Per dimostrare la propria visione di umanità come fondamentalmente corrotta, il tiranno, che non crede nell'amicizia, permette a Melos di andare a condizione che se non fosse ritornato entro un certo tempo, il suo amico sarebbe stato giustiziato. Quando Melos cerca di apparire alla cerimonia e di ritornare, insorgono molte difficoltà per Melos, ed è incerto se sarà in grado di ritornare prima che il suo amico venga giustiziato.
