As an american "who knows nothing about Japan" (as a child) our only exposure to Anime was American TV cartoons that were "repackaged for American kids". Speed Racer, Starblazers - programs like that.
As I got older - I got into certain anime - that "real japanese" individuals may have found ... "too American" for thier taste ... Galaxy 999, Metanti Conan, Kaito Kid, Slayers, Lupin III, Zorrori, Hand Maid May, Pretear, Vamire Hunter D and others.

日本について何も知らないアメリカ人の子供として育っていた私たちにとって、アニメと言えば「アメリカの子供向けに修正された」TVアニメでした。マッハGoGoGoや宇宙戦艦ヤマトなどの番組です。
大きくなるにつれて、私はあるタイプのアニメに夢中になりました。「本物の日本人」は「アメリカンすぎる」好みだと思うかもしれませんが…銀河鉄道999、名探偵コナン、怪盗キッド、スレイヤーズ、ルパン三世、HAND MAIDメイ、新白雪姫伝説プリーティア、吸血鬼ハンターDなどです。
