"Unlike North America and Europe, the brokerage industry in Hong Kong has been stagnant for the last decade with no innovation. Our competitors largely run the same technology they did a decade ago and nobody has evolved the online user experience. All of the products we saw were static rather than dynamic and built around a customer’s unique needs… Hong Kong is currently the seventh-largest stock exchange in the world and boasts over two million individual investors."

It’s an interesting shift. While there are still a lot of Asians dreaming to be in Silicon Valley, it is apparent that there are more and more foreigners entering the Asian markets, expanding/building their startups here. This continent (just think of China, India, Indonesia) has more potential after all. So is it tough doing business as a foreigner? Mikaal, who is an American, says no. In fact, he feels that bringing in the US mindset to Asia – or Hong Kong, to be specific – is an advantage:

The future looks fun but challenging for 8 Securities. After launching in Hong Kong, Mathias and Mikaal plan to bring their product to Japan, India, China, and the US. 8 Securities will also have an API to encourage developers to build apps on top of its platform. Plus, it will also set up a fund to help developers get started.

Renren Launches a Social Travel Platform and App, Wants to Take a Trip

China’s biggest Facebook-like social network, Renren (NYSE:RENN), has launched a good-looking social travel app and site for its users. Called Fengche – meaning ‘windmill’ – it allows users to make a sort of photographic diary of their travels, which friends can then check out and comment upon.

中国版Facebookのソーシャルネットワーク大手のRenren (人人、NYSE:RENN)は、見た目もきれいなソーシャルトラベルアプリとそのサイトをユーザー向けにローンチした。Fengcheという風車の意味を持つそのアプリを使うと、ユーザーが旅行したときの写真日記のようなものを作ることができ、友達はそれを見てコメントを残せるのである。

Fengche comes with apps for Android and iPhone, where you can create your travel journal whilst still on the move – as indicated by the prominence of the central, green ‘camera’ button (pictured below). A look at the Fengche.com website reveals that individual trips created by users are then presented as sets – appearing like a cross between Flickr and Pinterest – and that its main purpose is for browsing. It seems that most of the creation happens in the apps.

Renren’s COO, Liu Jian, told Chinese media that Fengche was a natural expansion of its social media ecosystem, and that the content created by its users would have a far-reaching influence in the travel and tourism market.

RenrenのCOOであるLiu Jian氏が中国メディアに、Fengcheはソーシャルメディア・エコシステムが自然に発展したもので、ユーザーが掲載したコンテンツは旅行とその業界に大きな影響を及ぼすだろうと言っている。

The new social travel platform resembles the travel diary app AoYouJi which launched only very recently, after we previewed it at the end of last year – though AoYouJi focuses more on geo-tagging. Nonetheless, this might be bad news for the startup. Renren’s Fengche also treads on the toes of smaller sites like Weyup, which made a localized version of the Gogobot travel community.

Having been in private beta for a while, Fengche is launching with over 2,500 trips being documented and posted to the site. Interestingly, the Renren ownership is being played down, perhaps to give this new venture a chance to bring in new users to the Facebook-like site at a time when Chinese web users have been more keen on engaging on microblogs like Sina Weibo.

Chinese Ministry of Industry and Commerce Wants to Regulate Group Buy Industry

Group buy sites haven’t been doing super-well in China over the past six months. In fact, what with all the bankruptcy and fraud, it almost seems like it would be easier just to let them die a natural death. But yesterday the Ministry of Industry and Commerce released an opinion suggesting that the group buy industry be regulated.

Japan’s Social Network for Drinking, Sakebii, Finally Launches

ome of you may recall Japanese startup Sakebii from our Startup Arena competition back in February [1]. We received word from its founder Ryo Umezawa, who tells us that their iOS app has just launched this afternoon.

The service connects first-degree drinking buddies, and your Sakebii network is actually a closed one that is limited to 30 people. They don’t aspire to be the next Twitter or Facebook, but rather, when it comes to sharing your drinking plans, it ensures that your drinking plans are shared (push-notified) with only first-degree friends that you trust.

I downloaded the app just now, but it’s probably a little early in the day to test it out properly [2]. But you can sign up by authorizing with your Facebook or Twitter IDs, or register with your email.

Ryo tells us that since Startup Asia last month, they have overhauled Sakebii’s design, removing some functions in order to simplify things. Over the past month, their startup has been primarily focused solely on the product, rather than promotion.

このアプリをダウンロードしたが、使い心地を試してみるのには時期的に少し早いようだ[2]。しかし、ツイッターやFacebookのIDでの認証やメールアドレスを使っての登録をしてみるのもいいかもしれない。

DeNA Recruits Another Mobage China Partner in Sina Weibo

Continuing its recruitment drive of China Mobage partners, Japanese social gaming giant DeNA (TYO:2432) just announced what may very well be its biggest partnership in the country to date. The company has struck an agreement with Sina (NASDAQ:SINA), a social giant in its own right, and the operator of the popular Sina Weibo microblogging platform.

For DeNA, the deal means that Mobage China will be more accessible to Weibo users, who currently number over 300 million. It also means that come this April, Sina will establish a new Mobage website under its domain where users can download gaming apps to their Android phones.

Chinese Wikipedia Hudong to Invest Big into Mobile Effort

Hudong Baike, the Chinese Wikipedia announced today to invest RMB 80 million to ramp up its mobile efforts with revamped WAP site and to-be-launched mobile smartphone clients.

Founded in 2005, the Beijing-based company as of this February claims more than 4.53 million users and over 6.36 million entries. It raised an aggregate of US$ 30 million in its first two rounds of financing from investors including Draper Fisher Jurvetso, and announced raising US$ 15.7 million (RMB 100 million) in last September.

Last April, Hudong Baike launched spinoff program – Xiao Baike (or Baike Junior) to explore the combination of knowledge platform and commercial platform. In the wake of its Series C round in early September of last year, the company vowed to invest RMB 100 million into the service, with - in retrospect – not so juicy results.

New knowledge-sharing services like Zhihu (Quora clone) stole some thunder from the self-claimed largest Chinese online encyclopedia, and I questioned how much tapping into the mobile trend could help with that.
