All my life I've been registering scores like that, so that I always feel that I'm highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so, too. Actually, though, don't such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering a particular type of academic question - questions that are considered important by the people who make up the intelligence test - people who are intellectuals, just like me?

これまでの人生でずっとそんなふうに点数を取ってきた。だからいつも自分は知性があるのだと思っているし、ほかの人もそう考えてくれると思っている。だが実際、そんな点を取ったからと言って、わたしがある種の学術的な質問――知能テストを作っている人々――わたしのような（？）知性的な人――が重要だと思っている質問――にうまく答えられるとは限らないのだ。
