TOP100 Startups: Picking the TOP10 from Judges’ Choice winners

All the Judges’ Choice award winners from the 14 Qualifiers are headed to Singapore; stand a chance to pitch on stage as a TOP10 Startup

While the TOP100 Startups will exhibit at the prestigious Echelon Asia Summit in June this year and immerse in an exclusive suite of programmes (including curated workshops and luncheons, company features, as well as structured networking sessions with investors), the winners of the Judges’ Choice across the 14 regional qualifiers will also – concurrently – be put through a two-stage process before the TOP10 Startups are announced:

予選で審査員賞を受賞した全14社がシンガポールへ向かう。トップ10スタートアップの1社として、ステージ上でプレゼンテーションするチャンスがある。

スタートアップのトップ100社は今年6月、栄誉あるEchelon Asia Summitに出展し、プログラム（ワークショップ開催や昼食会、会社説明や投資家とのネットワーキングセッションなど）をこなすことなっている。同時に、14の地域別予選での審査員賞受賞者から、2段階の審査を経て、スタートアップのトップ10社が発表されることになる。

1 Pitch to panel: On June 22 from 5.30PM to 10PM, these winners will pitch to judges, comprising investors, design experts, as well as local entrepreneurs. The startups will also receive feedback on how they could improve their respective pitches.
2 Live poll, powered by DoubleDutch: On June 23, there will be a live poll by all the attendees of the Echelon Asia Summit to choose their favourite startups. The scores of the judges and the results of the poll will be used to determine the TOP10 Startups.

On June 24 – the final day of the tech and business conference – the TOP10 Startups will then pitch on stage for a chance to be crowned ‘Asia’s Most Promising Startup’.

Here are the winners of the Judges’ Choice award across the 14 Qualifiers:
1 Australia: Mobile service AirShr, which helps people remember things they hear on the radio while driving.
2 Bangladesh: Bikroy, the largest online marketplace in Bangladesh.
3 Hong Kong: Recruitment screening startup Talkpush, which raised an undisclosed funding round in February.
4 India: SaaS-based in-app chat messaging solution PepperTalk, which enables businesses to improve customer engagement.
5 Indonesia: Reservation booking platform MakanLuar.
6 Japan: WOVN.io, which provides multilingual support for websites and blogs.
7 Kazakhstan: EcoSocket, offering a device and mobile application to solve environmental problems.

Echelon TOP100: MyRealTrip and Flitto win at Korea Qualifier

Platform connecting travellers with local guides, MyRealTrip, bagged the Judges’ Choice award, while Flitto walked away with People’s Choice

Jess Erickson, Director of Community at 500 Startups wrote in a blog post that there are unique opportunities in the world that Korea will be able to see before many other markets, and that Korean entrepreneurs will have the first crack at solving what will likely become global opportunities.

旅行者を地元ガイドとつなぐプラットフォームMyRealTripが審査員賞を受賞、FlittoはPeople's Choice Awardsを受賞。

500 Startupsのコミュニティ部門ディレクターの Jess Erickson氏はブログで、世界中のユニークな市場機会の中には、多くの市場に先駆けて韓国で見えるものがあり、グローバルな市場機会になっていくであろう機会に対して韓国のアントレプレナーが最初に解決するチャンスがある。

The startup ecosystem in Korea is burgeoning and Seoul is poised to become the hub of tech startup activity in Asia in the next three to five years. The government is promoting entrepreneurship and no country in the world has more backing per capita from the government than Korea. According to a Wall Street Journal report, in the next two years, the government will put US$3.7 billion into startups in the form of grants and other initiatives.

韓国におけるスタートアップのエコシステムは急成長しており、次の3～5年間でソウルがアジアのテクノロジー系スタートアップの活動の中心地になる素地ができている。政府は企業を奨励しており、1人あたりの政府支援金は韓国が世界最高である。Wall Street Journalのレポートによれば、政府は、次の2年間に助成金及びその他のイニシアティブの形式で、政府は37億米ドルをスタートアップに投入する予定である。

To tap this emerging market, e27 held its Echelon Top 100 Qualifier in Seoul, to identify the exciting technology startups from Korea. This initiative will give an opportunity to Korean startups to be one of the Top 100 startups exhibiting at Echelon Asia Summit on June 23 – 24, 2015 in Singapore.

