In Neal Stephenson’s book, “Snow Crash,” the author imagined a wide, rich, social digital world in which people can immerse themselves. The book became the inspiration for Second Life and many other virtual worlds.

In some persistent, online worlds, people move around as they would in real life, by walking or traveling in some sort of vehicle. In others, they can transport themselves instantly from place to place. But unlike “sharded” worlds, where users log in to discrete versions of the same experience, in persistent worlds there is only one “instance,” as it is called — only one universe in which all users coexist.

Rubin said his preference would be to “warp” between spaces. He continued:

“It’s not clear that the science fiction world of metaverses is going to materialize. Because if you ask me [if I want] to walk to the next session [at SXSW], I’d say I’d rather warp if I could….And I would imagine that the way that this manifests for users is not getting on a motorcycle and going at 10,000 miles an hour or whatever it was they said they were doing at the end of ‘Snow Crash,’ or flying a spaceship across space. Though if the purpose of the metaverse, like Elite: Dangerous, is space trucking, then it makes sense.”

Facebook reports that governments in India and Turkey are cracking down on social networking

In a report that showed overall government data requests flat, Facebook said Turkey and India have dramatically increased their requests to either block certain content or to gain access to users’ accounts.

In the social media company’s latest Global Government Requests Report, Facebook received 35,051 requests for user account data in the last six months of 2014, up from 34,946 in the first half. Facebook also said the amount of content it restricted or blocked as a result of violations of local laws increased to 9,707 pieces of content, up from 8,774 over the first half of 2014.

Of those 35,051 requests for user account data, Facebook said India made 5,473, up from 4,559 in the first half of 2014.

Facebook also blocked 5,832 pieces of content in India, up from 4,960 over the first six months of 2014. That’s not quite half of all content blocked by Facebook.

“We restricted access in India to content reported primarily by law enforcement agencies and the India Computer Emergency Response Team within the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology including anti-religious content and hate speech that could cause unrest and disharmony,” Facebook said.

Turkey only submitted 165 requests for user account information in the second half of 2014. But the content blocked in Turkey grew from 1,893 in the first half of 2014 to 3,624.

“We restricted access to items primarily reported by the Turkish courts (and Access Providers Union) and Telecommunications Authority under local law 5651, which covers a range of offenses including defamation of Ataturk, personal rights violations, and personal privacy,” Facebook said.

In the United States, Facebook reported a drop in requests for user account data from 15,433 in the first half of 2014 to 14,274. However, in general, while Facebook says it resists such requests from governments, it’s still turning over the requested information to authorities in the U.S. about 80 percent of the time.

“We will continue to scrutinize each government request and push back when we find deficiencies. We will also continue to push governments around the world to reform their surveillance practices in a way that maintains the safety and security of their people while ensuring their rights and freedoms are protected,” Monika Bickert, Facebook’s head of global policy management wrote in a blog post.

Facebook Messenger for Android, iOS, and desktop now lets you send and receive money for free in the U.S.

As many believed was inevitable, Facebook has entered the personal payments space. The company today announced Facebook Messenger will now let you send and receive money.

The feature is rolling out “in the coming months” on Android, iOS, and the desktop website. Facebook is only making it available to U.S. users for now.

Facebook says payments in Messenger is “a more convenient and secure way to send or receive money between friends.” The process to send money is as follows: message a friend, tap the $ icon, enter the amount you want to send, and tap Pay in the top right.

Receiving money is of course much simpler: Open the conversation from your friend and tap Add Card in the message. If it is your first time sending or receiving money, you’ll have to add a Visa or MasterCard debit card issued by a U.S. bank to your account.

Once that is done, you can create a PIN that will be required the next time you send money. For those who want to take extra precautions, add more layers of authentication to your Facebook account and/or enable Touch ID if you have an iOS device.

Incorporating security best practices into our payments business has always been a top priority. We use secure systems that encrypt the connection between you and Facebook as well as your card information when you ask us to store it for you. We use layers of software and hardware protection that meet the highest industry standards. These payment systems are kept in a secured environment that is separate from other parts of the Facebook network and that receive additional monitoring and control. A team of anti-fraud specialists monitor for suspicious purchase activity to help keep accounts safe.

Facebook claims the money you send is transferred “right away,” but the company warns you should expect delays: “It may take one to three business days to make the money available to you depending on your bank, just as it does with other deposits.” In other words, this payment solution isn’t unique other than the fact that it’s on Facebook.

Rumors of a Facebook payment system have been circulating for years. Speculation significantly skyrocketed when the company hired PayPal president David Marcus to focus on its messaging business.

Facebook is no stranger to managing money. The company has been a payments processor for game players and advertisers since 2007. The company noted in its announcement today that it processes more than 1 million transactions on its site every day.

With that system now handling all the payments processed on Facebook Messenger, we would expect that figure to balloon. The big question is whether Facebook users will trust the service enough to handle their monetary transfers between friends and not just payments to Facebook.

5. Don’t lose the edge in your age

As a young CEO managing a company with older colleagues or working to convince 50-, 60-, or even 80-year-old investors to trust you with their money, you will work to put on as much of an air of mature professionalism as possible. And you should. But it’s equally important not to lose the ability to act your own age, since it’s precisely your age that gives you a crucial edge as a CEO. In many cases, you are the target market for the product, vision, or service you are trying to sell, giving you a uniquely accurate and intimate understanding of the needs of your target audience.

You are also more apt to take risks and bypass conventional ways of doing things to cut through to a more efficient and innovative way. That perspective is what will make you stand out from other managers with more experience than you have, and it would be counter-productive to crush that element of your unique value.

30 years of .com domains

March 15, 1985, might not be a date etched in your memory (if, indeed, you were even alive), but that was when the first .com (“dot com”) domain name was born — 30 years ago this weekend, as it happens.

A computer manufacturer called Symbolics registered Symbolics.com at a time when it quite literally had the choice of any word or name on the planet to procure for its domain. But given the company’s name, well, Symbolics.com made the most sense.

Today, that name is still registered and active, making it officially the oldest .com on the Internet, though it was bought by a small investment group called XF.com in 2009, and the portal now offers “unique and interesting facts pertaining to business and Internet history,” according to the site’s About us page.

While “dot com” eventually became synonymous with the Internet, lending its name to a bubble that ultimately crushed the hopes and dreams of many in Silicon Valley and beyond, in the early days, when the World Wide Web was a mere twinkle in Tim Berners-Lee‘s eye, the dot-com domain took a while to take off.

By 1987, only 100 domains had been registered, a process that was at that time administered by the U.S. Department of Defense. Of that first batch, however, many were procured by well-known brands today — there was Xerox.com (January 9, 1986), HP.com (March 3, 1986), IBM.com (March 19, 1986), Intel.com (March 25, 1986), Adobe.com (November 17, 1986), and Apple.com (February 19, 1987).

In 2000, Verisign acquired Network Solutions, a company that had taken on the role of .com operator (among other domains), at which point there were more than 20 million .com domains registered. Verisign remains the official .com operating body, and will retain authority over it until at least 2018.

Today, in 2015, a .com domain is registered every second, and at the last count there was almost 117 million .com domains registered, up from 91 million five years ago.

Rocket Internet confirms Lamido will merge with Lazada

Earlier today, news broke that Rocket Internet will soon close the doors to its consumer-to-consumer marketplace Lamido, which is currently active in several Southeast Asian countries. The sources in the article were unnamed, but Tech in Asia has confirmed with Lazada Group CEO Maximilian Bittner that Lamido will merge with Rocket’s larger ecommerce entity Lazada. He says:
