VL: I don’t think it’s urgent, but i think the public markets in the U.S. want to see continued aggressive growth. Alibaba can continue to do that in China for a while, but will need to make big steps in other markets to keep up with US investors hunger for aggressive year-over-year growth that is common for technology companies. This applies whether Alibaba expands into new verticals, new product lines, or new geographies.

Khailee Ng, venture partner at 500 Startups, also chimed in. He sees Alibaba’s IPO as a boon for the Southeast Asian tech ecosystem as a whole. He tells Tech in Asia:

“Jack Ma has reminded the world that the journey of building a global tech giant isn’t exclusive to Silicon Valley. And this reminder is especially timely as other markets outside of the US and China mature. Will we see multi-billion dollar giants emerge from Southeast Asia in years to come? The wild world of wrist-worn wearables will, with the advent of Apple Watch, hopefully reach a saturation point and start to consolidate. The full potential of wearables is far from being realized, and the current status quo does very little to excite. Fitness bands, in particular, are basically just smartphone-connected rehashes of your mom’s mall-walking pedometer.

A few leaders are emerging, though. The latest contender comes from Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, dubbed the Mi Band. I’ve been wearing the Mi Band over the last few days to find out if it’s more than a glorified step counter. But first, let’s compare the features side-by-side with the Jawbone Up and Fitbit Flex:

While the MiBand hardware looks to be on par with its competitors, the app is less feature-rich, opting instead for a straightforward readout of metrics rather than giving suggestions on how to improve. For the time being, it’s not compatible with any third-party fitness apps like Run Keeper and Map My Fitness. Also, the app is for Android only; no iOS version is available.

The Mi Band’s biggest selling point is obviously price. At just RMB 79 (US$13), it comes in at just a fraction of the cost of the Jawbone’s jaw-dropping US$79.99 and the Fitbit’s fatcat US$99.95 price tags.

Also, Xiaomi smartphone owners get an extra perk: the Mi Band will automatically unlock your phone if you hold them near each other. That’s the only gimmick that other Android phone owners don’t get.

Functionality

Once the Mi Band app is downloaded and installed, it will automatically switch to your phone’s set language, either Chinese or English. Pairing the Mi Band to your phone via Bluetooth is quick and painless, requiring just a few quick taps to set up. Enter a few personal stats like age, height, and weight, and you’re on your way. No need to take your phone with you on a walk or run; the app will automatically sync as soon as you’re back in Bluetooth range.

You can set a daily goal for how many steps you aim to take, which by default is set at 8,000. Depending on your progress, making a gesture as if you’re looking at a wristwatch will prompt the Mi Band to light up in your preferred color: one light for one-third, two lights for two-thirds, three lights for goal completed. The lights can be difficult to see in direct sunlight.

Wakeup alarms in the app unfortunately don’t sync with any other alarm apps you might have installed. The alarm gently vibrates three times and then turns off. There’s no snooze or option to make it keep vibrating until you give some sort of input, like a tap or other gesture. If it doesn’t wake you right away, then you’d better have a backup alarm ready.

The Mi Band can also be set to vibrate after a missed call, but no other notifications from apps or SMS are available. This was a bit of a disappointment, and seems like an obvious use case that should have been included. I found that by adjusting the missed call alert settings so that it buzzes just three seconds after an incoming call, it effectively lets me know when someone is calling me immediately rather than after I’ve actually missed it.

I expect the stingy use of vibration and lights was designed to preserve battery. It’s apparently worked, as the Mi Band boasts an impressive 30-day battery life. That’s a far cry from the Fitbit’s four-day charge and the Jawbone’s 10. When it is running low, a few minutes on the charger is all you need for several more days of power. That means less stress about whether or not it’s about to die, and more time spent actually wearing the device and collecting useful data.

If you can get it to stay connected, anyway. This one major issue spoiled an otherwise satisfactory experience. My phone’s connection to the Mi Band on several occasions randomly ran into connectivity problems with Bluetooth. The app would say the Mi Band is disconnected, and no amount of refreshes would make it reconnect despite both my phone and the Mi Band having sufficient power. A combination of waiting until it somehow sorted itself out, un-pairing and re-pairing the devices, and switching my phone’s Bluetooth on and off eventually fixed the problem, but much of the data from the day had gone missing.

Jack Ma set to cash-out up to $867 million in tomorrow’s Alibaba IPO

When Alibaba hits the US markets tomorrow, the ecommerce titan’s diminutive founder, Jack Ma, is set for a huge windfall. Ma has previously indicated that he’ll cash-out 12.75 million shares during the listing. Because Alibaba raised its share price range earlier this week, it means Ma will make even more than anticipated. So if Alibaba debuts at the top of its range, which is $68 per share, then Ma will pocket US$867 million.

Of course, the company chairman – and former CEO – holds a lot more shares. In total Ma has an approximate six percent stake in Alibaba, which he founded in 1999. Though he’ll hold onto those shares, they’ll be effectively worth about US$10 billion, presuming that Alibaba is worth about US$165 billion right after it floats.

That wealth, notes Forbes, excludes Ma’s ownership of other firms. Forbes adds that Ma has set some shares aside for charity, but it’s not clear how many.

Xiaomi Invests US$25M in Andon’s iHealth for 20% Stake

Andon (SZ:002432), or Jiuan in Chinese, the Chinese healthcare electronics manufacturer, announced to spin off the division for iHeath, the healthcare appcessory brand, and introduce US$25 million financing from Xiaomi, the Chinese smart device maker and software developer.

The spin-off is named iHealth Inc., according to the Andon announcement, and Xiaomi will have a 20% stake in it. One of Xiaomi’s board directors will join iHealth Inc.’s board of directors.

Alibaba shares priced at US$68, making it the largest US IPO

The Chinese e-commerce giant is looking at an Initial Public Offering of US$21.8 billion, which could even rise to US$25 billion

Alibaba, the mega Chinese e-commerce player, priced its shares on Thursday at US$68 for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) opening on Friday. This is at the higher end of the company’s expected range of US$66-US$68.

With this, the company is set to raise US$21.8 billion — making it the largest IPO in the United States. The amount can even go up to US$25 billion if underwriters choose to use an option to buy more shares at the IPO price, according to various industry reports.

The IPO would give Alibaba a market valuation of US$167.6 billion, surpassing American corporate icons from Walt Disney to Boeing. The offering also vaults it atop US e-commerce rivals such as Amazon and eBay, reports Reuters.

This is in sync with analyst predictions in the month of May, which estimated Alibaba IPO valuation to be in the range of US$136 billion and US$245 billion.

In fact, Bloomberg was right on the money when it valued Alibaba at US$168 billion in April this year, based on the average estimate of 12 analysts it surveyed.

Alibaba’s largest stockholder, SoftBank, will not be selling in the IPO. But its second largest shareholder, Yahoo will be.

Based on the amount raised so far, Alibaba’s IPO is the third-largest ever behind Agricultural Bank of China’s record US$22.1 billion listing in 2010 and ICBC’s US$22 billion flotation in 2006, states Reuters.