このエマージングマーケットの動向を探るため、e27はEchelon トップ100社の予選をソウルで主催し、韓国発のテクノロジースタートアップで勢いのある会社を発掘することにした。このイニシアチブは、韓国のスタートアップ企業にEchelon Asia Summitに出展するトップ100社の1社になるチャンスをもたらすものだ。Echelon Asia Summitは2015年6月23日～6月24日にシンガポールで開催される。

MyRealTrip, a platform connecting travellers with local guides or destination experts, walked away with the Judges’ Choice award and Flitto, a crowd-sourced translation platform providing accurate and low cost translations for voice, text and image through mobile phones took home the People’s Choice Award at the Qualifier.
There were four startups pitching in total including Pi, a smart IoT product that checks freshness and nutrition of food by sensors and delivers the information to a user’s mobile app in real-time, and Swizzle which helps users take clips from online videos and put them together into a fun, interactive system.

Meet the 3 startup graduates of PayPal India incubator

The ventures are DoPartTime, a marketplace for jobs providers and seekers; Fantain, a sports fans analytics firm; and Kobster, a B2B e-com portal

PayPal, the online payments subsidiary of eBay, has announced the graduation of three startups from its Start Tank Incubation Centre in India. The three ventures — DoPartTime, Fantain and Kobster — started their incubation at Start Tank between 2013-14.

そのベンチャー3社とは、仕事を依頼する人と探す人のマーケットプレースDoPartTime、スポーツファンの分析企業Fantain、そしてB2BのeコマースポータルのKobsterだ。

eBay子会社のオンライン決済企業PayPalは、インドのStart Tankインキュベーションセンタからの3社のスタートアップ企業の卒業を発表した。その3社とはDoPartTime、Fantain とKobsterで、Start Tankでのインキュベーションは2013-14に開始した。

DoPartTime
Founded by Mohankumar Swaminathan and Arun David, DoPartTime is an online marketplace to bring together part-time job seekers and providers. The portal facilitates the finding and hiring of flexible and temporary jobs through a technology-led web and mobile platform. The company was selected through the Start Tank Incubation Challenge startup selection event in Chennai.

“This tenure at PayPal has helped us with a myriad of opportunities. The periodic review meetings and regular technology guidance gave us the necessary direction to grow our company. We are aiming to become the country’s hyperlocal job marketplace,” said Swaminathan.

Fantain
Founded by Anand Ramachandran, Aravind Ramachandran and Vivek Venugopalan, Fantain helps sports companies use fans’ data to increase revenue and predictability. Through its ‘Fan Data Management Platform,’ it engages, collects, and analyses the data from various sources and provides actionable insights to customers.
“Sports fan engagement is a niche business, yet a highly potential space in India. PayPal’s fantastic support enabled us to take risks and achieve our targets in a relatively short period of time. We currently have more than one-third market share in our area of focus,” said Ramachandran.

Fantain

Kobster
Founded by Vineet Neeraj, Karthik Ramaiah and Mohan Gayam, Kobster is a web-based, B2B e-commerce player that helps corporate buyers, retailers, SMBs, home offices and hotels to purchase office supplies in bulk at wholesale rates.

Kobster recently raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Splice Advisors, and has seen its revenues grow from INR 40 lakh (US$630,000) to INR 6.5 crore (US$1 million) by April 2015 while at Start Tank. The company aims to become the largest B2B provider in the space by creating an online platform for buyers and wholesale sellers from across the country.

Kobster
Vineet Neeraj氏、Karthik Ramaiah氏、Mohan Gayam氏によって創業。KobsterはウェブベースのB2B eコマース企業で、企業の購買担当者、小売店、SMB（中小企業）、自宅勤務者やホテルが事務用品をバルクで卸売り価格で調達することを支援する。

“When we joined Start Tank, we were a four-member team. We’ve now become a 23-member strong enterprise and expanded our revenues 10-fold. PayPal has been like a fourth co-founder, helping us build our company through their technological expertise and a great professional network including lawyers and chartered accountants,” said Ramaiah.

