In New York City, Microsoft paraded its patriotic colours. A gospel choir sang America the Beautiful, before Gates, flanked by NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, took the stage and pledged his support for the global fight against terrorism and even seemed to suggest that the advent of Microsoft's new OS would help revive the flagging IT industry. Gates was not only making a transition out of Microsoft it seemed, but in a more personal way was transforming from the awkward, sometimes inarticulate computer nerd to become an accomplished showman in his own right.
