That is the ticklish pickle that "Adult World"'s Amy (Emma Roberts, whose grating cutesy-klutziness makes her come off more like a neurotic middle-schooler than a recent college grad) finds herself in, once she steps forth from Syracuse University and finds that few potential employers are impressed by her ambitions as a bard. Her understanding parents want to support her artistic pursuits, but not when it comes to providing free room and board as well as funding the postage cost for all her rejected literary mag and writing contest submissions.

While most of the broadcast and cable networks have gone into a holding pattern as NBC dominates television headlines with their broadcast of the Sochi Winter Olympics (with the notable exception of AMC's "The Walking Dead," which has become such a juggernaut that no mere sporting event can delay its return), Amazon and Netflix have taken the opportunity to offer some interesting alternatives to downhill skiing. Whereas the second half of February is dense with new and returning shows (we'll hit a lot of them in this space next week, including "About a Boy," "Mind Games," "The Americans," "The Red Road," "Vikings," "Hannibal," and more), it's a little quiet right now in TV land.

After Laurel undergoes the surreal experience of attending her own funeral—where she hears barely a kind word about herself in eulogy—she decides to take over Audrey's life, move into her apartment and assume her work responsibilities. She doesn't know that Audrey's life included a married boyfriend (Ron Livingston in a half-baked subplot) and a slacker tenant in the other half of her duplex (Jake Johnson). Naturally, since Audrey hated the slacker, Laurel hits it off with him instantly.

From this ghoulish premise, LaMarque tries to wrest something light and lovely. The scenes between Kazan and Johnson feature an effortless kind of banter; between this and "Drinking Buddies", Johnson is increasingly revealing himself as an adorably sardonic romantic lead. And Kazan continues to assert her versatility and her intriguing screen presence, a mix of twee hipster and Kewpie-doll silent film star.

The movie continues, showing pamphleteers outside polling places handing out what they call "information on traditional marriage." Directed by Yoruba Richen (who also made "Promised Land," a film about property issues in post-apartheid South Africa, in 2010), "The New Black" is an informative, measured, and never-not-engaging documentary about the emergence of LGBT consciousness in African-American communities across the U.S., and particularly communities with a strong church presence. Noting that African-American religious leaders had a prominent part in the passage of the notorious gay-marriage-banning Proposition 8 in 2008, it chronicles activism while examining age-old attitudes.

Ben Wheatley's historical drama "A Field in England," about a group of men wandering the countryside during the English civil war, is at once too little and too much. In the manner of certain bawdy, bloody works of 1960s and 1970s art cinema, not to mention psychedelic midnight flicks from the same era, it's all over the place and often seems to be trying too hard to accomplish goals it can't quite articulate. It seems to be at least partly about the absurdity of entitled royalty and the ingrained cruelty of the class system.

The characters, mostly deserters who've fled either their military obligations or their servitude to a specific master, fall under the dark spell of O'Neil (Michael Smiley), an avowed necromancer who terrorizes the rest into helping him find a buried stash of gold while they're under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Before watching the premier of "Life Itself" at the Sundance Film Festival, I would not have guessed how much the documentary about my dear Roger would affect me. Steve James' film, adapted from Roger's memoir of the same name, was, in a word, magnificent, and it left me emotionally drained.


The experience was bittersweet, mostly because Roger wasn't there to share it with me. Still, I found great joy in a movie that showed a side of him the public rarely sees: his life as a family man and loving grandfather.

One scene that made me tear up was my granddaughter Raven talking about how much Roger taught her about movies, books and life. He was such an important part of his grandchildren's lives, and the movie was a painful reminder to me that he is no longer here for them.
As I reflect on my week at Sundance, I am happy that I waited to see the completed film with the Sundance audience and gratified that my son, Jay, daughter, Sonia, and Raven were at my side. My family is a source of strength to me, and they too are still mourning Roger's death, so the experience was a sort of catharsis for us.

More specifically, "Big Bad Wolves" plays like an extended tribute to the torture scene in "Reservoir Dogs," a description that alone should tell readers whether they'll find it appealing or not. The victim, a mild-mannered young schoolteacher who is suspected of killing and beheading a number of little girls, is strapped in a chair, where his toenails are ripped from his feet, his chest scorched with a blowtorch and his neck carved into with a rusty blade. (If this sounds like a fun night at the movies, then by all means, pile the kids into the wagon and go.)

Even the selection of the time and place seem forced. Set in Boston circa 1978, of course Maggie's decision to momentarily leave behind her family is frowned upon. Maggie suggests early on in the film that the number of female breadwinners in that era is next to zero, especially those of color. (Whether that is true or not is a separate matter.)
What amounted to be the most entertaining element of my "Infinitely Polar Bear" screening was not the film itself, but a gentleman who sat directly behind me.

حتى أختيار الوقت والمكان يبدو قسريا. حدث ذلك في بوسطن حوالي عام 1978،لقد أحزن قرار ماغي،بالطبع، بالمغادرة بصور مؤقتة عائلتها.

Christian Bale is in the same boat as Dench and Thompson in the actress category: his previous nods from major groups give him an 86% chance of scoring an Oscar nomination. That is still slightly better than Robert Redford, who surprisingly did not get a Screen Actors' Guild nod. He did win the top honor from the New York Film Critics Circle, though; their choice of best actor has not failed to grab an Academy Award nomination since Paul Giamatti won best actor from the NYFCC winner for "Sideways" in 2004 but didn't get an Oscar nod for his lead performance, a conspicuous snub.
