So it has been revealed that Xiaomi’s revenue is at a whopping $158 million per month. To some of us, that was quite a surprise. So if the $158 million in revenue per month stat is true, it means that Xiaomi is making more than $1.8 billion a year. Any revenue multiple would value Xiaomi at the billion dollars range. Of course some folks might argue that that is unfair and not accurate, which is true. But even at a revenue multiple of 1, Xiaomi is already a billion-dollar company, assuming that the revenue figure revealed is true.

You might be wondering what the hell is Xiaomi all about. It’s a China-based company (started in 2010) that builds Android-based smartphones and an Android-based OS. It’s led by Lei Jun, an influential serial entrepreneur and angel investor in China. To find out more about the product, I have included a video review done by our Beijing editor, Charlie Custer.

Xiaomi now ships more than 500,000 units of its M1 handset each month, and it is popular because of its affordable price (1999 RMB or US$313) and good quality. According to a Sina Tech report, its factory at Nanjing now produces about 25,000 units each day, which barely meets the monthly demand. Before the product is dispatched, the phones will be tested several thousand times. The failure rate is about 1.5 percent, which means about two phones out of every 100 malfunction. It’s quite a good stat but still far from the Six Sigma standard, which is approximately 3.4 defects per million units. But it’s a good start, given that Xiaomi has only been selling hardware for a year. It should get better.

Singapore’s Channel NewsAsia Gets New App, Good for iPhone and iPad

Singapore-based Channel NewsAsia TV station now has a new app that works on both iPhone and iPad. Launched today, the free pan-Asian news app will let people upload ‘citizen journalist’ style user-generated content, view full-screen photo galleries, take part in polls, see the channel’s programme schedules, check local weather, and share the news you’re reading with lots of social media.

シンガポールに拠点を置くTV局 Channel NewsAsia には、iPhone 及び iPad で動く新アプリがある。本日リリースしたばかりのアジア全域の無料ニュースアプリでは、人々が「市民ジャーナリスト」式にユーザ生成コンテンツをアップロードしたり、画面一杯の写真ギャラリーを見たり、世論調査に参加したり、チャンネルの番組表を見たり、各地の天気をチェックしたり、読んでいるニュースを多くのソーシャルメディアと共有したりできる。

The new app replaces the stale-looking old one as well as adding support for the popular iPad. It brings the TV station more in line with the good-looking apps from the likes of CNN and the BBC. Unfortunately, the Android version is still stuck in the digital Dark Ages, and also needs this kind of refresh at some point.

Articles can be downloaded within the new app for offline reading – which is a good feature that not many news apps bother with. But then Channel NewsAsia goes and spoils it all by only allowing these to be viewable for three days. So you’d still be better off using Instagram or Pocket (formerly ReadItLater) for saving items to read at your leisure.

この新アプリは、古くさくなった旧アプリの代替となる上、人気の iPad にも対応している。これにより、TV局は、CNNやBBC 等のかっこいいアプリと足並みをそろえることができた。Android 版はまだデジタルの暗黒時代の中にあるが、ある時点でこの種のリフレッシュが必要になるだろう。

The app was made for Channel NewsAsia by Singapore developers Cyclone Digital. In a press release, its MD, Sarah Doery, said:

We worked closely with Channel NewsAsia to develop an intuitive, dynamic approach for the app, and we’re confident that users will enjoy the richer and more in-depth news experience it offers.

The new, universal Channel NewsAsia app is in the iTunes Store now.

Korea’s Emart Creates QR Codes With Shadows in Midday Sun

QR codes have been around for years now, most commonly used in countries like Japan. I often see QR codes here in restaurants, advertisements, and even on business cards. But I came across one very clever use of QR codes today over on the Communicate Asia blog, as Korean shopping center Emart implemented this in a brilliant sales promotion.

QRコードはここ数年身近なものになり、日本等の国々では最も一般的に使われている。ここでは、QRコードを頻繁にレストランや広告、名刺でも見かける。しかし、今日私は、Communicate Asia のブログでQRコードのとても賢い使い方に出会った。韓国のショッピングセンター Emart は、これを見事な販促キャンペーンに採用した。

The company’s ‘Sunny Sale’ event is promoted using a large QR code displayed outside. As you can see in the video below, the company wanted to attract more customers during its lunch hour down time. To do this, they used the mid-day sun to create a QR code with shadows, which is then scanned by people who see it on the street.

