As the cold bit and the wind rumbled ominously, I started to question what on earth we were doing. But climbing up Mount Yotei, an active volcano, in search of deep powder was never going to be easy.

Most skiers coming to Japan's northern island of Hokkaido head for the popular resort of Niseko to experience its pristine snow. But for those who want a non-standard experience, scaling one of Hokkaido's most iconic volcanoes is too big a temptation to resist.

四つんばいになって頂上に急ぎ、天に向かって叫びながら、このスキー経験は自分が思っていた以上のものでした。少し寒く、風が不気味に地響きを立てて吹くにつれ、自分たちが何をしているのか疑い始めました。しかし、活火山の羊蹄山に登り、深い雪を捜すことは決して簡単になことではありませんでした。

日本の北、北海道に来ている多くのスキーヤーは、その真っ白な雪を経験するために、人気のリゾート地ニセコに向かいます。しかし、人とは違う経験を望むものにとっては、北海道を代表する火山の一つに登ることは、抑えるにはあまりにも強すぎる誘惑だったのです。