PayPal India formally launched its startup incubator in association with TiE Chennai in November 2013. The exclusive facility in PayPal’s Chennai technology centre provides an obligation-free environment, as well as technology and business mentorship for select startups to evolve. It has an office area of more than 11,000 square feet with a world-class incubation space, state-of-the-art conference rooms and other amenities. Startups receive technology mentorship and infrastructure support from PayPal, as well as business mentorship from charter members of TiE Chennai.

In electronics and particularly computing, a jumper is a short length of conductor used to close a break in or open, or bypass part of, an electrical circuit. Jumpers are typically used to set up or configure printed circuit boards, such as the motherboards of computers.
Jumper pins (points to be connected by the jumper) are arranged in groups called jumper blocks, each group having at least one pair of contact points. An appropriately sized conductive sleeve called a jumper, or more technically, a jumper shunt, is slipped over the pins to complete the circuit.
they are usually encased in a non-conductive block of plastic for convenience.

When a jumper is placed over two or more jumper pins, an electrical connection is made between them, and the equipment is thus instructed to activate certain settings accordingly. For example, with older PC systems, CPU speed and voltage settings were often made by setting jumpers. Informally, technicians often call setting jumpers "strapping". To adjust the SCSI ID jumpers on a hard drive, for example, is to "strap it up".[citation needed]

Some documentation may refer to setting the jumpers to on, off, closed, or open. When a jumper is on or covering at least two pins it is a closed jumper, when a jumper is off, is covering only one pin, or the pins have no jumper it is an open jumper.

Jumperless designs have the advantage that they are usually fast and easy to set up, often require little technical knowledge, and can be adjusted without having physical access to the circuit board. With PCs, the most common use of jumpers is in setting the operating mode for ATA drives (master, slave, or cable select), though this use is declining with the rise of SATA drives. Jumpers have been used since the beginning of printed circuit boards.

How tech is leading us back to a ‘village’-style life

There has been a lot of discussion about how the acceleration of technology is decimating the middle class and traditional jobs. But there has been very little discussion of an emerging trend where individuals are opting out of these same jobs people fear will disappear.
Driven by a post-scarcity economic model whereby you can live very frugally if you choose to, some workers (mostly college-educated and urban) are opting out of the now traditional work structure and choosing their own path.

テクノロジーは人々のライフスタイルをいかに田舎風に回帰させるか

テクノロジーの進化がいかに中産階級と伝統的な職業を減少させているかという議論は多い。しかし、無くなると恐れられているそういった職業から離れる人達もいるという新たなトレンドに対する議論はほとんどない。
消費経済モデルでは、選べば質素に暮らすこともでき、一部の労働者（ほとんどは都市部の大卒労働者）は伝統的な仕事のしがらみを離れ、自分自身の道を選ぶようになってきている。

As Chelsea Rustrum puts it in her book It’s a Shareable Life, “You can live a life dictated by choice, passion, and freedom — a life where your … experiences are of the highest value.”
They are opting into alternative, passion-based professions that have gained popularity and acceptance, such as craft beer producer or yoga teacher, and that have flexible hours. Twenty years ago, if Bob, the valedictorian, showed up to his high school reunion and said he was starting an artisanal coffee shop and manually roasting his own beans, most of the attendees would have laughed and asked each other, “What the heck happened to Bob?”

Chelsea Rustrum氏が著書It’s a Shareable Lifeで「選択、情熱、そして自由に支配される暮らし ― あなたの体験こそが最も高い価値を持つ暮らしを送ることができるのです。」と書いたように、実際そういう暮らしは可能だ。
彼等は普通とは違う、情熱を追い求める職業を選んでいる。そういった職業は人気が増えつつあり、世間的にも受入れられるようになってきている。例えば、クラフトビールの生産者やヨガのインストラクター、時間的に自由のきく仕事などである。20年前であれば、もし、高校で卒業生代表のスピーチをしたBobが同窓会で職人気質のコーヒーショップを始めて自分で豆を焙煎していると言ったら、みなは笑って「いったいBobはどうしちゃったんだろうね？」と首をかしげたことだろう。
