（前からの続き）今は夏の一番暑い盛りで（特に靴を履いていない兵士にとっては）足の裏がひりひり焼けたため、耐えられなかった。兵士らを悩ませた喉の渇きのために、ぐずぐずしている余裕はなかったが、敵の襲撃にはもはや耐えられる状態ではなく、防御する手段がないまま傷を受けた。出口を見つけた時、そこには壮健な兵士らが揃った敵軍が占領していた。彼らは信じられないような勇気でその一列に突進し、残る力を振り絞って敵を圧倒した。彼らは敵が占拠している次の一列を見つけた時、絶望してあきらめ、喉の渇きと厚さのためにバタバタと倒れた。Cornificiusは近くの泉の水を兵士らに掛けてやった。敵の別の一軍は泉を占有していた。
