Telkomsel and Google Bring Free Mobile Internet to Indonesia

Yesterday Indonesian telco Telkomsel and Google launched a free mobile internet feature called Free Zone. This new feature allows Telkomsel users to use three of Google’s products – Google search, Gmail, and Google Plus – for free for the next six months. Interestingly, users will also be allowed free access to the first page of third-party websites from their Google searches. But they would incur normal data charges for further browsing on that or any other website.

Telkomsel users who already have a Google account can start using Free Zone by opening telkomsel.com/freezone on their phones. This feature isn’t available for PCs and tablets though.

Indonesia is only the third country to see the rollout of Google’s Free Zone feature. The other two are the Philippines and South Africa.

Google Free Zone is part of Google Indonesia’s effort to grow the country’s internet ecosystem, a goal which Google’s country head of Indonesia mentioned during our Startup Asia Jakarta event. To help achieve that goal, Google Indonesia is also working to achieve its target of bringing 100,000 small businesses online.

Evernote Integrates With Tencent’s ONE Browser, Now in English, Thai, and Indonesian

Earlier this month, Evernote integrated with Tencent’s ONE Browser for mobiles in India. Today, Evernote announced that its service is now available in Thai and Indonesian too. The integration with ONE Browser allows users to clip and save webpages content in their Evernote account. For folks who are interested, you can download the ONE Browser for Android here.

今月初め、Evernoteがインドのモバイル用TencentのONE Browserに統合した。今日、Evernote は同社のサービスが、タイ語、インドネシア語でも利用可能になったと発表した。ONE Browser との統合によりユーザーはウェブページのコンテンツを自分のEvernoteのアカウントにクリップしたり保存したりすることが可能だ。興味のある方はここからAndroid用のONE Browser がダウンロードできる。

Unlike Tencent’s QQ browser, ONE Browser (formerly called Ibibo Browser in India, or as iBrowser elsewhere) compresses mobile data, and claims to be able to reduce users’ data costs by up to 85 percent. It competes with Opera Mini, which is arguably the most widely used mobile browser (also with data compression capabilities) in Indonesia, as well as UC Browser.

With 40 million users worldwide, including 200,000 users in Indonesia, Evernote seems to be placing a great deal of focus on Indonesia, a nation which matches up very well with Tencent’s mobile strategy. The Chinese company recently partnered with media conglomerate PT. Global Mediacom and also stated its ambitions quite clearly at our Startup Asia Jakarta conference in June of this year.

Andy Pan, Tencent’s Director of International Mobile Products, said:

We are rapidly introducing our products in the Asian region and Indonesia is a primary market for us. With the mobile phone subscribers’ base now topping more than 260 million, Indonesia’s mobile phone penetration has tripled in five years.

Evernote seems to be rapidly ramping up partnerships and initiatives across Asia in 2012. In May, it launched Yinxiang Biji, an Evernote service localized for the Chinese market which was then followed up by Alipay integration (to pay for Evernote pro services). In July, we noted that Evernote has 1.1 million users in China. Just recently, we wrote that Moleskin also creatively launched a smart (paper) notebook which enhances the quality of your photos taken with your mobile phone within the Evernote app.

As for the startup itself, FotoRus’ Hua Xue explains that they’ve had some seed funding, but are generating “very little revenue from mobile advertising.” They’re currently contemplating in-app purchases for some extra items – like additional pic-in-pic templates – but have not yet rolled that out. They make other apps too, like Fotoable, which costs $1.99 and is a neat way to better organize your photos than Apple’s own albums app.

The startup can perhaps learn some lessons from the young team behind the Chinese-made Camera360, which has also seen huge global success with its photo and video apps. Indeed, FotoRus has recently added things like cloud backups for your images, so it’s branching out into a broader platform as well.

Staying local but thinking global is what will make Mindtalk succeed

Mindtalk comes from the experience of co-founder, Danny Wirianto, on building Kaskus, Indonesia’s largest online community. Find out how this social channel is staying local but thinking global.

地元に留まって世界を視野に入れることがMindtalk成功の鍵

Mindtalkはインドネシア最大のオンラインコミュニティーKaskusを立ち上げたDanny Wirianto氏の共同設立者としての体験から作られている。このソーシャルチャンネルが地元にいながらいかに世界を視野に入れているか考察してみよう。

Indonesian social channel, Mindtalk recently launched out of beta. The service has since seen an additional 80,000 sign ups to its new public service. Adding to the existing 180,000 from the beta, Mindtalk is steadily growing at about 2000 new daily signups without any marketing activities. As shared by co-founder Danny Wirianto, monthly active users have doubled since the public launch and Mindtalk sees about 30,000 posts daily with 45,000 responds made on these posts.

