Authoritarian indiviuals, in general, are norm followers and avoid seeking out information that might conflict with established beliefs. Extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism have not been consistently related to authoritarianism. In the current study, these patterns of correlates for authoritarianism should more or less hold up in later midlife due to the impressive rank order and mean levels of stability shown by the Big 5. Participants were part of a longitudinal study of well-educated women who graduated in 1964 from Smith College, a highly selective single-sex liberal arts institution.
