Moglue offers interactive ebook publishing tools for iOS and Android

Echelon 2010 alumnus Moglue has just launched a few changes to make it easier for anyone to create and publish interactive ebooks on smartphones and tablets.

For those whom are unfamiliar with Moglue, the platform allows anyone to create and publish their own interactive ebooks for iOS and Android. The New York and Seoul based company was founded at a Startup Weekend back in May, 2010, and its ebook publishing platform now consists of two main components: MoglueBuilder and MoglueViewer. MoglueBuilder has received more than 34,000 downloads from 140 countries since launching its beta in September, 2011.

Groupon China’s New Owner Nets $40 Million in Funding for Daily Deals Expansion

You might recall that in June of this year, Groupon China was merged with larger daily deals rival FTuan into a company called GroupNet. And now GroupNet’s CEO, Lin Ning, has revealed that it has recently netted $40 million in funding. The investment is thought to have been led by Groupon (NASDAQ:GRPN) and Chinese web giant Tencent (HKG:0700), but that’s not confirmed by offiicial channels.

This year’s merger was masterminded by Tencent, which already had an undisclosed stake in Ftuan and was also the official local partner for Groupon in China. As a part of the merger deal, GroupNet also runs Tencent’s own QQ Tuan daily deals site. It’s believed that FTuan – which attracted three major funding rounds already before its amalgamation – still holds the majority of the stake in GroupNet.

In figures for 2012 Q2, Taobao Juhuasuan (run by Alibaba, which is is Tencent’s e-commerce nemesis) is the top deals site in China with 21.5 percent market share, and Meituan is a steady second place.

Naming can be one of the most difficult challenges in the early stages of a startup. But while many people have written about the topic, few have actually codified the process to help entrepreneurs succeed in the endeavor. This guide breaks down naming into individual steps with detailed, practical suggestions that can be applied to almost any industry. It’s based largely on my personal experience naming several tech products as well as the themes I’ve noticed in great startup names. You’ll find numerous examples to bring each concept to life and inspire your creative side — something you’ll need to get to the finish line.

In this first article, I provide a general overview of naming. Specifically, I examine the challenge of naming companies, the importance of creating a good name and pre-naming preparations.

The Challenge of Naming

Naming on the web is difficult because it’s a multiple-step process that’s a mix of art, science and pure perseverance.

ネーミングの挑戦

First, you must create a name that is short (ideally, two syllables and <10 letters), memorable and relevant to your idea. It should be easy to find and spell, project positive connotations to your target audience and cannot conflict with existing trademarks. Unless you’re a linguist, this is not an easy task. Large companies often defer to experts at naming agencies who do this for a living, but you must rely solely on your creativity.

まず、短く（理想的には２音節、10文字以下が望ましい）覚えやすく、自分のアイデアに合うような名前を創らねばならない。そして見つけやすく、つづりやすく、自分がターゲットとする閲覧者にポジティブな意味を投影し、かつ現存する商標に抵触しないような名前である必要がある。言語学者でない限り、それは簡単な作業ではない。大企業は、ネーミングを生業とするネーミング代理店の専門家に従うものだが、あなたは自分の創造性に頼るしかない。

Then, you must find a domain that’s available. This is where things get really tricky. Given that most good .com names for $10 are already taken, it’s likely that you’ll spend at least a few hundred dollars on a good name, or risk forgoing some of the best options. You may also be subject to the availability and interest of a third party who may not be interested in selling the real estate.

If that’s not enough, then you’ll probably be naming your company as you juggle dozens of other responsibilities, such as building and testing your product, recruiting new team members or developing your go-to-market strategy. If you constantly put the process on the back burner, you’ll find that it takes time to get back in the groove and that naming can ultimately become a huge roadblock to other parts of the business.

That doesn’t sound like too much fun, does it?

The Importance of Naming

While the naming process requires a lot of time, patience and focus, doing it well is ultimately worth the effort. That’s because a name has a big impact on your entire business.

The name is first thing that people hear when you tell them about the company. At best, it signals maturity and relevance; at worst, a lack of vision, attention to detail and creativity. Before you can even finish your pitch, people are already making judgments of your company, and bad names can be a real distraction to important conversations.

