With its new Commerce App, Indonesian Bhinneka mobile shopping gets easier

The rising number of people going online with their mobile devices has been identified by one of the biggest e-commerce companies in Indonesia Bhinneka.com as their main reason for introducing their Android app last week.

As part of their birthday celebration,‘Commerce App’ was released and has 120 million Indonesian mobile phone users as the captive market.

US$1.1 million was allocated for 2.5 months development, design, equipment, and marketing fund for the several apps developed, which can be downloaded without any charge.

Japanese Explores Start-ups in SEA, Gives Singapore and Malaysia a +1

Yuki Naruse (above) is an adventuresome young man from Japan who set aside one year to travel and meet start-up founders across the world.

I first met him in person in Singapore, where we got to know each other a little. I decided to invite him along with me to Bangalore, India last week. I’m glad he took the bait. India was more colorful with him around, as he was frequently tweeting updates or jotting down memos in his black notebook. His presence in Bangalore kinda made the TechSpark event feel a little more international too — a good mix of Westerners, Japanese, Chinese, and friendly local Indians.

We've just finished the current round of quarterly financials, for the three months ending June 30, so now is a good time to see which of the publicly owned mobile games companies is doing the best.

The clear winner is Capcom Mobile (TYO:9697), which saw sales up 80 percent year-on-year, thanks mainly to the performance of freemium iOS game Smurfs' Village.

Noah Rahman has moderate Cerebral Palsy affecting his communication, cognition and upper and lower body movement. When he turned two, his language, cognitive abilitity and fine motor skills were diagnosed by a developmental specialist as being at least 12 months behind. Then Noah got an iPad.

Four months later, his language and cognition were on par with his age level. His fine motor skills had made significant leaps.

SNApps4Kids taps into a burgeoning trend for people with disabilities. Touch devices — most notably the iPad — are revolutionizing the lives of children, adults and seniors with special needs. Rahman estimates some 40,000 apps have been developed for this demographic.

“Touch has made it exceptionally accessible — everyone has an iPad, everyone has an iPod,” says Michelle Diament, cofounder of Disability Scoop, a source for news relating to developmental disabilities. “If you’re someone with a disability, having something that other people are using makes you feel like part of the in-crowd.”

For people lacking motor skills, touch screens are more intuitive devices. There is no mouse, keyboard or pen intercepting their communication with the screen. Larger platforms, like iPads, are preferred over smaller iOS and Android devices for ease-of-use and, of course, the cool factor.

Here are four ways that touch devices are changing the lives of people with disabilities:

1. As a Communicator

Before the iPad and other similar devices, using touch-to-speak technology was incredibly expensive, costing around $8,000. Now, it only costs $499 for an iPad and $189.99 for a thorough touch-to-speak app like Proloquo2Go.
