Gates regarded 'writing code' - as computer programming is known - as a higher calling. Employees at Microsoft were divided into two classes: product development groups - which include the top programmers; and everyone else.

The product groups received the lion's share of the stock options; their programmers' private offices at the Microsoft campus at Redmond were defended most vigorously whenever there was a shortage of office space. (In 1995, the squeeze became so intense that smaller product groups were moved into an annex about a mile away from the main campus.)
