All the same, as I drove out of Nouakchott for my first ever Saharan expedition, I could not help noticing the quantities of plastic bags littering the desert, along with discarded tires and even rusty carcasses of cars.

After an hour's drive north, the acacias and scrubby bushes gave way to low beige sand dunes – the classic image I expected of the Sahara. Our 4x4 turned onto a track to the west and a few minutes later, we were speeding by the vast sapphire expanse of the Atlantic. Soon we stopped and pitched our tent, a spacious, hand-sewn traditional Mauritanian home, just where the dunes seemed to have halted their seaward advance.

Igualmente, mientras manejaba saliendo de Nouakchott por primera expedición al Sahara, no podía evitar notar la cantidad de bolsas plásticas como basura en el desierto, junto con neumáticos descartados e incluso carcazas oxidadas de autos.

Después de una hora manejando al norte, las acacias y los arbustos achaparrados dieron lugar a bajas dunas de arena color beige. Nuestra 4x4 entró a un camino hacia el oeste y unos minutos más tarde, estabamos acelerando por el vasto safiro que es la extensión del Atlántico. Pronto nos detuvimos y armamos nuestra carpa, una espacioso hogar Mauritano tradicional cosido a mano, justo donde las dunas parecían haber detenido el avance de la marea.
