「パラベン」とは化粧品用の防腐剤として使われる成分です。合成の防腐剤としては最も微量で安全性が高く、皮膚への刺激も少ないため、多くの化粧品に使用されてきましたが、800人に1人くらいの割合でアレルギー性があることが判明しています。アレルギー性ということで、かつては厚生省の指定成分にもなっていました。
パラベンフリーとは、その防腐剤のパラベンが含まれていないことを指します。今ではパラペンフリーをうたう化粧品も増えています。

Paraben is a component used as a preservative for cosmetics. It is very efficient with an extremely small amount with high safety and gives scarce irritation to skin, so it has been used for many cosmetics. However, one out of 800 persons suffers from allergy for it; therefore, it was once assigned as a designated substance by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Paraben-free means that a cosmetic does not have paraben. Now many cosmetic declare paraben-free.
