J’écris avec fièvre, j’écris de toute ma fois des « chants vengeurs » sur cette guerre terrible et sublime, -hélas ! « vengeurs » autant qu’il en est en mon pouvoir. C’est pour moi une nécessité morale. Je suis Rémois, né juste en face de la Cathédrale assassinée, ce qui me donne un peu grâce d’état pour fustiger l’Allemand.
Me ferez-vous le très-grand honneur, chère Madame, en lisant les quelques chants réunis dans ces fascicules de juger si j’ai accompli mon devoir de poète français à l’heure où l’inspiration me poursuit et l’indignation aussi, j’ai cru devoir élever la voix ?

Translation

情熱と我が信心を尽くして、私はこの恐ろしくも崇高な戦争について「復讐歌」を書くのです。そうなのです。私は自分のなしえる形で「復讐」します。これは私にとって心情的に必要なことなのです。私はランス人で、あの破壊された大聖堂のお膝元で生まれましたので、ドイツを叩くというのは国家的恩寵が私に与えられるようなものです。
親愛なるマダム、この冊子に収められた何篇かの詩をお読みになり、霊感と、そしてまた憤慨が私にとりついて離れないこの時にあって、自分が声を上げるべきであると信じたこの時にあって、フランス人の詩人としての義務を私が果たしたかどうかご判断いただけませんでしょうか。もしご判断いただけましたら大変光栄に存じます。
