6. PLDT’s Rocket Internet stake

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), one of the leading telecom operators in the Philippines, shelled out in August US$445 million for a 10 percent stake in Berlin-based Rocket Internet. The transaction marked the start of a strategic partnership between the two to “jointly develop mobile and online payment technologies and services” for the “unbanked, uncarded, and unconnected” population in emerging markets.

Free internet, anyone? In September, PLDT provided free internet access to prepaid subscribers of its mobile brands Smart, Talk ’N Text, and Sun Cellular. The service was announced in a press conference by no less than PLDT chairman Manuel Pangilinan, who disclosed on his Twitter account days prior that they would be making a “very important” statement. Pangilinan said the free internet for prepaid subscribers for a period of two months was meant to “stimulate internet habit.” Prepaid subscribers account for about 90 percent of the PLDT group’s mobile subscribers.

Competition in the Philippine ecommerce space grew tighter after two retail giants SM and SSI Group, a member of the Rustan’s group of companies, launched their own online platforms in a bid to capture the growing sector of internet shoppers. SM’s online store offers men’s, women’s, and children’s accessories, apparel, bags and shoes, among others.

3. OLX’s and Ayosdito’s marriage

In November, Southeast Asia’s ecommerce scene was rocked when classifieds giants Naspers, Schibsted Media Group, Telenor Group, and Singapore Press Holdings put an end to their rivalry, and decided to join forces. Four countries were affected by this change: Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. In the Philippines, the deal translated into the merging of brands OLX (formerly Sulit.com.ph) and Ayosdito. The two brands were the biggest competing classifieds in the country, employing various channels like billboard, vehicle, and TV ads to lure customers. As a result of the merger, Ayosdito will close and its users will be redirected to OLX starting January 2015.

Xurpas’ debut was much awaited, thanks to the company’s inspiring growth story. It was the first time the company raised funds ever after bootstrapping all the way to become one of the largest in its category in terms of revenue. Xurpas plans to use the IPO proceeds for regional expansion.

Daum Kakao to launch US$90M investment arm

The company intends to use this money to invest in startups to reduce its dependence on its most profitable service, messaging app Kakao Talk

South Korea’s Daum Kakao, one of the nation’s largest internet companies and owner of South Korea’s most popular messaging app, Kakao Talk has announced the formation of an investment arm called the K Venture Group. Funded by a 100 billion Won (US$90 million) war chest, K Venture Group intends to use this money to invest in startups both in Korea and in overseas markets.

Yonhap News Agency in a report quoted Daum Kakao as saying that “K Venture Group will find new sources of growth for Daum Kakao, and seek active investment and acquisition both at home and abroad, bolstering its global competitiveness in the mobile platform market.”

The objective here is probably to reduce Daum Kakao’s dependence on Kakao Talk as a source of revenue. The messaging app is failing to gain significant traction outside its home market.

The report went on to add that the company wanted to “find new business opportunities in line with its push to lessen its dependency on the conventional free messenger service for growth.”

The trend of messaging apps dabbling into areas beyond just the core messaging service seems to be the flavour of the moment, as Kakao Talk’s Japanese rival, LINE, announced diversification to offer e-commerce facilities like food delivery and taxi hailing. Kakao Talk too is rumoured to be launching the services in early 2015, In November of this year, Kakao Talk also launched BankWalletKakao, a service that allows users to transfer small sums of cash.

Now, SingPost says the archipelago’s internet user base is slated to have a 20 percent year-on-year growth until 2016, which will lead to 102.8 million Indonesians online by then. Indonesians use social media to sell stuff

SingPost says that between January and March 2014, Twitter users in Jakarta posted 2.4 percent of the global total of 10.6 billion tweets during that time period, maintaining the city’s reign as the Twitter capital of the world. However, the nation’s most popular social media channel continues to be Facebook, with 69 million active users. As of September, Indonesia has 30 million Line users. Remarkably, nearly 27 percent of all the country’s ecommerce transactions occurred via social media in 2014.

Who is the Indonesian shopper?

Last year, Indonesia had 4.6 million online shoppers. This year, it has 5.9 million. By 2016, SingPost estimates the country will have 8.7 million local shoppers on the internet. 20 percent of Indonesian online shoppers prefer conventional shopping sites like Lazada or Zalora, while 26.4 percent prefer social media like Facebook or Instagram. 26.6 percent prefer online forums or classified sites like Kaskus or OLX, and surprisingly, the highest percentage of online shoppers in Indonesia would rather buy from messaging apps like Blackberry Messenger or Line.

Indonesians are risk-averse and late adopters of new products and technology, according to McKinsey and Co. Their preference for channels like forums and social networking sites, which allow for interaction with sellers and other customers, is apparently so that they can ask questions and receive recommendations from a real human before committing to a purchase.

While Indonesians shop across multiple categories, the most popular one is by far clothing and apparel, with 61.7 percent of the nation’s online shoppers making a purchase in that category last year. Females reign supreme in the archipelago’s ecommerce space, with women having higher purchase rates, and the highest spending amount on clothing, mobile devices, travel items, laptops, and accessories.

Decentralized consumption

Last year, of Indonesia’s US$363.42 billion spent in the retail sector, only US$1.8 billion was online. This year, of the nation’s US$411.29 billion in retail spending, Indonesia saw an uptick to US$2.6 billion spent in ecommerce. By 2016, SingPost projects Indonesians will spend US$543.07 billion on retail and US$4.49 billion on ecommerce – still less than one percent of the total.
