Two additional categories were scored. If a participant elaborated some of the positive characteristics of her children(or children in general), she was given a 1. If she described her children(or children in general) in a negative way, she was given a -1. If she did both(or neither), she was given a 0. Thus, the following quotation was given a 1: "They've turned into great grown-ups whose opinions I respect." In contrast, a -1 was given for the following comment: "My kids acted out a bit."
Finally, responses were rated along a 5-point continuum that assessed overall positive affect. Thus, the following response, saturated with positive imagery, was given a 5: "I am blessed with two lovely adult children.
