However, what is formerly recognizable as New Media art today is met with an abundance of different understandings and definitions and thus Manovich’s principles lose some, if not all, of their traction in cooperating with the expanding term. In an online article published this year focused on such concerns, artist Brian Khek nicely summarizes the amalgamated term as it exists today,

しかし、以前はニューメディアとして認識できたアートは、現在はおびただしい量の異なる解釈や定義にさらされ、それにともなって Manovich の原則も、全体とまではいかなくともいくらかその用語を広める牽引力が損なわれている。今年発表されたオンラインの論説はそういった懸念を掲げており、アーティストである Brian Khek が現在混沌とした状態で存在する用語についてうまくまとめている言葉があるので引用したい。
