There are two types of software companies. This first, like Salesforce.com, innovate, educate, ship fast and often and are committed to openness and making people’s lives simpler. Their software is easy to use, yet powerful, and is sold with passion and supported with excellence.

Nurturant parent morality,in contrast, is characterized by compassion,empathy,and fair distribution of opportunities and responsibilities (like generativity). Given Lakoff's ideas,strict fathers(authoritarians) and nurturant parents(generatives) should take seriously the developmental tasks of marriage and parenting. Both variables share a root concern with tradition and the passing on of values and legacies. Highly authoritarian individuals,like generative individuals,believe that what they do will secure the best outcome for their social group.No doubt,however,the two variables differ in the content,range,and style of what is passed on.

For example, researchers have focused on how generativity relates to parenting, including the socialization of values and the interest in fulfilling intergenerational roles. Although researchers have theorized about generativity in developmental terms, most studies have explored the current correlates of the variable in young adult or early midlife samples. In our article, we focus on the correlates of generativity at midlife and later midlife, thus expanding the range of ages traditionally studied. In this way, we examine the notion that midlife generativity is related to successful aging as adults approach young-old age. Reasons for focusing on aging and authoritarianism are less intuitive.

They concluded that no one pattern of aging is healthier than the others: women with different values and skills follow different paths to aging in a positive way. For the current article, we took a page from Helson and Strivastava and examined aging outcomes in another sample of women. More specifically, how do the important personality variables of generativity and authoritarianism relate to aging outcomes over 10 years of time? The answer will advance psychologists' general understanding of the role of personality in healthy development.

Erikson conceptualized generativity as a developmental variable. In its most basic form, generativity is the human concern for the well-being of future generations in general and one's progeny in particular. Erikson argued that generative efforts are most fully realized at midlife, after individual concerns with identify and intimacy have been negotiated. At midlife, individuals broaden the focus of their gaze to include not only care about their families, but also care about the well-being of all future generations. When formulating hypotheses about generativity, psychologists have drawn heavily from Erikson(1950,1980,1983).

We are not the first psychologists with the goal of identifying individual differences in patterns of aging. Helson and Srivastava(2001), for example, identified three paths of adult development. In a sample of Mills College graduates, they found that women at 60 who scored high on Ryff's(1989) scale of environmental mastery (the conservers) were characterized by high levels of competence, women who scored high on personal growth(the seekers) were characterized by high levels of ego development and wisdom, and women who scored high on both environmental mastery and personal growth (the achievers) were characterized by generativity and competence.
