The artist worked then on a field with no set boundaries and thought so little of the surface as a distinct ground that he often painted his animal figure over a previously painted image without erasing the latter, as if it were invisible to the viewer.

そのアーティストはそれから何の枠にも縛られていない分野で活動しました。絵の具をのせていく表面を他と切り離された地とはほとんど捉えてなかったので、他の絵が描いてあったところに動物の姿を描くときも、よく前の絵の上にそのまま描きました。あたかもこの絵を見る者に前に描いてあった絵が見えないかのような扱いです。