In addition to the promotion itself, it’s also a very fun gimmick that is sure to grab more attention than just a large printed QR code. The code can only be seen during lunch hour, since the pattern of the shadows changes after that time.

この会社の Sunny Sale （晴天セール） イベントは、屋外に表示される大きなQRコードを使って行われている。下記の映像で見られる通り、この会社は、昼食頃の集客が落ちる時間帯にもっと多くの顧客を呼び込みたいと考えていた。これを実現するため、彼らは、昼間の太陽を使って、影でQRコードを生成し、街を歩く人々がそれをスキャンできるようにした。

Pinterest-Based Startup Reinvents Bridal Gown Consignment

Nearly Newlywed is a recent startup that aims to shake up the resale market for designer bridal gowns.

The social media-powered online boutique lists discounted bridal gowns from major designers including Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Rodarte and Carolina Herrera. The dresses are guaranteed “nearly new,” meaning they have only been worn once or twice.

If the bride so chooses, Nearly Newlywed will buy back the dress after the wedding, guaranteeing at least 30% of the sale price. She could also opt to place the dress on consignment with the site – an option open to anyone provided the dress meet’s Nearly Newlywed’s criteria.

Founder Jacqueline Courtney offers personal shopping consultations with soon-to-be brides via Pinterest. Courtney gets to know the brides through their wedding inspiration boards, from which she makes dress recommendations.

“We found that women have always been planning their weddings — gathering inspiration, tearing things out of magazines,” Courtney says. “Pinterest is a great way to collect inspiration. And it’s a fun way to have a dialogue with girls.”

Nearly Newlywed hosts several pages of wedding, bridal and party dresses available at each time. The site allows filtering by size and length. Courtney hopes to bring in 50 to 100 new dresses every six weeks. Courtney says the company will expand into wedding accessory rentals this year.

The buyback is only open for 8 months after the purchase of the dress, not the wedding date. Considering how early some wedding gowns are purchased, this detail is important to keep in mind if you’re planning to take advantage of the guarantee.

Courtney, who got married this past June, told Mashable her own wedding dress hunt was the inspiration for the online boutique.

“The rentals I found weren’t really the right product mix for me — most of them were party dresses or a little bit more informal,” Courtney says. “I didn’t want to keep the gown afterwards. But, I still wanted it before the wedding to accessorize and just for that peace of mind and to alter the dress.”

Courtney eventually found a pre-owned full, strapless Vera Wang Diana gown to wear for the wedding, which she resold.

iamtrend: Taking Social Interest Groups Beyond Language Barriers

I’m a fan of alternative music. But to share that passion, I’m effectively limited in most social media to communicating with those who speak the same language as me. But the Thai startup iamtrend.com wants to connect like-minded folks across cultures and language barriers, giving them a social site where some simple tags and searches enable people to explore the kinds of ideas, photos, and videos that are shared by people with similar interests to yourself.

The iamtrend site is currently available in Thai and English, with more languages to be added by next week. The key to the cross-cultural sharing is, simply, in the preset tags that users can apply to their content, ensuring that when someone in, say, Bangkok applies the ‘alternative music’ tag to a Mogwai video, then I’m likely to stumble across it. Then I get the choice of retweeting or ‘liking’ it. Can you imaging retweeting content on Twitter that’s not in a language you understand? That just generally doesn’t happen. But that barrier is breached on iamtrend.

The site looks like a Pinterest clone at first glance – as founder Tareef Jafferi concedes when talking to us via email – but all that collating and easy searching does indeed make it an interesting community. Tareef explains:

From first inspection we may look like a Pinterest clone. However […] our core concept has always been about building a community of like-minded individuals. We provide a fun and engaging way to find new content and friends while also functioning as a social library – a place where you can store and organize things you love.

To gamify the whole community experience, iamtrend includes leaderboards so you can see who are the best people to follow on certain topics, lists for your own posts, virtual badges to represent your interests, as well as a social dashboard so you can track your own stats on the website.
