Exchange 2013 offers both In-Place Hold and Litigation Hold features. In-Place Hold provides granular hold capability for select messages based upon query parameters, hold period, and the ability to place multiple holds. Litigation Hold only allows all items to be placed on hold indefinitely or until the hold is removed.
Following the upgrade to Exchange 2013, customers are advised to start using In-Place Hold functionality instead of Litigation Hold. Although Litigation Hold is still available in Exchange 2013, this feature is being deprecated. We recommend that you use In-Place Hold to place all items or items matching search criteria on hold.
