Cosmetic E-commerce Startup, Luxola, Raises $590,000

Singapore-based cosmetic e-commerce startup, Luxola, recently announced that it has raised $590,000 from WaveMaker Labs. The site sells all things cosmetic-related, including products for the face, eyes, and skin.

The startup is quite ambitious by guaranteeing next day delivery in Singapore, and delivery time of about two to three days in other markets. That’s especially impressive when compared to Zalora’s recent delivery mess up. Luxola doesn’t own the products they sell, but rather they partner with cosmetic brands and promote those products online.

This new aspect of WeChat is being pushed by Tencent on mp.weixin.qq.com, where users of the messaging app can login and browse some interesting people or media to follow. It makes the messaging app a lot more like China’s Twitter clones, such as Tencent Weibo and its rival Sina Weibo. Already, a bunch of Chinese celebrities have agreed to join in the fun, as well as popular TV programmes like the dating show Fei Chang Wu Rao. Also, it’s good to see that lots of local tech blogs are trying this social media venture as well.

The take-away: Make sure you’re on the established Taobao (for C2C), or – more apt for brands and larger companies – TMall (B2C) online malls at the very least. Rival platform QQ Buy will soon open up to brands as well. If you’re selling independently from your site, accept payments the way Chinese want to pay, such as Alipay or UnionPay – Chinese don’t use credit cards as much as western consumers.

2. Chinese are online a lot

The new urban Chinese are commuting longer and spending more nights at home than their equivalents in the west; and many of them use that time to go online. The average connected Chinese person spends 2.7 hours a day online, more than anywhere except Japan. Mobiles have recently become the most popular way to go online, and tablet usage is soaring; dominated by iPads with 72.6 percent of the market.

For iPhones, [focus on sharp graphics for the iPhone 4S, as local middle-class consumers tend to prefer the very newest gadgets; and on Android, be aware of which smartphones Chinese people are using most this year. That applies to which mobile web browsers they use too. And then create entertaining content that helps Chinese visitors pass the time and keeps them coming back. Branded smartphone apps are becoming an increasingly popular way to draw Chinese visitors.

3. Chinese express themselves more online

Chinese are some of the loudest and most engaged of all when online. A 2011 Forrester Research survey of 330,000 social media users discovered that 76 percent of Chinese ‘create’ content online, many of them through blogging on services like Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter-Facebook hybrid. Just 24 percent of Amercians create such stuff, and 23 percent of Europeans. Social media has finally given Joe-public [Ed: you mean Zhou-public ] in China a voice and he’s taking full advantage of it.

4. Websites raise awareness and woo Chinese consumers

How do Chinese find out about brands? The web. A recent survey by Ipsos China revealed that 37.6 percent of Chinese consumers regularly increase their brand awareness through websites. That’s more than any other channel. And when they come to shopping, 47.5 percent of consumers stated that websites increased their purchase intent; 50 percent more than ads in the newspaper, TV, radio, those ubiquitous LED screens, and every other channel. Ensure your SEO works very well on Baidu, rather than Google.

5. Chinese trust what they read online

With a widespread lack of trust in state-controlled TV, newspapers, and radio, Chinese are more likely to believe things they read on social media such as Sina Weibo. Since launching three years ago, Weibo now has over 325 million registered users, many of whom aren’t shy to share their thoughts. The transparent nature of Weibo means 95 percent of Chinese trust a brand more if they’ve seen it on Weibo, communicating with them very directly. 55 percent have contributed to a conversation about a foreign brand.

GoMyWay lets you save money by finding people to share a taxi with

Traveling on a taxi is expensive in Singapore: A trip from a housing estate to the Central Business District could easily set you back S$20 or more.

A new mobile app called GoMyWay can make it cheaper, and you could even make some new friends in the process. Available on the iPhone now before its official launch this week, the app lets you search for riders in the vicinity and contact them to arrange for a shared taxi ride together.

You can either key in your destination, and the app will generate a list of people near you that are going to roughly the same place, or you can post a trip and hope that others will join you.

In order to chat with a potential travel companion, you’ll need to purchase credits through the app. Each chat session costs between 11 and 20 cents. The chat interface actually protects the user by removing the need to share contact information, preserving the user’s privacy.

There are other safety features that are baked into the app too: Females have the option of filtering riders by gender, and riders can receive a thumbs up or thumbs down from fellow travelers.

GoMyWay is only available in Singapore for now, although the team has plans to expand internationally soon. The app will also in the near future add the ability to plan future shared trips.

Interestingly, it claims to be the first taxi-sharing app in Singapore. That is not true. Another app called ShareTransport.sg has been in existence for quite some time, and in addition to sharing taxi rides, it allows users to carpool too.

Making claims about being ‘first’ is something that no company should do flippantly.

Like many Asian startups, GoMyWay is essentially a clone of Western companies. In New York, there’s Fare/Share (which appears to have died) and CabCorner.com, which acquired another similar company called Hitchsters. It is actually available in Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, and Beijing too, providing GoMyWay some competition.

There’s nothing wrong with cloning other startups really; Western startups have great ideas but they often don’t expand to Asia or don’t have much traction in the region. Apps like GoMyWay are certainly good news to us consumers, provided they execute well and give us a pleasant user experience.

Making a Play for Game Developers, Guohe Launches New Mobile Gaming Ad Platform

One of China’s leading mobile advertising companies, Guohe Ads, has a new product out this week that’s aimed squarely at enabling the cross-promotion of mobile games. Called Mix, it’s the startup’s big play for the gaming ads market in the country. Speaking to TiA from Guohe’s Beijing office, CEO and co-founder Neo Zhang explains that the “gaming category is growing very fast in China” and that it wanted a product especially for such cross-promotions because “developers care about their games so much” – and so Guohe felt it deserved a dedicated service.

Guohe Mix was launched at the start of this week after a month in beta testing. Devoted to iOS game developers (for now), it already has some major local studios making use of it, such as Red Atoms, makers of the cartoony Three Kingdoms-era game you see being promo’d in the above image. What this new promotional platform does is display a large, almost fullscreen frame which is standardized in size. It’s large and bright, and Neo claims that it can seriously convert a lot of users.

For gaming studios who decide to utilize Guohe Mix, Neo says that the aim is to make it more than just a product. Refering to Guohe’s base package, the Ad Manager, he says: “We’ve built a community on top of Ad Manager […] for developers to cross-promote, exchange users.” And so the idea is that the gaming-only platform is more tuned-in than its rivals which cross-promote many kinds of apps.
