改善（Kaizen）の一般的意味は、悪い状態を改めて善くすることであるが、製造業で用いられる用語としての改善は、工場の作業者が中心となって行うボトムアップ活動のことである。
作業者の知恵を生産設備に織り込むことで、同じ設備を使う他社に差をつける。
不足するものをすぐに買うのではなく、自分達で工夫・製作・改良することで、大型投資を抑制する。

Kaizen generally means to improve bad situations, but as a term used in manufacturing industry, kaizen refers to worker-centered bottom-up activities in the factory.
