柄は螺鈿がほどこされています。
螺鈿は伝統工芸に用いられる装飾技法のひとつで、貝殻の真珠層の部分を切り出した板状の素材を、木地の表面にはめ込む手法です。

作られた時代は不明です。

There is a crest of a Katabami on the center of the handle. This is a Katabami sword, representing the Samurai warriors.
Katabami is oxalis in Japanese, and is often used in Japanese family crests.

The handle is decorated with Raden.
Raden is a traditional Japanese decorative technique, and is made by cutting out a plate-like nacre (aka mother of pearl) from the shell. This material is then inserted/fitted into a wooden base.