Talking more to Danny, e27 reveals more about the story behind Mindtalk and the plans the team has for the service.

How did you conceive the idea for Mindtalk and what do you envision Mindtalk to be in the future?

We got the idea of Mindtalk from Blackberry Messenger Groups and mIRC, in early 2011. Robin and I talked about on how people interact with each other. We believe that people socialise in two different ways. One is based on the social graph (who I know) and the other is the interest graph (what i like). However, most new social media sites are focused on the social graph and many interest graph social media are in the old style such as forums, mailing lists, blogs, and groups in applications.

Mindtalkのアイデアはどのように思いつかれましたか。またMindtalkを将来的にどのようにしたいと思われていますか。

私たちはMindtalkのアイデアを2011年初めBlackberry Messenger GroupsとmIRCから思いつきました。Robinと私は人々が互いにどのように交流をはかるかについて話していました。私たちは人々は２つの違ったやり方で人と付き合うと思っています。１つはソーシャルグラフ（何を知っているか）でもう１つは関心のグラフ（何が好きか）です。しかし、ほとんどの新しいソーシャルメディアサイトはソーシャルグラフに焦点を当てており、多くの関心グラフのソーシャルメディアは掲示板、メーリングリスト、ブログ、アプリ内のグループ等の古いスタイルの中にあるのです。

So after scanning the landscape at that time, we saw an opportunity that we can create a tool that helps people to interact based on their interest and can gather their own community without limits and barriers. We put Mindtalk.com in public beta to analyse the engine and to build features. However, Google+ launched their service two weeks after we launched. Two months later, Pinterest gained traction. Four months later, Path also gained momentum. This is a proof of concept that we are thinking on the same wavelength and see the same opportunities.

それで当時の景観を調べた後で、人々が自分の興味に基づいて交流し、制限や障壁なくコミュニティーに集まるのを手助けするようなツールを作成することが出来る機会があると考えたのです。エンジンを分析し諸機能を組み立てるためにパブリックデータの中にMindtalk.com を入れました。しかし私達がローンチした2週間後にGoogle+のサービスがローンチされたのです。2か月後にはPinterestが勢いを増してきました。4か月後にはさらにPathも躍進してきました。これは私達が皆同じ考え方の上に立っており、皆同じ機会を得ているというコンセプトの証です。

Our vision for Mindtalk in the future is to be an interest platform for local communities. This is derived from the idea “stay local, think global”. We are planning to create local presences in different countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, the US, South Africa, India, Brazil and other countries. We will create local domains by using our engine. This way, each time people search for Mindtalk in, for example from Singapore, they will be direct to Mindtalk.sg and will see local content and local people that they can interact with. We also want to encourage local app developers to collaborate with us and be highlighted on the Mindtalk platform.

With so many social sharing sites, what sets Mindtalk apart? Especially from larger social networking sites.

We never intended to replace the existing social media such as Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube and Twitter. Mindtalk is a complement of existing social media. We believe people will use up to five to seven sites to interact and satisfy their curiosity. Mindtalk is an interest meet up space that has features from text to articles, photos to videos and queries to deals compared to other sites that focuses only photo or video. We believe people love to share in a variety of formats. Mindtalk also helps people to create their own communities or crowds instantly, easily.

数多くのソーシャル共有サイトの中でMindtalk apartはどのような点が際立っていると思いますか。特に大規模のソーシャルネットワークサイトと比較して際立っている点を教えてください。

Holiday Rentals boasts 400,000 diverse alternative holiday homes at 15,000 locations worldwide. Wego partners with five travel sites for this new feature: Singapore-based TravelMob, Hong Kong-based TheVillaGuide, Australia-based Stayz.com.au, and US-based sites HomeAway.com and FlipKey.com. This is already the third bit of Wego news this week. Previously, the Wego Indonesia team won the social media-oriented Eye for Travel Awards Asia last week. The travel site also partnered up with Indonesia’s blog advertising network Idblognetwork earlier this month.

Facebook can move the needle with hundreds of 0.1% improvements. A small startup with no revenue and 100 users doesn’t care about 0.1%, nor will they be able to detect it. In a small product with no usage, serial testing is fine: there’s no chance that the business will be built around the existing product, so rapid change is more important than scientific understanding. Statistical significance is the second most important variable in assessing when to A/B test. Making a decision between two options without enough data can undermine the entire point of A/B testing.

Doing statistical significance properly can be difficult, but the 80-20 solution is pretty simple. Just use an online split test calculator, using estimates of statistics to see whether you are likely to attain statistical significance for a single output variable. A big caveat: a little common sense regarding statistical significance can go a long way. If you’ve been running a test for a while and don’t have a clear winner but have some other ideas that might move the needle a lot more, you might be well-served by resolving the test now and trying something new.
