards, personal loans, fixed deposits, car insurance, and personal accident insurance.

Tencent has not announced the interest rate or minimum investment. Baifa boasts an interest rate of eight percent but caps the maximum amount. Yuebao’s interest rate is about five percent. Neither require a minimum investment.

WeChat has already implemented new payment options into the last version of WeChat, such as the ability to bind users’ bank cards so they can make purchases at select retailers, recharge their prepaid mobile plans, participate in the lottery, and even use vending machines. WeChat has already showed off its chops as an e-commerce player earlier this week when Xiaomi sold 150,000 smartphones through the messaging app in under 10 minutes.

The app now doubles as an e-wallet with a major advantage over its competitors – it already has 600 million registered users. This new savings portfolio offering will serve to strengthen its financial foothold. In comparison, Alibaba reported its NFC e-wallet app has 100 million registered users.

WeChat has now evolved from just a chat app to a full-fledged financial services provider, social network, and gaming platform.

Savings and investment portfolios, in addition to payment solutions, e-wallets, loans, and insurance, are all ways China’s web giants plan to revolutionize the country’s consumer finance sector.

Australia’s CoinJar gets $455,000 to build bitcoin wallet and exchange

CoinJar, a startup that launched a bitcoin wallet with 10,000 registered users in Australia, has secured a A$500,000 ($455,000) seed round led by Australian venture capital firm Blackbird Ventures, which put in $228,000.

Angel investors have also participated in the round, and they include entrepreneur Torsten Hoffman, RetailMeNot founders Guy King and Bevan Clark, game developer Rob Murray, and technology investor Chris Hitchen.

CoinJar’s wallet, available for the iPhone, has a couple of unique features. It is a ‘managed wallet’, which means it doesn’t require the downloading of the blockchain to work. The blockchain, which has exceeded 10GB in size, is a public ledger containing a record of all bitcoin transactions in history.

Security-wise, CoinJar is encrypted with SSL and has Two-Factor Authentication.

In conjunction with the wallet, the startup operates CoinJar Filler, a bitcoin exchange. Available only in Australia for now, it charges a two percent flat fee for buying and 1.1 percent for selling. It also has the ‘CoinJar Fair Rate’, a proprietary exchange rate purportedly reflecting the true price of Bitcoin.

This, it claims, enables it to offer bitcoin at prices and fees lower than that of other Australian exchanges like SpendBitcoins, Omnicoins, and Buy Bitcoin Australia. Since launching in May, the exchange has done over $1.82 million in trades.

Lastly, CoinJar also operates a payment gateway that enables merchants to accept payments in bitcoin without worrying about exchange rates and Bitcoin address handling. Online businesses are charged a one percent merchant fee, which is two to four times less than what PayPal charges.

The company, an alumnus of Melbourne startup accelerator AngelCube, is founded by CEO Asher Tan, a former market analyst, and Ryan Zhou, who previously started and sold bitcoin exchange Bitcoinica, which was later shut down after a series of hacking incidents that saw over $400,000 worth of bitcoins siphoned off.

Despite the cryptocurrency being mostly a speculation vehicle for investors, Asher believes that “it is only a matter of time until business and consumers take full advantage of Bitcoin as a solution to digital payments.”

While acknowledging to Tech in Asia that Bitcoin is “still an inefficient market leading to arbitrage opportunities and speculation,” he believes the growth in “exchanges, market makers, and wallets” will lead to more volume and liquidity but decrease margins for speculative behavior.

CoinJar has been doing its part by securing partnerships with goods and service providers to increase merchant adoption of the currency in Australia. As a result, crowdfunding site Pozible and utility vehicle producer Tomcar have begun accepting bitcoin through CoinJar’s payment gateway.
