Houhou said the system provides big advantages over basic Skype video chats or phone calls. The fact that the robot can follow a resident around often leads to longer calls and interactions. And in many cases, residents may not be capable of using a computer or holding a phone for extended periods.

More importantly, whether its Milo or the telepresence robot, Houhou says the robots create a more enhanced feeling that the person is closer.

“The robot is a presence,” Houhou said. “You are not there, but it feels more like a real person.”

The NCES hasn’t published data for degrees conferred after 2013. Since the first coding boot camps were founded in 2011 and 2012, there’s no clear impact here, but note that computer science degrees had already seen a sharp decline since their peak in 2003.

An analysis of this NCES data by IT World concludes, “despite the red hot market for developers, it doesn’t seem that the rate at which undergrad students are choosing to major in computer science is increasing.” In fact, over roughly the same period of time that computer science degrees dropped, the tech sector experienced remarkable growth.

And while computer science degrees have been losing steam, interest in coding bootcamps has exploded. Course Report’s 2015 Bootcamp Market Size Study estimates that coding bootcamps will train “an estimated 16,056 graduates in 2015, up from 6,740 in 2014.” If their prediction is correct, coding bootcamps will have trained about a third of the number of 2013’s computer science graduates (50,962).* And Course Report estimates a drop to 48,700 computer science grads in 2014.

These market size estimates come from Course Report’s comprehensive survey of bootcamps like Dev Bootcamp and General Assembly. They show approximately 280 percent year-over-year growth for the bootcamp market. Notably, that number doesn’t include online programs like Bloc (my company) or Udacity; so the actual figure could be substantially larger.

Meanwhile, computer science job openings continue to grow at a tremendous rate, and most of the people filling those job openings don’t have a computer science degree. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economics and Statistics Administration wrote in a July 2014 report that “only 35 percent of college-educated computer and math workers have a degree in computer science or math.” (Only about two-thirds of STEM workers have a college degree at all.)

The job outlook for software developers is growing at 22 percent, or “much faster than average,” according to the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. And Robert Half Technology, one of the country’s largest tech staffing firms, says in its 2016 report that “employment offers are fiercely competitive: Above-market pay and other attractive financial incentives are common, and offers may include stock options, flexible work schedules, and other perks.”

Why do founders need lifelines?

The emergence of this new financing round is the result of a couple of phenomena. First is the sheer growth in the number of early stage/seed sector of funds. When Founder Collective started in 2009, there were a couple of institutional seed funds. Today there are hundreds. As a result, there’s a lot of early stage money chasing startups with valuations in the $5-12 million range.

According to a Kyodo report, Toyota is contributing JPY 10 billion (US$82.3 million), SMBC JPY 3.3 billion (US$27.2 million), and Sparx Group the remaining JPY 200 million (US$1.6 million). Sparx Group will act as the fund’s general partner.

A Toyota press release states that target investment areas include artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and “technologies related to the production, supply, and use of hydrogen.” While the firm didn’t directly mention autonomous driving, AI and robotics are core technologies related to self-driving cars.

Toyota pioneered modern hybrid vehicles with the ubiquitous Prius, but the automaker lags behind both domestic and foreign rivals when it comes to fully-electric vehicles. It may also be falling behind in terms of autonomous driving technology.

At this year’s Tokyo Motor Show (which is still underway), Toyota showed off the latest Mirai and a futuristic hydrogen-powered vehicle called the FCV Plus. It’s clear that the company sees hydrogen cells, not batteries, as the next big thing in green automotive – and has even said as much publicly. Toyota claims that current battery technology doesn’t provide enough distance per charge, and that the materials they’re made of limit “energy density” – you can only cram so much power per battery and so many batteries per vehicle.

The firm began testing a semi-autonomous Lexus last month, but says it has no plans to completely replace the driver (it’s calling the technology “Highway Teammate”). Toyota didn’t have much self-driving tech to show off at the motor show.

Nissan this week announced that it would bring semi-autonomous vehicles to market by the end of 2016. It’s currently testing a self-driving version of its all-electric car, the Leaf, on public roads and highways in the greater Tokyo area. US-based Tesla recently updated some of its existing electric vehicles with semi-autonomous capabilities.

The fund – which Toyota hopes to increase in size to JPY 50 billion (US$411 million) by next March, with the inclusion of new investment partners – will likely be used to address the automaker’s slow progress with autonomous driving technology. More importantly for Toyota, it could also further solidify its position as a global market leader for hydrogen power.

According to a report by We Are Social, the current market doesn’t not seem particularly promising for tech startups upon first glance — with only 2.2 million active smartphone users and 3.8 million active Internet users. Still, the growth numbers look promising — with a 414 per cent jump in Internet users since January of last year. The number of smartphone users has also leaped 100 per cent within that time frame.

As for social media users, Cambodia currently has 2.4 million which grew from 600,000 in 2012.

In terms of resources, the Cambodian tech scene has its own tech blog Geeks in Cambodia that covers topics such as mobile, gadgets and social good. Tech incubators such as KOTRA have also shown up on scene, but the projects they support range from IT and software to climate change and green energy. The focus as it seems is mostly on social enterprises instead of tech entrepreneurship.

Rocket Internet is also in Cambodia, having launched e-commerce site Kaymu earlier this year.

Laos, the battery of SEA

Gearing up to be “the battery of Southeast Asia,” Laos has and will be building a number of dams on the lower Mekong river which is the catalyst for interest from foreign investors. These projects, controversial because of its interference with marine life and industries on the river, are a part of the Lao government’s plans to become a major power exporter to Thailand and Vietnam.

Laos’ hydropower potential has attracted some foreign investment, mainly from China who has become the country’s top investor last year by putting in a total of US$5.1 billion.

The small Southeast Asian country of 6.6 million is still wetting its feet in the digital age. According to a We Are Social report, Laos has just 850,000 active Internet users with 680,000 social media users. However, since January 2014 there has been a 20 per cent jump in Internet users and social media users leaped 62 per cent.

While it’s still very early days, there has been some tech activity. Last-minute hotel booking app HotelQuickly expanded to Laos in Oct 2014 and the National University of Laos has launched the Lao IT Business Incubator Center to support tech startups.

Indian car rental booking platform Revv close to raising US$10M: Sources

Founded by ex-McKinsey executives, Revv earlier this year raised seed funding from angel investors including 10 Directors and Partners of McKinsey

Revv, a Delhi-based self-drive car rental booking platform, is close to raising around US$10 million in fresh funding from a group of global VC investors, sources familiar with the development told e27.

The amount and terms for the latest round of funding are expected to be finalised by the end of the month, the sources informed.

When contacted, Revv Co-founders Anupam Agarwal and Karan Jain confirmed that they are in the middle of talks with VCs, but refused to share more details.

“Funding discussions are a normal and ongoing thing for most startups at this stage. We have already grown to a fleet of around 80 cars in the last three months of operations while maintaining very healthy operating and financial metrics. We plan to have 300-plus cars by December 2015, and the fresh round of funding will help us hit the 2,000-car mark by July 2016,” Jain said.

The company plans to invest heavily in developing world-class technology to enhance customer experience and operations, marketing activities and rapidly increasing its fleet size.

As a means of broadening its concept of rented mobility solutions, it is planning to add premium bikes and recreational vehicles to its fleet.

It is also planning to launch an on-demand variant of its doorstep delivery services, whereby the cars can arrive at the customer’s doorstep within 30 minutes of booking.
