冬の寒さが厳しい北海道や東北地方ではストーブも利用され、その燃料は薪や石炭であった。

東日本ではもっぱら囲炉裏が、西日本では囲炉裏と竃の両方が使われていた。戦前におけるガスや石油などの非固体燃料の使用、よってコンロの広範な利用は、大都市を中心とした極めて限定された範囲に留まった。農家では効率の悪い旧来の竃が使われており、1910年代末頃から農村台所改良運動が始まったが、竃の本格的な改善は1950年代の生活改善普及事業を待つこととなった。もっとも東京では西洋竃も使われていた。
