A disturbing number of adolescent mothers have a
history of sexual or physical abuse. Rape can directly
cause pregnancy in young women, with pregnancy occurring
in 6% of reproductive age rape victims. Conversely,
21% of rape-related pregnancies occur in children ages 12
to 15.Sexual abuse can indirectly increase the risk of
adolescent pregnancy because young women who experience
sexual abuse may be more likely to initiate consensual
sexual intercourse at a young age. In one study, 74% of
sexually active girls under 14 and 60% of sexually active
girls under age 15 reported a history of involuntary sexual
activity.
