山中諏訪神社の祭神。海や水を支配する海神の娘であり、孫は神武天皇である。そのことから子孫繁栄・安産・縁結びの神様として広く知られている。浦島太郎の物語の竜宮城の乙姫様のモデルにもなったとされる。お産をするときに八尋和邇（ワニ・もしくはサメ）になるといわれる。
５日の夜に神輿がご神木を３周するときに使用する歌。主に氏子が唱える。