ネーミングのプロセスの多くの時間、忍耐、焦点が必要とされるのなら、よいネーミングをすれば、結局努力のし甲斐がある。企業名は事業全体に大きな影響を与えるからだ。

企業について語る時、人々が最初に聞くのが企業名だ。最善の場合、企業名は熟成と妥当性を示し、最悪の場合、ビジョン、細やかさ、創造性の欠如を示す。自社の売り込みを終える前に、人々はすでに企業についての判断をしており、悪いネーミングは重要な会話から人々の注意を大きく逸らしてしまうかもしれない。

The name is important for discoverability, whether in Google searches (10% to 50%+ of site traffic, depending on the category), the App Store (especially painful in iOS6) and other text-based discovery channels. If it’s too hard to spell, or too similar to something that already exists, chances are that people won’t find you, and you’ll lose a good chunk of your potential business.

The name is also a conduit to an emotional connection with your users. Good names — like good logos — evoke strong passion for your brand, while bad names elicit distaste and indifference. Using the former can be a competitive advantage for your company, especially when feature sets are roughly the same.

Google 検索（カテゴリーによるがネット上トラフィックの10～50％）やApp Store （特にiOS6は苦痛だ）、他のテキストベースの検索チャンネルでも企業名は会社を検索するのに大切だ。スペルが難しかったり、既存の企業に似すぎた名前であったりすれば人々はその企業を見つけることが出来ない可能性があり、かなりの量の潜在的ビジネスを失ってしまうことになる。

企業名は、企業とユーザーとが感情的につながるパイプでもある。よい名前はよいロゴと同じく自社ブランドに対する強烈な情熱を引き起こす一方、悪い名前は興ざめや無関心を引き出す。よい企業名を使うことは、特に特徴が大体同じである場合、自社にとって競走上優位になる。

Generally speaking, a name is more valuable to a B2C (marketing-driven) company than a B2B (sales-driven) counterpart, so allocate your efforts accordingly. But whatever the case, there are simply no excuses for having a bad name. It represents your company and should always live up to image you want to project — both internally and externally.

一般的に、B2B （販売指向型事業）よりもB2C （市場駆動型事業）の方が企業名がよい重要であるので、事業形態に応じて努力を注入してほしい。だがどのような場合においても、悪い妙名をしたことに対する言い訳は立たない。企業名は自社を代表するものであり、企業内部でも外部に向けても常に自分が投影したいイメージにふさわしいものであるべきだ。

Objectives and Implications of the New Regulatory Initiatives
Since the crisis began, the regulatory reform agenda has been both ambitious and global. Setting aside some specific attempts to alter business models (the Vickers commission report in the United King- dom and the Volcker rule under the Dodd-Frank Act in the United States) at the national level, the global regulatory reform agenda has not been driven

toward directly altering financial sector structures
per se, but rather toward promoting safer behavior 8However, the emphasis in
the reforms on raising the costs of riskier activities means one can expect changes by the private sector to lower overall costs and move to more profitable activities.

Newton Circus’ Silverline could reduce digital divide and pollution with senior-friendly iPhones

Silverline, a new venture by Singapore-based sustainable business incubator Newton Circus, has partnered with SingTel on an initiative to put smartphones into the hands of seniors.

But these are not ordinary smartphones. They are refurbished second hand-devices with senior-friendly apps installed.

Connect, for instance, presents the contact list in a visual format to aid the visually impaired. Well Being provides reminders for taking medicine, drinking water, and doing exercise. These are just some of the apps that are available (website has the full list).

Here’s how Silverline is working with SingTel to distribute the phones:

1. SingTel customers who are renewing their contract and purchasing a new smartphone with SingTel will be offered the option of gifting their old devices to a senior citizen.

2. The customers can opt to give the phone to elderly beneficiaries from Willing Hearts and Lion Befrienders, with the cost borne entirely by Silverline and its partners.

According to Daryl Arnold, CEO of Newton Circus, the company decided to use smartphones in this initiative because they are a blank canvas. It is easy to create apps and experiences optimized for seniors on a smartphone.

The company has brought on a bevy of partners to get the initiative off the ground. In addition to those mentioned, Ogilvy has helped with solution development an marketing, BuUuk is supplying their app development and management expertise, while SPW Enterprise takes care of the smartphone refurbishment and device preparation portion.
