If you make the assignment and say nothing more than what is contained in the first sentence of this paragraph, odds are that the report will be too brief or too long. Quite possibly, the employee may research a number of things that you didn't necessarily want included, or he may leave out entire areas that you felt were important. After you see the report, you instruct him to go back and rework the material and possibly do additional work; you aren't happy with the initial efforts. The employee can easily become frustrated, feeling he has failed you.
